Download and Run TFC(Temp File Cleaner)

  • Please download TFC to your desktop,
  • Save any unsaved work. TFC will close all open application windows.
  • Double-click TFC.exe to run the program.
  • If prompted, click "Yes" to reboot.

Note: Save your work. TFC will automatically close any open programs, let it run uninterrupted. It shouldn't take longer take a couple of minutes, and may only take a few seconds. Only if needed will you be prompted to reboot.

Please again disable the programs that I asked you to disable when running ComboFix.

Run CFScript

Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the box into the window:

Code: Select all
Folder::
c:\documents and settings\all users\_qbothome
Registry::
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
"QuickTime Task"=-
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\security center]
"AntiVirusDisableNotify"=dword:00000000

Save it to your desktop as CFScript.txt

Referring to the picture below, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe
Image
This will let ComboFix run again.
Restart if you have to.
Save the produced logfile to your desktop.

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

Please post the ComboFix log and a new Hijackthis log.

Please note that I am quite suspicious of ZCBF.exe and somewhat suspicious of Desktop Component 0 as my tablet does not have such an entry (at least not using HJT 1.99). I actually don't recognize PRISMXL.SYS iaantmon.exe iaanotif.exe though it's possible they've been there all along - I don't look at hubby's running processes all that often, and I did not set his laptop to run HJT at every bootup as mine does. There are probably other things that I don't know how to notice, but I'm sure you do. :)

And I still don't know why two QTFont files were created *just* moments before the _qbothome folder was. Were they deleted?

Don't worry, those files that you asked me about are legitimate. Let's check for leftovers now...

Go to start > control panel > Display (Display properties) > Desktop > Customize Desktop... > Web tab
Uncheck and delete everything you find in there. (except for "My current home page")

Remove bad HijackThis entries
  • Run HijackThis
  • Click on the Scan button
  • Put a check beside all of the items listed below (if present):

    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {41D68ED8-4CFF-4115-88A6-6EBB8AF19000} - (no file)
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {CA6319C0-31B7-401E-A518-A07C3DB8F777} - (no file)
    O23 - Service: ZCBF - Unknown owner - C:\DOCUME~1\Owner\LOCALS~1\Temp\ZCBF.exe (file missing)
    O24 - Desktop Component 0: Ink Desktop - {80E95280-2D38-3CB8-A215-FB5F14C4343E}

  • Close all open windows and browsers/email, etc...
  • Click on the "Fix Checked" button
  • When completed, close the application.

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and save to your desktop.

  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to:

    Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

  • Then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform Full scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked Except for the objects located in C:\System Volume Information, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please copy and paste the log back into your next reply

    Note:
  • The log can also be found here:
    C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\mbam-log-date (time).txt
  • Or via the Logs tab when Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware is started.
  • If you ever want to buy Malwarebyte's Anti-Malware Pro, which has real-time protection, please buy it from this link. This site will get some payment, which will help with the server costs.

Please post this log on your next reply and a new Hijackthis log.

Notes - I had some difficulty getting MBAM to update using the program's update function, so I ran it first, then I used it's website link as I felt somewhat safer allowing the laptop to connect. On using the website link, it opened IE and I discovered that the failure to update was because IE was marked "Work Offline" - when that was unchecked, the MBAM update worked fine. I had also spent some time with Comodo Firewall, removing any permissions which looked "hinky" to me - they can always ask permission again. I also changed Comodo Firewall to ask permission by port and IP address and blocked everything until I could WhoIs them. I discovered that the permission for _qbot.dll was still in there, but had to be removed by using the APPLY button, which I had not realized before. Once I figured that out, all references to "qbot" within the registry were also gone.

MBAM after update:

Notes - You realize there is still a copy of _qbothome, etc., within the Qoobox - MBAM still doesn't see it. I strongly suspect the detections above are false positives as that is the Gateway Recovery Partition. I still need to know how to put back the autorun.inf and the desktop.ini that were deleted from that partition, unless you can assure me that they are not necessary for the Recovery function to work, should I need it. So... I told MBAM to make the log and closed it without doing anything about the detections - neither remove nor ignore.

As I was unimpressed with both AVG and MBAM, I then installed Avast! Antivirus, home edition. With a 10 May 09 database it failed to detect _qbot. When updated to the latest version, it found the files in the Qoobox, which I left alone. I still remain rather unimpressed, considering this has been around for over 2 years, now, though maybe I have a new and improved version. I have since uninstalled AVG which no longer offers free antivirus. I am considering paying for Avast! Pro to get the Script Blocker. If this site has an affiliate link for that program, please let me know. I am writing this from the hubby's laptop as I think I can keep an eye on things between Avast! and especially Comodo firewall now that I have found the by-port and by-IP settings. I don't know that I can yet trust it enough to give it back to the hubby, though. I would like to run a boot-time scan with Avast! now that it's updated, but being unsure what it might do with discovered nasties, I though I would wait for you. Also, Avast! did not detect anything in the D:\ Recovery Partition, though it did list about a thousand archives that it could not scan because they were password protected. It saved a log if you are interested.

Edited to add:

I also manually shift-deleted those QTFont files I didn't "like". I figure if I have lived without them until the moment of infection, I can do without them now. If they are actually necessary, then they can just reinstall from wherever-the-heck they came from. And if they are the "key", then Avast! Web Scanner ought to catch it, I hope.

After a little research of those files, they actually look malicious. Although they are in the backup folder, they may still be infected files.

I suggest that you re-run Malwarebyte's Anti Malware and remove them.

_qbot has already been removed, you do not need to worry about that anymore.

Run Kaspersky Online Scan

Please go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.

  1. Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  2. It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
  3. When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
  4. Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
      Archives
      Mail databases
  5. Click on My Computer under Scan.
  6. Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
  7. You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
  8. Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
  9. Please post this log in your next reply.

Please post the Kaspersky log and the Malwarebyte's Anti-Malware log.

I have been unable to get the Kaspersky Web Scan to work, so far. I have tried various settings and both Maxthon (IE engine) and IE browsers, though not Firefox yet. The page keeps reloading once per second, and doesn't display any system info or the accept button. It might be my firewall settings. I'll try some more, though I feel rather "naked" at connecting to the internet without my safety nets fully in place... Do you know if this Web Scan would be using any other process than the browser that I can add to the list of permitted processes? I didn't see any evidence of this when I went using my laptop, though. Is this a common problem you have any suggestions for?
