Re: Google Redirect

Eh, she acts sluggish, like I'm running a lot of programs even when I'm not, Internet load speeds and even going into system folders seems to take a bit. I thought maybe I needed new memory since it's a couple of years old but don't know if I can expand past the 1 gig RAM or not on my Dell. The Google redirect is still in place, though it is random and sometimes will let me click through to the page I was trying to reach, sometimes... I tried to find an article for my cat's frequent urination problem last night, and got an adult pissing porn site *Sigh*. I've picked up and deleted a few new Trojans and Bloodhounds through Norton that somehow got on here, it's not as frequent as when I first got the infection, but still more than average.

Also, side note, I had someone Private Message me on here about some utility that might fix it, but I didn't think it was typical protocol to offer help when an official was already helping and I am always sketchy about downloading new exe's from people I've never dealt with:

To remove the TDSS trojan, try this free utility:
(Link removed - Admin)

It was from a new member, so I thought it rather suspicious. I figured I'd run this past you to make sure nobody was trying to pull a fast one.

Thanx again for all the help so far!

Thanks for telling me about the PM you got, I've notified the Mods/Admins here at the site about it. Far as I'm aware it is against MWR policy for anyone except a trained malware remover to send any files over PMs. I would stay far away from the file.

Do these redirects happen in just IE or just Firefox? Or both?

To help speed up your computer, try following the tips at the website below:

http://www.malwareremoval.com/tutorials ... slowly.php

I'd also like for you to run the following scan for me:

Step # 1: Download and Run Gmer

Please download gmer.zip from Gmer and save it to your desktop.

***Please close any open programs ***

Double-click gmer.exe. The program will begin to run.

**Caution**
These types of scans can produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<--- ROOKIT" entries unless advised by a trained Security Analyst

If possible rootkit activity is found, you will be asked if you would like to perform a full scan.
  • Click No.
  • Once the scan is complete, you may receive another notice about rootkit activity.
  • Click OK.
  • GMER will produce a log. Click on the Save button, and save the log as gmer.txt somewhere you can easily find it, such as your desktop.
If you do not receive notice about possible rootkit activity remain on the Rootkit/Malware tab & make sure the 'Show All' button is unticked.
  • Click the Scan button and let the program do its work. GMER will produce a log.
  • Click on the Save button, and save the log as gmer.txt somewhere you can easily find it, such as your desktop.

DO NOT touch the PC at ALL for Whatever reason/s until it has 100% completed its scan, or attempted scan in case of some error etc !

Please post the results from the GMER scan in your reply.

Well, to be honest I pretty much only use Firefox so hadn't noticed. I did try IE a couple of times last night, but didn't see any immediate problems. The Firefox version doesn't seem to be happening as often though as of now, so I will keep checking on the IE browser to be sure.

As for the GMER scan, I wasn't sure of you meant to scan all the drives or not, I checked all the ones I have to be on the safe side. I have three Harddrives, as well as some partitioning.

Ok, as far as IE goes, the darn thing runs sluggish as Hell. I've been trying to do an online form for Blue Cross Blue Shield for the past hour and it just will not go through. Their rep says everything is fine on their end, that it has to be my system. I keep getting prompts saying I'm already running a session and it won't allow two at a time. Resetting the browser or the entire system makes no difference. And it's taken over half an hour just to get thorugh the 4-5 web pages to even get that prompt. Firefox runs a little faster but isn't able to access those pages since their were "Optimized" for IE. My Norton picked up another Spyware/Infection called A0118490. It's picked up at least 1 Trojan or Virus each time I scan which has been every other day for the past 2 weeks.

Thanks for being so detailed with the info you've given me. :)

For IE, I see that you are using a very old version of IE (6.0 SP2). Try upgrading IE to the latest version to see if that helps any.

I've picked up and deleted a few new Trojans and Bloodhounds through Norton that somehow got on here, it's not as frequent as when I first got the infection, but still more than average.

My Norton picked up another Spyware/Infection called A0118490. It's picked up at least 1 Trojan or Virus each time I scan which has been every other day for the past 2 weeks.

What path/file location does Norton give for the infections/spyware that it is picking up?

Step # 1: Download and Run GooredFix

Please download GooredFix from one of the locations below and save it to your Desktop
Download Mirror #1
Download Mirror #2
  • Double-click GooredFix.exe to run it.
  • Select 1. Find Goored (no fix) by typing 1 and pressing Enter.
  • A log will open, please post the contents of that log in your next reply (it can also be found on your desktop, called GooredLog.txt).
Note: Do not run Option #2 yet.

In your next post/reply, I need to see the following:

1. GooredFix Log
2. A fresh HiJackThis Log

What Norton found/is finding are infected System Restore points. They are harmless where they are. When we are about finished working on the computer, I'll show you how to remove the infected points and set a new, clean one.

I'd like for you to update MalwareBytes' Anti-Malware and run it again to see if it catches anything new.

Step # 1 Run Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware.
  • Before running a scan, click the Update tab, next click Check for Updates to download any updates, if available.
  • Next click the Scanner tab and select Perform Quick Scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location.
  • You can also access the log by doing the following:
  • Click on the Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware icon to launch the program.
  • Click on the Logs tab.
  • Click on the log at the bottom of those listed to highlight it.
  • Click Open.

Step # 2: Run GooredFix

Please double-click GooredFix.exe on your Desktop to run it.
  • Select "2. Fix Goored" by typing 2 and pressing Enter.
  • Make sure all instances of Firefox are closed at this point.
  • Type y at the prompt and press Enter again.
  • A log will open, please post the contents of that log in your next reply (it can also be found on your desktop, called GooredLog.txt).
Note: If you receive a message saying that GooredFix needs your system to be restarted, please close all applications and reboot your system. Please also allow any registry changes that may be prompted by any of your security programs.

If your computer doesn't reboot after you run GooredFix, be sure to reboot it.

In your next post/reply, I need to see the following:

1. MalwareBytes' Log
2. GooredFix Log
3. A fresh HiJackThis Log
4. After running Gooredfix (and rebooting your computer), do you still get redirects with Firefox?

Well, so far it seems to not be re-directing anymore. It was getting intermittent (Only random links misdirected in the past day or so), so if it's clear through the next couple of days we're looking good :) Is there a decent Firewall or some other form of extra protection you might recommend to avoid this in future..?

Good to hear about the re-directing stopping :)

I have a few firewalls (free ones) that I can recommend to you once we've finished with your computer.

How are things going with IE? I saw this ( C:\Documents and Settings\Jynxx\Desktop\IE7-WindowsXP-x86-enu.exe ) in your previous HiJackThis Log. Were you able to successfully install IE7? Any improvement over IE6?

Also, when you try to fix things with Spybot (like the ones you posted about earlier), what happens? Does it fix the items and they keep coming back? Or does it give you an error and say it can't fix them?

IE7 seems to work much better, I so rarely used IE that I barely noticed until I actually had to. I've been able to access those pages I needed for my health insurance finally, so definitely better than the old one...

As for Spybot, it seemed to find a new one or another, always said it fixed it, but what concerns me is this message that keeps popping up during the scans. It did so again today when I double checked it, and I've updated the program a couple of times to see if it would fix it. The Pop-Up reads:

Warning

There were problems in the include file C:\Program Files\Spybot-Search_Destroy\Includes\Malware.sbi See 'Include errors.log' for details.

I think this is the log in question:

Not too sure, but it sounds like it might be an internal problem with Spybot or its files. Try uninstalling and then reinstalling Spybot to see if that stops the popup from occuring.

I downloaded a newer version off of Cnet, it had some problems installing, kept saying it was having problems installing a few .dll's, but it offered to retry each time and did eventually install. The last scan found one Trojan which it said it fixed. No additional pop-up's during scan, so it appears to be a success there :)

Good to see that Spybot is working again. :)

Any other problems with your computer? Is Firefox still free of redirects or is it back to redirecting?

My apologies, I had a bunch of new hours assigned at work and haven't had much free time recently. The redirect problem seems licked, I haven't seen any new instances in the past week. The newer Spybot picks up seemingly random bits and nothing new on Norton at all. What would be your recommendations to avoid any future problems or to clean up anything remaining that might prove a risk?
