Received Notice of Spam from my network

Unread postby Silk » May 10th, 2009, 2:22 pm

Wife's Facebook account sent out messages with a link to a malware site. I checked her machine and found the koobface virus. Attempted to qurantine it using either AVG or Counterspy. Can't remember which. Subsequent AVG and counterspy scans found no additional problems. However, we are still experiencing problems on our network and her machine.

- Her PC shuts off/reboots at random times. It reboots every time I try to clear the IE or Java cache.
- Our network connectivity is slow and dropping in and out constantly. Both her and my machine. Started after Facebook incident.
- Direct connect to the modem with my PC and there are no connectivity issues.
- There is a router between the modem and our machines. I loaded the latest firmware. Same issues. Her machine connects through wireless.
- Received a browser redirect on my machine today from my ISP (RR). It was a message that a machine from this modem was sending out a large amount of spam.
- She informed me she had clicked "OK" to download something from a website recently from a link that she received from a friend.

Re: Received Notice of Spam from my network

Unread postby Dakeyras » May 15th, 2009, 9:19 pm

Please note that all instructions given are customised for this computer only, the tools used may cause damage if used on a computer with different infections.

If you think you have similar problems, please post a log in the HJT forum and wait for help.

Hi Silk and welcome to Malware Removal :)

I'm Dakeyras and I am going to try to assist you with your problem. Please take note of the below:

  • I will start working on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine!.
  • The process is not instant. Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine is clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • If you don't know, stop and ask! Don't keep going on.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
  • Refrain from running self fixes as this will hinder the malware removal process.
  • It may prove beneficial if you print of the following instructions or save them to notepad as I post them.
  • Your security programs may give warnings for some of the tools I will ask you to use. Be assured, any links I give are safe.

Our network connectivity is slow and dropping in and out constantly. Both her and my machine. Started after Facebook incident.
- Direct connect to the modem with my PC and there are no connectivity issues.
- There is a router between the modem and our machines. I loaded the latest firmware. Same issues. Her machine connects through wireless.
Can you tell myself please in your next reply, the make/modal of the Router in use. This I will need to know because most likely it is going to need a factory reset, enabling of the NAT Firewall if it has one and the applying of a password to protect the settings etc.

If you know how to do this with the Router, do so now if not just post back the specifications please and I will provide instructions.

Is you Wife's wireless connection secured do you know? If not it would be prudent to address that also at some point.

Now please do not be alarmed but there may a possibility your own machine is infected also, if you wish once we have cleaned your Wife's machine I am perfectly happy to check yours in this topic also, just let myself know OK.

Take your time with the below OK. Unfortunately due to the infections in-place we have to approach this head on with more instructions for a first post than normally I would not advise/ask for to be carried out.

Next:

I am still seeing traces of koobface and some other issuies we can address now. Plus it appears the Anti-Virus in use is a out of date installation but we can address that next OK.

Please re-open HiJackThis and select Scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below (if present):

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyServer = http=localhost:7171
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyOverride = *.local;<local>
R3 - URLSearchHook: Yahoo! Toolbar - {EF99BD32-C1FB-11D2-892F-0090271D4F88} - (no file)
O1 - Hosts: ::1 localhost
O1 - Hosts: ??????????????? browser-security.microsoft.com
O1 - Hosts: ??????????????? antiwareprotect.com
O1 - Hosts: ??????????????? hxxp://www.antiwareprotect.com
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AlcxMonitor] ALCXMNTR.EXE
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [KernelFaultCheck] %systemroot%\system32\dumprep 0 -k
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [DL32] DL32

Now click on Fix Checked. Close HiJackThis.

Next click Start >> Run and type cleanmgr in the box and press OK.

  • Ensure the boxes for Temporary Files, Temporary Internet Files and Recycle Bin are checked.
  • You can choose to check other boxes if you wish but they are not required.
  • Click on OK then Yes.
  • Now Reboot(restart) your computer.

Next:

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

  • Double click on mbam-setup.exe then follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please post that log in your next reply.
The log can also be found here:
  1. Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  2. Click on the Logs radio tab.

Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process, if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

Next:

Now lets carry out a more in-depth scan of your computer shall we as follows:

  • Please download Random's System Information Tool by random/random from here and save it to your desktop.
Make sure that RSIT.exe is on the your Desktop before running the application.
  • Double click on RSIT.exe to start RSIT.
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • Once it has finished, two logs will open:
    • log.txt will be opened maximized.
    • info.txt will be opened minimized.
  • Please post the contents of both log.txt and info.txt.

When completed the above, please post back the following in the order asked for:

  • How is your Wife's computer performing now, any other symptoms and or problems encountered?
  • Router spec's.
  • Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Log.
  • Both RSIT logs. <-- Post them individually please, IE: one Log per post/reply.

**Updated this morning**

I left the computer on last night and when my wife brought it out of standby and was downloading her email an AVG warning popped (she thinks it was a trojan warning, but did not write it down). This is all mail she previously opened on my computer using Road Runner's browser based email, so I don't think she re-downlaoded a new virus. She completed downloading the messages and left the computer. When she came back it had re-booted itself again.

The network appears to be working fine on my wife's computer and on mine (need to run for a bit to confirm it).

While running cleanmgr, computer rebooted in the middle of the process. This happened twice before I moved on.

Rouer is a Netgear wgr614v6. I used the reset button and reset the password. I do not know how to setup the NAT firewall or perform any other actions with the router. I do not believe she has a secure connection either.

Re: Received Notice of Spam from my network

Unread postby Dakeyras » May 16th, 2009, 11:57 am

Hi :)

While running cleanmgr, computer rebooted in the middle of the process. This happened twice before I moved on.
OK this may be indicative of that the Hard-Drive is in need of some maintenance/repair, we will check for this shortly. There are some some software conflicts also which go a long way to explaining why we have the KernelFaultCheck entry back and active. Plus I suspect some malware may camouflaging itself as a legitimate Microsoft process.

Rouer is a Netgear wgr614v6. I used the reset button and reset the password. I do not know how to setup the NAT firewall or perform any other actions with the router. I do not believe she has a secure connection either.
OK we will address this later, for future reference this is how you would login to your Router online if not aware:

  • Launch/Open Internet Explorer and enter the enter the below into the address field(or merely click on it here then depress both CTRL & D to add to favorites)

    http://www.routerlogin.net

  • When prompted enter your username and password to login.
  • The downloadible PDF format user manual for your Router is here
  • Note: There should be a copy also on the installation CD-ROM that came with your Router.

Next:

Please download just one only of the three free anti-virus applications installer listed below:

Custom Batch File:

  • Open Notepad.
  • Copy and Paste everything from the Code Box below into Notepad: <-- Start >> Run... type in notepad and select OK
Code: Select all
@Echo off
SC Stop SymWSC
SC Delete SymWSC
SC Stop vsmon
SC Delete vsmon
del %0
  • Go to File >> Save As
  • Save File name as "Dakeyras.bat" <-- Make sure to include the quotes.
  • Change Save as Type to All Files and save the file to your Desktop.
  • It should look like this: Image

Now double click on the desktop Dakeyras.bat to run the batch file. It will self-delete when completed.

Next:

Now I will be asking you to boot into Safe Mode for the next part of the fix. It may prove beneficial if you print of the following instructions or save them to notepad as you will not have Internet access whilst in the aforementioned safe mode.

How to boot into Safe Mode:

Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap the F8 key. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode, do so.

If any problems refer to this tutorial.

In safe mode carry out the following:

Some of the below are deemed optional removals either because they are not particularly effective and or are known system resource intensive. They will be highlighted in RED and at your own discretion to remove or not.

Now please go to Start >> Control Panel >> Add/Remove Programs and remove the following (if present):

Adobe Acrobat and Reader 8.1.2 Security Update 1
Adobe Reader 8.1.2 <-- Older Adobe installations pose a security risk, we will update this later.
AVG 7.5
iTunes
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 12
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_03
Java(TM) 6 Update 5

Java(TM) 6 Update 7 <-- All the older Java installations pose a security risk.
LiveUpdate 1.90
Norton WMI Update

PC-Doctor for Windows
QuickTime

Viewpoint Media Player

Note: Take extra care in answering questions posed by any Uninstaller. Some questions may be worded to deceive you into keeping the program.

Now please make sure you Internet Connection is deactivated and Reboot your computer back into Normal mode.

Next:

Now with which ever new Anti-Virus application installer you opted to download:

  • Install >> Activate your Internet connection >> Check for any new updates >> Carry Out a Complete Scan.
  • Have it fix anything it finds.

Next:

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2
Link 3

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your AntiVirus, AntiSpyware and Firewall applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools.
  • How To Temporarily Disable Your Anti-virus, Firewall And Anti-malware Programs can be read here
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Image

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Image

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Note: Do not forget to re-enable your Anti-Virus application after running the above scan!

A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may have caused your machine by running ComboFix on your own.
This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use. ComboFix SHOULD NOT be used unless requested by a forum helper

Check Hard Disk For Errors:

Press Start >> Run..(or depress the Windows key & R together) then copy/paste the following command into the box and press OK:
cmd /c chkdsk c: |find /v "percent" >> "%userprofile%\desktop\checkhd.txt"
A blank command window will open on your desktop, then close in a few minutes. This is normal.
A file icon named checkhd.txt should appear on your Desktop. Please post the contents of this file.

When completed the above, please post back the following in the order asked for:

  • How is your Wife's computer performing now? Any problems encountered and or further symptoms?
  • ComboFix Log.
  • checkhd.txt
  • A new HijackThis Log.

Just want to say thanks for your help so far. Here's where I am.

  • Read the router manual, but didn't want to change anything without checking here first.
  • Downloaded latest AVG version, but not installed yet.
  • Ran the batch file
  • Booted to safe mode. Was only able to remove the following programs: AVG 7.5, LiveUpdate 1.90, PC_Doctor for Windows, Viewpoint Media Player
  • Received the following pop-up with the programs I could not uninstall: "The Windows Installer service could not be accessed. This can occur if you are running in safe mode or if the Windows Installer is not correctly installed."
  • At this point I did not install AVG and did not run ComboFix since the uninstalls didn't work. I did check the hard drive for errors. The log is (duplicated) below:

The type of file system is NTFS
    Volume label is PRESARIO
    Warning! F parameter not specified.
    Running CHKDSK in read-only mode.
CHKDSK is verifying files (Stage 1 of 3)...

Correcting errors in the Master File Table's (MTF) BITMAP attributes.
Correcting errors in the volume BITMAP.
Windows found problems with the file system
Run CHKDSK with the /F (fix) option to correct these.

I am having trouble completing the AVG scan without a restart. It has detected two viruses, but has restarted before I could clean them. I also had family come into town and was unable to spend much time on it yesterday. It will be getting my full attention tomorrow night.

If I am unable to complete the AVG scan should I attempt to run ComboFix?

Hi.

Further research has revealed something. I have bad news I'm afraid :(

One or more of the identified infections is a severe Polymorphic File Infector

This allows hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and Download and Execute files.

I would counsel you to disconnect this PC from the Internet immediately. If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.

Unfortunately no attempt could be made to clean this machine, it could never be considered to be truly clean, secure, or trustworthy. We could not say definitively that unknown and unseen malware will have been removed, nor will your system be restored to its pre-infection state. We cannot remedy unknown changes the malware may likely have made in order to allow itself access, nor can we repair the damage it may possibly have caused to vital system files. Additionally, it is quite possible that changes made to the system by the malware may impact negatively on your computer during the removal process. In short, your system may never regain its former stability or its full functionality without a reformat. Therefore, your best and only course of action is a reformat and reinstallation of the Windows operating system, and that is the course we strongly recommend.

Please read these for more information:

Virut and other Other File Infectors

How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud?

When Should I Format, How Should I Reinstall

Next:

I suggest you to start backup all of your valuable data/documents/pictures/movies/songs/etc..
Do NOT backup any applications/installers and Do NOT backup any .exe/.scr/.htm/.html/.xml/.zip/.rar files...
This because these files may be infected as well. If you back them up and replace them afterwards, it will infect your computer again.

Should you have any questions, please feel free to ask.

Alrighty. Thanks. I've had the internet connection disabled on the infected machine for most of this process. I am working on reloading Windows on her PC. I hate to take up any more of your time, but you mentioned possibly checking my machine as well. At this point, if you are able, I think that would probably be a wise choice.

Hi :)

Below is some advice on what to install on your wife's computer. By all means I will certanly check your computer also. Just post a HijackThis Log in this topic and we will go from there

Reformat and Reinstallation Advice:

  • Use an Anti Virus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future. Only use one Anti-Virus application, otherwise a system conflict will occur and this actually lessens online protection.
Here are some free Anti Virus programs which i recommend to use:
    • Antivir PersonalEditionClassic
      • Free anti-virus software for Windows.
      • Detects and removes more than 50,000 viruses. Free support.
    • avast! 4 Home Edition
        • Anti-Virus program for Windows.
        • The home edition is freeware for noncommercial users.
    • Update your Anti Virus Software - It is imperative that you update your Anti virus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your anti virus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.
    • Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly. Only use one Firewall application, otherwise a system conflict will occur and this actually lessens online protection.
Here are some free Firewalls which i recommend to use:
(Use only one, and disable your Windows Firewall)
  • Keep your system updated-Microsoft releases patches for Windows and other products regularly:
  • Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
    • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
    • Click once on the Security tab
    • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
    • Click once on the Custom Level button.
      • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
      • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
      • Change the Initialise and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
      • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
      • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
      • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
      • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
      • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
    • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
  • Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware - Download it from here
The tutorial on how to use MBAM is located here
  • Install WinPatrol - Download it from here
You can find information about how WinPatrol works here
  • Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.
    Download it from here
The tutorial on how to use Spyware Blaster is located here
  • Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.

Follow this list and the potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically. Any questions regarding the avove feel free to ask OK!

Re: Received Notice of Spam from my network

Unread postby Dakeyras » May 21st, 2009, 4:22 pm

Hi :)

Thanks. I have reloaded her machine and will implement all the suggestions in your last post.
You're welcome!

Punkbuster warning:

I see you have Punkbuster installed. This is spyware. Punkbuster can take control over various aspects of your computer, and some gaming tools not unlike Punkbuster also hinder their removals. By the definition we handle here, Punkbuster is actual spyware. Therefore, I now ask you to decide the following:
  • Either we try to leave Punkbuster alone but there is no guarantee a spyware component doesn't 'accidentally' get taken out; so Punkbuster might break. This will, of course, also break your ability to play games using Punkbuster enabled servers.
  • Or we can just remove Punkbuster. You can reinstall it afterwards if you wish, but please keep in mind that it is spyware.
  • Another option is to not clean this computer at all. This ensures Punkbuster will continue to function.

Please let me know what you would like to do in your next post.

Advised Optional Removals:

This is at your own discretion but I do highly advise you remove the following, they will be highlighted in red. The rest will require removing.

Now please go to Start >> Control Panel >> Add/Remove Programs and remove the following (if present):

Ad-Aware
PunkBuster
ZoneAlarm Spy Blocker

Note: Take extra care in answering questions posed by any Uninstaller. Some questions may be worded to deceive you into keeping the program.

Please re-open HiJackThis and select Scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below (if present):

O2 - BHO: Google Toolbar Notifier BHO - {AF69DE43-7D58-4638-B6FA-CE66B5AD205D} - C:\Program Files\Google\GoogleToolbarNotifier\3.0.1225.9868\swg.dll
O2 - BHO: ZoneAlarm Spy Blocker BHO - {F0D4B231-DA4B-4daf-81E4-DFEE4931A4AA} - C:\Program Files\ZoneAlarmSB\bar\1.bin\SPYBLOCK.DLL
O3 - Toolbar: ZoneAlarm Spy Blocker - {F0D4B239-DA4B-4daf-81E4-DFEE4931A4AA} - C:\Program Files\ZoneAlarmSB\bar\1.bin\SPYBLOCK.DLL

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Alcmtr] ALCMTR.EXE

Now click on Fix Checked. Close HiJackThis. Now Reboot(restart) your computer.

Next:

We need to carry out a more indepth research of your system as follows:

  • Please download Random's System Information Tool by random/random from here and save it to your desktop.
Make sure that RSIT.exe is on the your Desktop before running the application!
  • Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.

  • How is your computer performing now, any symptoms and or problems encountered?
  • Decision about Punkbuster.
  • Both RSIT logs. <-- Post them individually please, IE: one Log per post/reply.
