HiJackThis log - Please review - System slows down it's own

Unread postby PJinNY » May 12th, 2009, 9:02 am

My laptop slows down seriously from time to time, and it hangs at times forcing me to turn off the power because no keys work (not even "ctl-alt delete"). It's a Dell Inspiron 9400 with 2 GB ram funning on Windows XP pro. It has plenty of power. I use Kaspersky's AV and Zone Alarm Pro.

The HiJack log is below. I would appreciate any advice you may give.

Thanks,

Paul

Hello! :hello2: and welcome to the Malware Removal forums.
I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems. HijackThis logs can take a while to research so please be patient while I work on your log and I will post back here with any recommendations.

  • I will be working on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine.
  • Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • It's often worth reading through these instructions and printing them for ease of reference.
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to say or ask!! It's better to be sure and safe than sorry.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.

I don't see anything particularly nasty, you do seem to have a lot of programs allowed to run at startup, this may be contributing to your speed issues. Have a look at this topic and see if it helps: http://www.malwareremoval.com/tutorials ... slowly.php

If it doesn't then please do the following:

Step 1:
Run Eset NOD32 Online AntiVirus
http://www.eset.eu/online-scanner
Note: You will need to use Internet Explorer for this scan.
  • Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use.
  • Click Start
  • When asked, allow the activex control to install
  • Disable your current Antivirus software. You can usually do this with its Notfication Tray icon near the clock.
  • Click Start
  • Make sure that the option "Remove found threats" is Un-checked, and the option "Scan unwanted applications" is checked
  • Click Scan
  • Wait for the scan to finish
  • Re-enable your Anvirisus software.
  • A logfile is created and located at C:\Program Files\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt. Please include this on your post.

Step 2:
Download at your desktop DDS from one of the links below:

Link 1
Link 2
  • Double click the tool to run it.
  • A black Screen will open, just read the contents and do nothing.
  • When the tool finish it will open 2 reports.
  • Copy/paste both reports back here along with the ESET results.

Thank you for your help. It's comforting to know that nothing obvious appeared as a problem. I'll follow your advice about trying to cut down on the number of programs that autolaunch, and study the other topics as well.

Thank you for asking. No, I don't need more help. I followed the advice given and downloaded a program I can use to cut down on the number of programs that launch (WinPatrol) but haven't yet figured out which ones to stop. Some of it is gobbledigook because I'm frst learning the nomenclature. I don't know if this board has some sort of way of thanking people for help and saying that I consider the topic closed. If so, I missed it. In any event, I want to thank you again for the help I received.

Winpatrol is an excellent program, I use it myself. There is a subforum here dedicated to it: viewforum.php?f=86 so if you need to ask any questions regarding it, you are welcome to ask there.

If you're unsure what to remove this site: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/startups/ has some good information on startup programs, it also has some good support forums if you are still unsure.

Best of luck in the future and surf safe. :)
