Virus removal

Hi, I have had major problems removing a virus from a friends computer. I have wiped his hard drive with killdisk Pro three times but the virus re appears when he starts to use the machine at home. Could it be a motherboard virus?, I am told the motherboards do not get viruses? O could it possibly be hiding in hie router? I suspect the router because when i reinstall at my place I normally have the machine for a few days to install all the updates and programmes. When I am running the machine there is no evidence of the virus even after many shutdowns. But as soon as he gets it home and plugs it in to his router the virus re installs immediately. Can anyone give me some advice on this problem???
Cheers
