I am turtledove, and will be assisting you with your log.
If you still need assistance, please do the following:

*Print all instructions or Copy to Notepad for reference.
*Please note, unless I'm notified ahead of time, this topic will close without a response in 5 Days.
*Place a link to this thread in your Favorites/Bookmarks for easily returning here.
*Please respond until I give the all clear, as absence of symptoms does NOT always mean Clean.
*If you can do the above all should go well.

**As I am an Undergrad, my responses will be approved before I post to you; therefore it may take a tad bit more time to reply.
Thanks for your patience.

Since it has been some time since your above post, please post the following logs. I will go over the new logs and return as soon as possible.

Step 1
Please make an Uninstall list :
To access the Uninstall Manager, please do the following:

1. Start HijackThis
2. Click on the Config button
3. Click on the Misc Tools button
4. Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.
5. Click on the Save list... button and specify where you would like to save this file. When you press Save button a notepad will open with the contents of that file.
Simply copy and paste the contents of that notepad here on your next reply.

Step 2
Rerun HijackThis and Save the log.

Post the HijackTis and the Uninstall list using the Reply button.

Thank you

Hi! Thanks for the reply! I actually got a little impatient (because I thought no one would answer) so I figured a System restore might help. Right now, my comp is working fine, but if it's okay with you, can you just double check for me? So I don't know if that changes any of your recommended steps, but here's what you asked for:

Hello selene0018,

Step 1
You have 3 Anti Virus programs running/installed.
Avast 4
Norton Internet Security and also Norton Anti Virus 2005.
Running more than 1 will cause instability, slow system and conflict with each other.

Please Uninstall the following by going to: Start--> Control Panel--> Add/Remove Programs:
Adobe 7 - This version will be updated below
Avast 4
Internet Explorer Default Page - An adware/spyware program
j2re1.4.2_03 - This will be updated below as it is vulnerable to attacks.
Norton Anti Virus 5

Any other outdated or unused programs you'd like to uninstall.
Exit the Add/Remove and control panel windows.

*Reboot your computer

Step 2
Sun's Java is often updated in order to eliminate the exploitation of vulnerabilities in an existing version. For this reason, it's extremely important that you keep the program up to date, and also remove the older more vulnerable versions from your system. The most current version of Sun Java is: Java Runtime Environment Version 6 Update 13.
  • Go here to Update Java
  • Click on the link named Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 13
  • Click on the radio button to Accept License Agreement
  • Click on Windows Offline Installation, Multi-language and save the downloaded file to your hard disk
  • Delete the folder C:\Program Files\Java if present
  • Install the new version by running the newly-downloaded file, and follow the on-screen instructions.
  • Reboot your computer

Step 3
Install Adobe Acrobat Reader 9
http://get.adobe.com/reader/otherversions/
Select XP SP 3 version, Select Adobe Reader 9.1 and download.

**please reboot your computer**

Step 4
Install and use RSIT

  • Download random's system information tool (RSIT) by random/random from here and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • Once it has finished, two logs will open. Please post the contents of both log.txt (<< will be maximized) and info.txt (<< will be minimized)

In Reply Post:
log.txt
info.txt

Thank you

Hm, my norton internet security program keeps saying it's expired (which was why I have the avast now). Is it safe to just leave the avast the way it is while I uninstall Norton Internet Security and Norton Anti Virus 2005?

Oh, and what exactly is "Internet Explorer Default Page"? I can't seem to find it in the add/remove program list. Is it under something different?

ack, sorry for the late reply.

Hello selene :)

Thanks for the reply.

**Please copy these instructions for reference.
You may want to be off line and temporarily disable Avast while uninstalling Norton's products. Re-enable after Norton is gone.**

  • Launch Avast Anti-Virus
  • Click Menu > Settings > Troubleshooting
  • Check Disable Avast self defense module then click OK
  • Exit out of Avast Anti-Virus.

For Norton:

Remove Norton

Note : You should first attempt to remove your Norton product using Add/Remove Programs in the Windows Control Panel (Programs and Features, in Windows Vista). This is the best method. After uninstalling using Windows Add/Remove Programs, run the Norton Removal Tool to ensure successful removal of all Norton references.

Please go to this -page- and select the product you have

1 Download the Norton Removal Tool.
Save the file to the Windows desktop.
2 On the Windows desktop, double-click the Norton Removal Tool icon.
      3 Follow the on-screen instructions.
Your computer may be restarted more than once, and you may be asked to repeat some steps after the computer restarts.

Internet Explorer Default Page-->> If not listed any longer don't worry.

Please follow my previous post instructions to Download and run and RSIT .

Please post the RSIT reports and any other issues you still may have.

Thank you

Hello selene0018,

Thanks for your logs.

First Step
REMOVE P2P PROGRAMS

IMPORTANT I notice there are signs of one or more P2P (Person to Person) File Sharing Programs on your computer.

BitTorrent

Please read the Guidelines for P2P Programs where we explain why it's not a good idea to have them.

Note: Even if you are using a "safe" P2P program, it is only the program that is safe. You will be sharing files from uncertified sources, and these are often infected. The bad guys use P2P file sharing as a major conduit to spread their wares.

Go to Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and uninstall the programs listed above (in red) NOW.
Also Remove Internet Explorer Default -->> That is still in your Installed Programs List

**Please Do Not download ANY New programs while we are cleaning, except the tools I need you to use.
Post back
A new HijackThis Uninstall log as you did after my initial post, so we can continue cleaning your pc.
What problems you still have, any new issues?
Thank You
TD

Hi,

I removed the P2P program, sorry! i didn't read that forum topic!

Anyway, is there any way that I can remove the Internet explorer default page manually? Because I seriously don't see it in the add/remove programs list....

And I haven't had any new problems or anything. I did install a Japanese font support for adobe, but I figured that was probably okay....

Hello selene,

Please Print/Copy these instructions for easy reference.
First Step
ATF (Atribune Temp File) Cleaner© by Atribune
**For IE
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
Exit the program.

**If you use Firefox browser

Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.

**If you use Opera browser

Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.

Click Exit to close ATF-Cleaner.

Second Step
Open Internet Explorer:
Go into Internet Explorer's Tools Tab/Internet Options, click on the general tab and type in the new home page you would like.
Example: http://www.google.com
You may also select use Blank if you prefer, or Select Default.

Third Step

Please open Mawarebytes program. On the Menu, Select Update Tab. Let it update. It may restart itself.
Please Choose Full Scan from the Scan tab. be sure to leave all the drives selected.
Back at the main Scanner screen, click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to restart your computer. (see Note below)
The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.

***Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

Fourth Step

Please go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.
  • Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  • It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
  • When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
  • Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
    • Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
    • Archives
    • Mail databases
  • Click on My Computer under Scan and then put the kettle on!
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
  • You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
  • Save this report to a convenient place like your Desktop. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
  • Copy and paste the report into your next reply along with a fresh HJT log and a description of how your PC is behaving.

Please Post MBAM log

New problems:
None again. I haven't really been on any fishy/suspicious websites, but I got a couple of warnings about viruses when I was on a pretty legit site and it said that was the source? (I think I was on youtube or the website for my college) The thing popped up two or three times with the same warning before it stopped. So I don't know if that's anything.

About the warnings messages:

I didn't know if it was something to worry about because it's not doing that anymore. And it was from avast. I did what it suggested (quarantined and deleted, I think).

Anyway, thank you for your time and patience ^_^

Hello selene0018,

Second Step
Important are the following updates to aide in keeping your system secure:

If this was not done earlier from my previous post:

http://get.adobe.com/reader/otherversions/

Visit Microsoft Updates: Get the Critical/Important Security updates including Internet Explorer 7 or 8
XP Updates
