So, I got hit with spyware a few weeks ago. I am running Windows XP with all updates and service packs installed, and using Internet Explorer 7. This particular bout of spyware/malware/whatever caused search boxes and pop-up ads to appear unrequested on my machine. I tried killing the stuff with HiJack this myself, but it looks like I have the fsmgmt.dll file, which replicates itself even after you've apparently eliminated it. I eventually did a System Restore, and that appeared to kill the most obvious symptoms: no longer did I get the unrequested search boxes or advertisements. However, some of the more insidious problems remain, inlcuding:

1) When I go to MacAfee security for a free scan, it tells me I need to update my browser because I am using something before Internet Explorer 5.0 - even though I am using 7.0.
2)Adaware 6.0 cannot contact its server to update itself.
3) Whenever my computer starts up from a power down, curiously, my external sound card's drivers are not properly booted. I actually have to disable the device in device manager and then enable it again to get any sound after a cold start.
4) Computer freezes have become far more frequent.

I did finally mange to get AVG successfully on to this machine, but it has the same trouble HiJack This had for me: it identifies fsmgmt.dll and "fixes" it (as does Windows Defender, which, by the way, I was only able to download AFTER I had done a System Restore - after I got the malware/virus but before I tried System Restore, my computer was prevented from downloading Windows Defender), but the file is right back the next time the computer restarts.

I had been hit with spyware once before, about four years ago, but thought I had killed it. Nevertheless, it appears there may be some legacy effects of that stuff on my machine.

they install, launch and run invisibly, without the consent or knowledge of the user. Once installed, Backdoor Trojans can be instructed to send, receive, execute and delete files, harvest confidential data from the computer,
log activity on the computer and give your attacker opportunity to have a "look round" your computer. During that time he/she can have made any number of modifications to your system,
some of which may be in areas we don't usually scan, and we can not say what damage has been done to your system files, that are causing problems now or in the furture


Your PC is compromised and there is no way to be sure your computer can ever again be trusted, Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of Trojan,
the best course of action would be a reformat and reinstall of the OS, Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but DO NOT use this machine for any banking or other financial transactions, if you have been,
Go to a clean computer, change ALL your online passwords -- for ISP login, email, banks, financial accounts, PayPal, eBay, online companies, and any online forums or groups you belong to.

Doing a reformat and reinstall, would be the safest way to clean your system, and would guarantee that all the infection is gone, trying to clean it would take probably twice as long
and There is NO GUARANTEE it will be clean.

Do forget to backup all your Data, Contacts, Address Books, Email Accounts, note down any passwords you may need, and make sure you have
all the installation media and key codes for your windows and software, before you copy anything back to your fresh install scan it
with Antivirus and AntiMalware programs.

Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently once you have your Antivirus Installed. -
It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly.
This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer.
If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.


Install Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware - Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware is a new and powerful anti-malware tool. It is

Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc.
Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer



Winpatrol <= Download and install the free version of Winpatrol. a tutorial for this product is located here:
