Hi Bob :)

Disinfect USB Drive:

Note: This means your thumb drive OK.

Please download Flash_Disinfector and save it to the desktop.

  • Double click on Flash_Disinfector click to run it.
  • You will be prompted to plug in your flash/usb drive. Plug it in.
  • Flash_Disinfector will start disinfecting your flash and hard drives. This takes a few seconds. Your desktop will disappear in the meantime.
  • When done, a message box will appear. Click OK. Your desktop should now appear. If it doesn't, press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
  • Click on File > New Task (Run...). Type in explorer.exe and press Enter. Your desktop should now appear.

Hard-Drive Maintenance/Repair:

Note: for the CHKDSK portion you may refer to this tutorial of mine here and follow the instructions for Graphical Mode if you so wish.

  • Click Start >> Run... then type in CMD and click on OK.
  • At the Command Prompt C:\ > type the following:
  • CD C:\ and hit the Enter/Return key.
  • Now type in DEFRAG C: -F
  • A Analysis report will be displayed and then Windows will start the Defragmention run automatically.
  • This may take some time, when completed the Command Promtp C:\ > will appear.
  • Now type in CHKDSK C: /R and hit the Enter/Return key.
  • When prompted with:
CHKDSK cannot run because the volumne is in use by another process
Would you like to schedule this volume to be checked next time the system
restarts (Y/N)
  • Hit the Y key then at the Command Prompt C:\ >
  • Type in EXIT and and hit the Enter/Return key.
  • Now Reboot(Restart) your computer.

Note: Upon Reboot(Restart) the CHKDSK(check-disk) will start and carry out the repairs required.

You should see a screen like this just after the Post(power on self test) screen:

Image

Note: Do not touch either the keyboard or Mouse, otherwise the Check-Disk will be canceled and you computer will continue to boot-up as normal.

When completed the above, please post back the following in the order asked for:

  • How is you computer performing now, any problems encountered and or symptoms ?
  • A new HijackThis Log.

Hi Dakeyras -

I posted my last response without refreshing the page. Your help is most welcome!

Today I was once getting AT&T error pages when opening some google search results (something that was happening a couple of days ago but had stopped) and also the same AT&T error when clicking on a bookmark on my startup page for "my yahoo" and so I shut my computer off. Also, my online Juno account had froze.

When I started back up, Juno still froze up, and I am still getting AT&T error pages. Also, once again an error message said the system had recovered from a serious error.
The error signature:
BCCode : 100000d1 BCP1 : C2EE6800 BCP2 : 00000005 BCP3 : 00000001
BCP4 : F7AB3737 OSVer : 5_1_2600 SP : 2_0 Product : 768_1

Something I didn't think to mention earlier is that my system for months has not accepted two (it used to be three but since I've been working with Wi[k]! one of the updates has installed) MS updates. I even had an MS tech link to my computer and look around and try some things months ago but no solution was found. The two security updates that will not install are MS XML Core Services 6.0 Service Pack 2 (KB954459) and Windows XP (KB946648). Other MS updates over the past couple of months have downloaded and installed.

Here's the type of AT&T error page I am getting:
http://www.att.net/s/s.dll?spage=search/error.htm&pcclient=1&hbsearch=1&source=APYEPAPRTLAPPS&string=http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&ct=res&cd=1&url=http%3A%2F%2Fmy.yahoo.com%2F&ei=Lxf-SdTrBYvWlQe45JyWCw&usg=AFQjCNFBa9yM_gwQg5WctR2t_wcvqf8-CQ

Thank you,
Bob

Not a problem and you are very welcome!

I even had an MS tech link to my computer and look around and try some things months ago but no solution was found.
Not a wise move actually as those so called IT Techs and I use the term loosely are not the most adept and or correctly trained for the most part but you have done nothing wrong OK as you were merely seeking assistance for the problem(s)

OK carry out what I advised/asked for here prior, then post back what I asked for and we can go from there so I more able to ascertain your computer is in a more stable state and if required we can use other avenues of investigation.

Hi -

I followed your latest instructions and my computer and browsers (IE and Firefox) seem to be working okay except for the two MS security updates which I try to download and that my computer indicates have downloaded and are installing when I shut the computer down. The updates that do not install are MS XML Core Services 6.0 Service Pack 2 (KB954459) and Windows XP (KB946648). I notice the second one is for Windows Messenger which I do not use so maybe that's why that one does not install?

Thanks,
Bob

Hi :)

Thanks for the situation update

Remove Symantec Remnants:

Please click here and follow the instructions to download and run the norton removal tool for the installation that you have had installed in the past.

If not sure which to use, download and run this safe generic tool from here.

Next:

Hi Dakeyras -

Things seem to be getting better! :)
My computer seems to working okay.
I’m not getting Troj/Rustok notices and when I google search there are no btmon.car results.
A MS automatic update that had disappeared for some time joined the two previously mentioned updates (XML Core Services 6.0 Service Pack 2 and Security Update KB946648) that will not install. The third update is Windows XP Service Pack 3 (KB936929). My computer will attempt to install this (as in months past) but the procedure fails and then it uninstalls.

Your instructions to delete certain Hijack This items included this fragment:
k/?linkid=39204

It is the last part of this line which I did not delete:
O16 - DPF: {17492023-C23A-453E-A040-C7C580BBF700} (Windows Genuine Advantage Validation Tool) - http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=39204

Did you want me to delete this?

Thanks,
Bob

Hi :)

Hi Dakeyras -

Things seem to be getting better! :)
My computer seems to working okay.
Good to know

A MS automatic update that had disappeared for some time joined the two previously mentioned updates (XML Core Services 6.0 Service Pack 2 and Security Update KB946648) that will not install. The third update is Windows XP Service Pack 3 (KB936929). My computer will attempt to install this (as in months past) but the procedure fails and then it uninstalls.
OK here is the situation as I am primarily Anti-Malware support this is not usually within my sphere of assistance. However since it is most likely the malware infections in the first place that have caused these errors I am prepared for the time being to see if we can rectify this. Normally in these situations if it cannot be rectified a repair of the Operating System is sometimes the only course of action, then all relevant Service Packs and Critical Updates would require to be re-installed. However if I am unable to repair the fault I will actually refer your good self to a reputable IT Support forum I am a member of myself so the IT Techs can both advice/assist OK.

Plus as a rule it is never wise to actually install any updates during the course of a malware removal process. In this instance we are fine because as far as I can tell your computer is malware free.

Strange though Automatic Updates is attempting to download/install SP3, this is most likely though because Windows/Automatic updates is corrupted.

Note: We still have some tasks to carry out that involve a specific methodology to remove the specialist tools that have been used during the course of a malware removal procees. We will carry out this next time OK.

I apoligise that actually pertains to this HJT Entry:

O16 - DPF: {01012101-5E80-11D8-9E86-0007E96C65AE} (SupportSoft Script Runner Class) - http://www.symantec.com/techsupp/asa/ct ... nkid=39204
Bad editing on my behalf and you have removed the entry anyway.

System File Check:

  • Click on Start >> Run...
  • Type in SFC /Scannow <--- Make sure to leave a space between SFC and the forward slash.
  • Click on OK
  • System File Checker will now scan all protected files to verify their versions.

Note: This will take some time. Also you may be prompted to place your XP installation CD-ROM in the CD-Drive if required.

Dial-a-Fix:

Download and unzip Dial-a-Fix to its own folder on your desktop.

  • Open the Dial-a-Fix folder, launch the program by clicking on the blue cog-wheel icon.
  • Image
  • First, click the "Policies..." button on the bottom.
  • If anything is found, make sure it's checked and then, click the "Remove" button and click the "Close" button to close that window.
  • Now click the green, double check icon (Check all) on the bottom.
  • Then click on 'GO' at the bottom.
  • Click "Exit" and restart your pc when Dial-a-Fix has done.

When completed the above, please post back the following:

  • How is you computer performing now, any other symptoms and or problems encountered?
  • A new HiJackThis Log.

Hi Dakeyras -

I started SFC /Scannow and it asked for XP installation disc with Service Pack 3 and doesn't accept my Dell operating system Reinstallation CD with Windows XP including Service Pack 1. Scannow gives the option of skipping this step.

Thanks for all your help!

Hi :)

OK not a problem. It should not be asking for that as your system is only at SP2. I think downloading and installing SP3 should rectify any other operating system problems.

I will provide instructions on how to do this both safely and correctly in my all clear post OK

Just carry on with my instructions from Dial A Fix on-wards and we will proceed from there.

Hello Dakeyras -

Hi -

While running the repair in Dial-a-fix I got an error message:
An error occurred during registration of the file: C:\WINDOWS\system32\wuapi.dll (version 7.2.6001.788). The next dialog will contain an error code and possible suggestions.
Error 0x8007005: 'Access denied'. It is suggested that you run "Repair permissions" which is found in the Tools dialog. Windows XP Home users will need secedit.exe to perform the repair - http://DjLizard.net/software/secedit-sfx.exe

Should I follow these procedures?
Thanks,
Bob

Hi Bob :)

You took the correct course of action asking myself about this. I think it best not to at all and we will try something else. Just delete Dial a Fix please.

There is a far safer tool we can use, then just post a new HiJackThis log/situation update for myself to give a final check.

As I mentioned in a prior post I will then provide instructions for SP3 etc.

Next:

  • Please download SeDebug-Restore to your desktop.
  • Next double click to run the small application.

Hi Dakeyras -

When I click on SeDebug-Restore.exe to run the program I get this error message in a SeDebug-Restore window:
'\script.exe' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file.
Please reboot your machine
Press any key to exit

Hi :)

OK Reboot(restart) your computer and try again. If still no success proceed to the below otherwise just post a fresh HijackThis Log.

Next:

Note: Only carry out the below if SeDebug-Restore failed again OK.

  • Please download Random's System Information Tool by random/random from here and save it to your desktop.
Make sure that RSIT.exe is on the your Desktop before running the application.
  • Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • Once it has finished, two logs will open:
    • log.txt will be opened maximized.
    • info.txt will be opened minimized.
  • Please post the contents of both log.txt and info.txt.

When completed the above, please post back the following in the order asked for:

  • How is you computer performing now, any other symptoms?
  • Both RSIT logs. <-- Post them individually please.

Hi Dakeyras - :profileright:

My computer seems to be operating okay.

SeDebug-Restore failed again after a reboot so here are the Random (run with 1 month setting) files requested.

Thanks,
Bob

Hi :)

My computer seems to be operating okay.
I have to say this does surprise myself somewhat, due to what I have discovered/was suspecting.

The situation is not unredeemable at all and I highly advise you stick with this. It may take another fare few days to resolve but we will get there eventually OK

Hard-Drive Advice:

At present the available free space is at a exceedingly dangerous level of reduced capacity free space wise:
System drive C: has 2 GB (2%) free of 114 GB
This is far below the considered safe level of 15% free space, myself I actually both think/prefer around the 25% mark is a safer option in my humble opinion.

Here is the situation Bob, we really need to free up some Hard-Drive space asap before addressing the other problems I have identified caused by the once present malware infections and remnants remaining that require addressing.

I highly advice you uninstall any software applications either not used/or required. A good example would be any of the Dell related installations(these are for the most unnecessary and can be accessed from the Dell Resource CD-ROM).

Also delete/move any files/pictures to a removable storage media that do not have to remain on the the Hard-Drive.

After completing my above advice, we can then begin to address the other issues I have identified OK.

Next:

Please make sure that RSIT.exe is still on the Desktop.(if not inform myself straight away please)

  • Double click once on RSIT.exe
  • RSIT will start running, at the disclaimer click on Continue.
  • When done, 1 log will be produced.
  • Post that in your next reply.

When completed the above, please post back the following:

  • How is you computer performing now, any other symptoms and or problems encountered?
  • A new RSIT Log.
