I was trying to download a game from bigfishgames.com and couldn't. So I decided to check for a virus using clamwin. This led me to research the infected file(s) and here I am. Thanks for the help!

My name is Ken, on these forums I am known as ktreffin. I will be helping you with your current problem. I know that you need your computer working as quickly as possible, and I will work hard to help see that it happens.

I am sorry that there has been such a delay in getting to your log.

If you still need assistance, please do the following:

Step #1: Please post a new Hijack This Log

• Launch Hijackthis.
• Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
• Copy/Paste the log to your next reply please.

Don't use the Analyse This button, its findings are dangerous if misinterpreted.
Don't have Hijackthis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

Step #2: Please make an Uninstall List using HiJackThis.

To access the Uninstall Manager you would do the following:

1. Start HijackThis
2. Click on the Config button
3. Click on the Misc Tools button
4. Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.
5. Click on the Save list... button and specify where you would like to save this file. When you press Save button a notepad will open with the contents of that file. Simply copy and paste the contents of that notepad here in a reply.

If you have been able to get the problem resolved, please let me know so I can have this topic closed.

• Some of the instructions I will provide may get quite long. I highly recommend that you print a copy of them off or copy them into Notepad.

• Please keep in mind that the instructions I give are specific to your current problem and should not be used on other systems.
  
• Also, please remember that there may be multiple issues with your system, please continue to follow this thread until I have given you an "All Clean!"

Are you using Symantec or Norton for an Anti-Virus? I see Symantec Live-update in your log along with several other Anti-Virsu programs (McAfee, AVG, ClamWin), however there is no sign of any of the Anti-Virus program actually running. Please let me know what the status of your Anti-Virus is.

I see that Viewpoint is installed. Viewpoint, Viewpoint Manager, Viewpoint Media Player are Viewpoint components which are installed as a side effect of installing other software, most notably AOL and AOL Instant Messenger (AIM). Viewpoint Manager is responsible for managing and updating Viewpoint Media Player's components. You can disable this using the Viewpoint Manager Control Panel found in the Windows Control Panel menu. By selecting Disable auto-updating for the Viewpoint Manager -- the player will no longer attempt to check for updates. Anything that is installed without your consent is suspect. Read what Viewpoint says and make your own decision.

To provide a satisfying consumer experience and to operate effectively, the Viewpoint Media Player periodically sends information to servers at Viewpoint. Each installation of the Viewpoint Media Player is identifiable to Viewpoint via a Customer Unique Identifier (CUID), an alphanumeric identifier embedded in the Viewpoint Media Player. The Viewpoint Media Player randomly generates the CUID during installation and uses it to indicate a unique installation of the product. A CUID is never connected to a user's name, email address, or other personal contact information. CUIDs are used for the sole purpose of filtering redundant information. Each of these information exchanges occurs anonymously.

Viewpoint Manager is considered as foistware instead of malware since it is installed without user's approval but doesn't spy or do anything "bad". This may change, read Viewpoint to Plunge Into Adware.
I recommend that you remove the Viewpoint products; however, decide for yourself. To uninstall the the Viewpoint components :

1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
2. In Control Panel, double-click Add or Remove Programs.
3. In Add or Remove Programs, highlight Viewpoint Manager, Viewpoint Media Player, Viewpoint Toolbar , click Remove.
   
   How to prevent it from being recreated every time you run the AOL software:
   • Open AOL
   • Go to Help on the toolbar
   • Select About AOL
   • Hit Ctrl D and a secret panel can be accessed which will allow you to disable all desktop and IM features associated with Viewpoint.

Step #1: Move HijackThis

Your copy of HijackThis needs to be in a folder of it's own. When HJT fixes anything, it makes backups of the original files in the folder it is in. For this reason it cannot be run from the desktop. Having the backups could be VITAL to restoring your system if something went wrong in the FIX process!

• Please go to your 'My Documents' folder, right-click and select 'New > Folder' then name the folder 'HJT'.
• Copy and paste HijackThis.exe to the new folder.
• Right click on HijackThis.exe and select send to > desktop
• This will make a new shortcut on your desktop.

DO NOT follow the steps below until you have moved HijackThis.

Please remove the following programs from your computer by completeing the following steps:

• Please click Start > Control Panel > Add / Remove Programs
• Please remove the following programs:

• Do not panic if some programs listed are not present.
• Once you have completed removing the above prgrams, you may exit the Control Panel

Please start HiJackThis as you did to generate a log, but this time click on "Do A System Scan Only".
Place a checkmark in the boxes to the left of the following entries by clicking on them:

Once complete, please exit HiJackThis.

Step #4: Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Scan

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

• Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
• At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to:
  
  • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
• Then click Finish.
• If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
• Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan.
• When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
• Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
• When completed, a log will open in Notepad. please copy and paste the log into your next reply.
• If you accidently close it, the log file is saved here and will be named like this: C:\Documents and Settings\<your username>\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\mbam-log-date (time).txt

Thanks for your help, Ken. I was not able to uninstall gamevance because I couldn't find it anywhere. I did find the link in favorites and just deleted that.

I'm using clamwin for virus protection at this time.

Before we go any farther, it still appears that you are running HijackThis from the Desktop. It is very important that we move this. Please do the following and post a new log when you are done.

MOVE HIJACKTHIS

Your copy of HijackThis needs to be in a folder of it's own. When HJT fixes anything, it makes backups of the original files in the folder it is in. For this reason it cannot be run from the desktop. Having the backups could be VITAL to restoring your system if something went wrong in the FIX process!

• Please go to your 'My Documents' folder, right-click and select 'New > Folder' then name the folder 'HJT'.
• Copy and paste HijackThis.exe to the new folder.
• Right click on HijackThis.exe and select send to > desktop
• This will make a new shortcut on your desktop.

If you have any problems with this, please let me know.

Step #1: Find a File Path

Press Start->Run, copy/paste the following command into the box and press OK:

A file called look.txt should appear on your Desktop. Please post the contents of this file.

Step #2: Run ESET Online Scan

Please do an online scan with ESET Online Scanner. Please use Internet Explorer as it uses ActiveX.

• Check (tick) this box: YES, I accept the Terms of Use.
• Click on the Start button next to it.

• You will be asked to install an ActiveX. Click Install.
• Once installed, the scanner will be initialized.

Step #3: Update Java

You are using an old version of Java. Sun's Java is sometimes updated in order to eliminate the exploitation of vulnerabilities in an existing version. For this reason it's extremely important that you keep the program up to date and also remove the older more vulnerable versions from your system. The most current version of Sun Java is: Java Runtime Environment Version 6 Update 13.

• Go to HERE
• Click on the link named Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 13
• Click on the radio button to Accept License Agreement
• Click on Windows Offline Installation Multi-language and save the downloaded file to your hard disk
• Go to Start => Control Panel => Add or Remove Programs
• Uninstall all old versions of Java (Java 2 Runtime Environment JRE or JSE)
• Reboot your computer
• Delete the folder C:\Program Files\Java if present
• Install the new version by running the newly-downloaded file and follow the on-screen instructions.
• Reboot your computer

Hi Ken,

When I checked for the contents of the look.txt file all I got was a blank/black screen. Nothing there.

I downloaded the current version of Java but I cannot delete the folder C:\Program Files\Java. Here's the error message I get:

"Cannot delete jp2ssv.dll: Access denied.

Make sure the disk is not full or write-protected and that the file is not currently in use."

That's OK about the Java folder, as long as you updated to the latest version we should be good. If you haven't already you can uninstall all of the old versions of Java:

• Java(TM) 6 Update 2
• Java(TM) 6 Update 3
• Java(TM) 6 Update 5
• Java(TM) 6 Update 7

The ESET scan found nothing which is good.

I do want to make sure that file in fact is gone. Let's have you take a look manually, as long as you can't find it, then I will feel more comfortable.

Step #1: Search and Delete Files

We need to do a search now.

• Click Start.
• Click Search.
• Click All files and folders.
• Expand More advanced optionsand then check Search system folders, Search hidden files and folders and Search Subfolders.
• Paste this into the All or part of the file name box:
  
  C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\awvvs.dll

If any of these files are found please let me know. DO NOT delete them until I give you the OK.

In your next reply, please post a new HijackThis log, and whether or not you were able to find that specific file.

Please start HiJackThis as you did to generate a log, but this time click on "Do A System Scan Only".
Place a checkmark in the boxes to the left of the following entries by clicking on them:

CLOSE ALL OPEN WINDOWS AND BROWSERS - EXCEPT HIJACKTHIS and click on "Fix Checked".
