Malware infection, DNS servers hacked?

Unread postby mark15 » April 9th, 2009, 11:59 pm

I am having a problem when trying to access some of my password protected websites like ebay, paypal, and even my bank's website.

I go to log on and after I put in my username and password, or actually any password or username, I get redirected to a phishing website that mimics the original. Then the page asks me for personal information like my SSN to validate my account. The address bar has the correct address in it but the IP address doesn't match it.

Norton found and tried to delete 3 system files and 1 DAT file in my Windows Temp Directory. Since Norton couldn't erase the files I went into the files and opened them with notepad, they had several of my passwords and usernames in clear sight. I rebooted my system in safe mode and successfully deleted the files but once I logged back in normanly the files were back and once again keeping track of any password and username I used for any site.

I did a google search and found someone else with the same problem but no solution. A Vundo Virus or Malware is given as a possible cause. The other infected person says that the DNS servers may have been hacked and are redirecting me or that something has interfeared with my hosts file. I don't understand what any of that means. :?

Since this problem started, Windows has crashed unexpectedly a few times as well.

I've already tried to fix the problem by running full scans with Norton, Ad Aware, and Malwarebytes but none of them found the problem.

Thanks in advance for any help you can give me.

Hello mark15 and welcome to the forums :)

I am turtledove, and will be assisting you with your log.
If you still need assistance, please do the following:

*Print all instructions or Copy to Notepad for reference.
*Please note, unless I'm notified ahead of time, this topic will close if there is not a response in 5 Days
.
*Place a link to this thread in your Favorites/Bookmarks for easily returning here.
*Please respond until I give the all clear, as absence of symptoms does NOT always mean Clean.
*If you can do the above all should go well.
*Please do not run any other tools/scans unless requested*

**As I am an Undergrad, my responses will be approved by an Expert/Teacher before I post to you; therefore it may take a tad bit more time to reply.
Thanks for your patience.

Since it has been some time since your above post, please post the following logs. I will go over the new logs and return as soon as possible.

Step 1
Please make an Uninstall list :
To access the Uninstall Manager, please do the following:

1. Start HijackThis
2. Click on the Config button
3. Click on the Misc Tools button
4. Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.
5. Click on the Save list... button and specify where you would like to save this file. When you press Save button a notepad will open with the contents of that file.
Simply copy and paste the contents of that notepad here on your next reply.

Step 2
Rerun HijackThis and Save the log.

Post the HijackThis and the Uninstall list using the Reply button.

Thank you

Hello mark15,

*Do so for all Users on the system. Once cleared, CHANGE passwords for users logging into this system.

If you have the names of the files Norton found could you post that please; check the quarantine folder. Also any files found in Malwarebytes Scan recently, as well as list any programs Files items you do not recognize.

Turtledove,

First thanks again!

I haven't had any other help with the system. OTListIt2 was recommended by a "friend of a friend" so I downloaded it thinking it was some kind of scanner I could use myself but I didn't realize, and still don't know, what it is. :? The only reason I kept it and didn't delete it was I though if I did find help, I could use it then.

The files that Norton tried to fix and couldn't were in my Windows Temp folder. I don't remember ever seeing them before but it is possible they were there before my problem started.
Here are their addresses:
C:\WINDOWS\Temp\Perflib_Perfdata_824.dat
C:\WINDOWS\Temp\rg4sfay a system file
This is the file that has my password information in it. When I open it with Notepad it clearly shows my web history and what passwords I used on each site. I did go into safe mode and delete it manually but if I log back onto the internet, this file along with the others in windows temp show up again just without the info it contained before I erased it in safe mode.

C:\WINDOWS\Temp\ydf8dk a system file

These next two items can't be deleted because according to windows they are already running.

C:\Documents and Settings\mark\Local Settings\temp\~DFC1DC.tmp

C:\Documents and Settings\mark\Local Settings\temp\etilqs_wAq6HfJjiCODi39bos7b

I forgot to mention that this only happens when I use Internet Explorer. When I use Firefox to surf the internet, I can access my accounts (ebay, Paypal, bank) fine without being redirected. The rg4sfay system file though still lists my passwords even in Firefox so I'm not certain if that's a normal windows file or not. I just started to use Firefox since the problems started since the problem appears to be IE related.

My internet connection is usually very fast, I have Comcast as my ISP, but it's been unusually slow ever since my problems started.

I also had a few blue screen warnings from Windows in the last week where I had to reboot the system.

Here is the Malwarebytes log from last week that found a few problems when I ran a quick scan. I ran a full scan immediately after the quick scan and it found nothing else. I ran a full scan today again and it found nothing.

Here is the log that did find a few problems:

Re: Malware infection, DNS servers hacked?

Unread postby turtledove » April 19th, 2009, 3:59 pm

Hello mark,

I am researching your information. Thanks for the log.
I see Combofix has been used on you system, do you have the log file it produced? Located here -->> C:\ComboFix.txt
Do you have a file named ComboFix-quarantined-files.txt, in C:\Qoobox ?

**Also note that Combofix is a powerful tool, and is not for use without proper guidance. If used incorrectly, you could end up with an un-bootable machine.**

Please post the above logs you have.

Thank you,

TD

Re: Malware infection, DNS servers hacked?

Unread postby turtledove » April 24th, 2009, 11:16 am

Hello marc15,

As you saw you did get a rootkit. This is a Very Dangerous infection.

One of the identified infections is related to a rootkit component.

You are infected by MBR (Master Boot Record) Rootkit

Rootkits are very dangerous because they use advanced techniques (backdoors) as a means of accessing a computer system that bypasses security mechanisms and steal sensitive information which they send back to the hacker. Many rootkits can hook into the Windows 32-bit kernel, and patch several APIs to hide new registry keys and files they install. Remote attackers use backdoor Trojans and rootkits as part of an exploit to gain unauthorized access to a computer and take control of it without your knowledge.

Since your computer was used for online banking, has credit card information or other sensitive data, you should immediately disconnect from the Internet until your system is cleaned. All passwords should be changed immediately to include those used for banking, email, eBay, paypal and online forums. You should consider them to be compromised. They should be changed by using a different computer and not the infected one. If not, an attacker may get the new passwords and transaction information. Banking and credit card institutions should be notified of the possible security breach. Because your computer was compromised please read How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud?

Although the rootkit has been identified and may be removed, your PC has likely been compromised and there is no way to be sure the computer can ever be trusted again. It is dangerous and incorrect to assume that because the rootkit has been removed the computer is now secure. Further, in some instances an infection may have caused so much damage to your system that it cannot be completely cleaned or repaired. The malware may leave so many remnants behind that security tools cannot find them. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of malware, the best course of action is to wipe the drive clean, reformat and reinstall the OS. Please read:

"When should I re-format? How should I reinstall?"
"Help: I Got Hacked. Now What Do I Do?"
"Where to draw the line? When to recommend a format and reinstall?"

The best option is to reformat this pc. You will need to backup important data before hand as described in When should I reformat link above.

Please let me know if you choose to reformat, or if you need continue to try to clean your PC. This PC will not be guaranteed safe.

Thank you,

TD.

TD,

I guess I'll be reformating the PC. :(

Could you provide me with any links / info on how to do this correctly?

I'm not very computer savy and didn't quite understand all of the info in the links you provided.

Thanks.

Hello mark15,

You will need an XP CD or Recovery discs that came with your computer to reformat.
Let me know please. If you have either of the above, follow the instructions below.

**Copy important documents and pictures to CD/DVD Before you begin.**

REFORMAT & REINSTALL

Since you decided to do a clean install read some information below.

Please make sure that you know what to do before beginning the operation.

Here are a few links that should help.
You should Print all the instructions/information from the sites, so you have them handy.

Reformatting Windows XP by wng_z3r0

Windows XP Clean install

Then there are a couple of things you should do immediately after installing Windows and before surfing the net...
  • Note: The Free Anti Virus and Firewalls are Free for Personal Non Commercial use only

  • Use an Anti Virus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.
Here are some free Anti Virus programs which i recommend to use:
    • Update your Anti Virus Software - It is imperative that you update your Anti virus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your anti virus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.
    • Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.
Here are some free Firewalls which i recommend to use:
(Use only one, and disable your Windows Firewall)
    • Security Updates for Windows, Internet Explorer & Microsoft Office
Whenever a security problem in its software is found, Microsoft will usually create a patch so that after the patch is installed, attackers can't use the vulnerability to install malicious software on your PC. Keeping up with these patches will help to prevent malicious software being installed on your PC. Ensure you are registered for Windows updates via Start > right-click on My Computer > Properties > Automatic Updates tab or visit the Microsoft Update site on a regular basis.
NOTE: The update process uses ActiveX, so you will need to use internet explorer for it and allow the ActiveX control to install.
  • Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option.
This will provide real-time spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an anti virus software.
Download it from here. Just choose a mirror and off you go.
Find here the tutorial on how to use Spybot properly here
  • Install WinPatrol
    Download it from here
Here you can find information about how WinPatrol works here
  • Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.
    Download it from here
Find here the tutorial on how to use Spyware Blaster here
  • Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will be reduced dramatically.

Let me know if you have an XP CD or Recovery disks, and if you have any questions.
