Hi mindloop,
-----------------------------------------------------------
YOU HAVE NO ANTI-VIRUS PROGRAM AT THE MOMENT
Download just one of these free anti-virus programs and run a full scan. Have it fix anything it finds.
Consider this an Emergency until you complete it!-----------------------------------------------------------
Remove log items with HighjackThis. Start HijackThis.
Click Do System Scan Only. When the Scan is complete, Check the following entries:
(Some of these lines may be missing)
O2 - BHO: Adobe PDF Reader Link Helper - {06849E9F-C8D7-4D59-B87D-784B7D6BE0B3} - C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 7.0\ActiveX\AcroIEHelper.dll
O4 - Global Startup: Adobe Reader Speed Launch.lnk = C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 7.0\Reader\reader_sl.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [updateMgr] "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 7.0\Reader\AdobeUpdateManager.exe" AcRdB7_0_9 -reboot 1
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [PC Pitstop Optimize Reminder] C:\Program Files\PCPitstop\Optimize2\Reminder.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [FolderShare] "C:\Program Files\FolderShare\FolderShare.exe" /background
O4 - Global Startup: Acrobat Assistant.lnk = C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 5.0\Distillr\AcroTray.exe
O9 - Extra button: PartyPoker.com - {B7FE5D70-9AA2-40F1-9C6B-12A255F085E1} - C:\Program Files\PartyGaming\PartyPoker\RunApp.exe
O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: PartyPoker.com - {B7FE5D70-9AA2-40F1-9C6B-12A255F085E1} - C:\Program Files\PartyGaming\PartyPoker\RunApp.exe

Make sure Every other window except HJT is closed (No other tabs showing in the bottom tray), and Click Fix Checked
Click the "X" in the upper right corner of the HiJackThis window to close it.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Remove Programs Using Control Panel
From Start, Settings, Control Panel or Start, Control Panel, click Add/Remove Programs.
Highlight each Entry, as follows, one by one, if it exists, and choose Remove :
Party Gaming
Party Poker
Adobe Acrobat 7 Reader
PCPitStop
FolderShare

-----------------------------------------------------------
REBOOT Your Machine
-----------------------------------------------
Run the RSIT Scanner
Please download the Scanner http://images.malwareremoval.com/random/RSIT.exe and save it to your desktop. The icon will be named RSIT.exe
Doubleclick the RSIT icon.
When the scan is complete, two text files will open
log.txt <- this one will be maximized
info.txt <- this one will be minimized
( Default location for both files is C:\rsit\ )
Copy/Paste the contents of both log.txt and info.txt into your next post please. Use two posts if you prefer.

Let me know how it goes.

mindloop,
We don't fix PCs with Peer-to-Peer file sharing programs installed. This is a primary source of infections.
Limewire has to go.
Both Java and Adobe have vulnerabilities in earlier versions that have to be removed.
You can keep the any older full version Adobe Acrobat, but we will download a newer version of the free Reader to open .pdf files on the net.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Remove Programs Using Control Panel(XP)
From Start, Settings, Control Panel or Start, Control Panel, click Add/Remove Programs.
Highlight each Entry, as follows, one by one, if it exists, and choose Remove :

LimeWire PRO 4.16.1
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 10
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 11
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 9
Java(TM) 6 Update 11
Java(TM) 6 Update 2
Java(TM) 6 Update 3
Java(TM) 6 Update 5
Java(TM) 6 Update 7
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment 6 Update 1
Adobe Reader 7.0.5
Adobe Reader 7.0.5 Language Support
Adobe Reader 7.0.9

Take extra care in answering questions posed by any Uninstaller. Some questions may be worded to deceive you into Keeping the program.
------------------------------------------------------------
Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment(JRE), and install it to your computer.
It is the 5th one on the page, called Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 13
Select Windows, multi-language, and check to agree to the license.
Download it, choose save, and save it to your desktop.
Then doubleclick it, and it will install the newest version of Java for you to use.
--------------------------------------------------------
Install a New Adobe or Foxit Reader
  • Go here and click on AdbeRdr910_en_US.exe to download the latest version of Adobe Acrobat Reader.
  • Save this file to your desktop and run it to install the latest version of Adobe Reader.

If you prefer a simple reader, without plug-ins, that is smaller and faster, take a look at the free Foxit Reader here : http://www.foxitsoftware.com/downloads/
I would recommend the older Foxit version 2.3 only, without the toolbar. Foxit version 3.0 has the undesirable ASK toolbar.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Run MalwareBytes' Anti-Malware
Please download the Installer and save to your desktop.
  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to both Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • If necessary, start Malwarebytes Anti-Malware again.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform Quick Scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location, and post the contents in your reply.
  • The log can also be found here if you need it : Start, All Programs, Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, Logs
The logs are named by date stamp

I was able to do all the steps you directed except for the final one of downloading:

Run MalwareBytes' Anti-Malware
Please download the Installer and save to your desktop.

With firefox, IE, and google chrome, it wouldn't allow me to browse to that page.

Next steps?

Thanks.

I downloaded it from CNET and installed it. But when it goes to update the software it fails.

I ran the non-updated quick scan, and here is the log:

mindloop,
For this infection, flash drives can become infected and transfer the infection to other machines.
--------------------------------------------------
Download Combofix from any of the links below. You must rename it before saving it. Save it to your desktop.

Link 1
Link 2
Link 3

Next:
  • DISABLE AVIRA ANTIVIR
Please navigate to the system tray on the bottom right hand corner and look for an open white umbrella on red background (looks like this:Image )
    • Right click it-> untick the option AntiVir Guard enable.
    • You should now see a closed, white umbrella on a red background (looks like this: Image )
The AntiVir Guard is now disabled.

Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts. Do not click on anything until Combofix finishes.
When finished, it will produce a log for you. Please include the contents of the log, located at C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Log is below.
I was able to finally install mcafee.
But there are some funky things going on. most importantly, I can't see my itunes library anymore on the network (my macbook, my roommate's computer, etc). I can't for the life of me find a toggle in McAfee that disables this blockage, would you be able to assist me with that? I googled it, but to no avail.

Should I uninstall Avira now that I have McAfee back?

Thanks so much for your help, greatly appreciated.

I am researching your log.
You can unnstall Avira, IF your McAfee is already paid for. Otherwise, the paid version of Avira is a bit better value.
If your McAfee is not paid for up to date I would uninstall it instead.

Be back soon.

Unfortunately it's already paid for. Had I know there were better options I would have gone that route...
Will uninstall Avira now.
Thanks.

You will need to go into McAfee, (rightclick the icon in the system tray?) and make sure the AntiVirus guard and Firewall are enabled.
You should be able to open Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, click the Update tab, and update it now.
If you can, do so and then have it run a full scan. (takes longer).
Please post the log from it.

mindloop,
You have had a very serious infection called Trojan.tdss or W32.Tidserv.
Since it has backdoor functionality, you will never be able to be 100% certain that the security of the machine has not been compromised.
If the machine has been used for any finances, you should consider taking appropriate steps in case any accounts or passwords have been intercepted.
You can be fairly sure that this infection came from the use of filesharing (Limewire, etc.) or downloading "free" videos.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Download ATF Cleaner by Atribune © from here : http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=1
It is a stand-alone program that does not need to be "installed". Save it to a convenient location and make a shortcut on your desktop.
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe or your shortcut to run the program.
Under Main, choose Select All
Click Empty Selected

If you use Firefox,
Click Firefox in the top bar, and choose Select All
Click on Empty Selected
NOTE: If you would like to keep any saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.

If you use Opera,
Click Opera in the top bar, and choose Select All
Click on Empty Selected
NOTE: If you would like to keep any saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
When it tells you how much has been removed, click Exit from the Main window.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Press Start->Run, copy/paste the following command into the box and press OK:
cmd /c dir C:\*.* /L /A /B /S|Find "msqpdx" >> "%userprofile%\desktop\look.txt"

A blank command window will open on your desktop, then close in a minute or two. This is normal.
A file called look.txt should appear on your Desktop. Please post the contents of this file.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Please download the Registry Search Tool from here (scroll down-there are also other tools on the page):
http://www.billsway.com/vbspage/
Unzip it to a convenient location such as your Desktop.
Make sure that your Antivirus / OS allows the use of the .vbs scripts. If prompted, make sure to allow the script.
Double click regsearch.vbs
Copy / Paste the following line into the Search Box:

85.255.11

then hit Ok
It may take a while to run.
It will tell you when it's done and offer to have you look at the file.
Say Yes, and when it opens copy/paste the content in your reply. Save the file to your desktop if it's convenient.

It didn't find that string, and look.txt is blank (?)...

mindloop,
That's a good thing, actually.
Your machine appears to be clear of malware. If you still find that a program or two does not behave correctly, it is likely due to damage from corrupted settings made by the infection. (Now that the infection has been removed, there may be an application or two that will need to be re-installed).

Please proceed as follows to improve your security going forward:
Print out this post for reference if you wish.
Refrain from using any Peer-to-Peer file sharing applications in the future, or you may turn your computer into an expensive doorstop.
Since the infection you had can also be transmitted via flash drives, we will use flash disinfector as a precaution first.
--------------------------------------------------
Run Flash Disinfector
  • Please download Flash_Disinfector and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click to run it.
  • You will be prompted to plug any and all flash drives. Plug it/them in.
  • Flash_Disinfector will start disinfecting your flash and hard drives. This takes a few seconds. Your desktop will disappear in the meantime.
  • When done, a message box will appear. Click OK. Your desktop should now appear. If it doesn't, press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
  • Click on File > New Task > Run... Type in explorer.exe and press Enter. Your desktop should now appear.
Wait until it has finished scanning and then exit the program.

You can run Flash Disinfector with other flash drives and/or other removable drives. This may include your mobile phone.
Please do so and allow the utility to clean up those drives as well.
-----------------------------------------------------------
  • Click START then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the Combofix and the /u
    • Image
  • When shown the disclaimer, Select "2"
The above procedure will :
  • Delete the following:
    • ComboFix and its associated files and folders.
    • Reset the clock settings.
    • Hide file extensions, if required.
    • Hide System/Hidden files, if required.
    • Set a new, clean Restore Point.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Install WinPatrol - Download and Install the Free WinPatrol, and view Instructions here: http://www.winpatrol.com/winpatrol.html
- WinPatrol is an active program that drops a "Scotty Dog" icon into the system tray (right click to check/change status), allows you to monitor/edit startups, services, Browser helpers, and prompts for permission if any program tries to change your system.
