Gotta figure I'm infected

Unread postby raccoongrrl » March 31st, 2009, 4:38 pm

Dell Laptop. XP Operating System. McAffee protection had expired. Symptoms of problems include:

Problems I encountered but seemed to have resolved include:

- Almost consistent crashing of IE (although I was able to download install LavaSoft Ad-Ware virus scanner that removed a bunch of cookies and seems to have resolved this particular issue)

- Search Sites would show links to either sales oriented or virus scan sites instead of topics I searched for. Again, deletion of cookies seems to have resolved this)

Problems I cannot seem to eliminate:

- When I click on a Search Engine link... it redirects to some other site. Browser back button usually returns me to the site I was trying to link to

- Unable to open CMD (nothing happens)

- Unable to open Regedit (again nothing happens)
- Unable to connect to some sites altogether. For example if I type in to connect to http://www.mcaffee.com the browser icon spins as if trying to connect but never brings up the site or any error message

- I tried downloading/installing AVG but it could never successfully update to the site.

Would appreciate any insight.

Due to a lack of response, this topic is now closed.

If you still require help, please open a new thread in the Infected? Virus, malware, adware, ransomware, oh my! forum, include a fresh FRST log, and wait for a new helper.
