Malware infection

Hello,

It appears as though I have gotten infected with malware today. I'm getting tons of popups in both firefox and IE. Only thing I remember of note was I clicked on a link my sister sent me (I thought) to this url: hxxp://sendspace-us.com?0.9604228. On that site received a message that said: "This account has been suspended. Either the domain has been overused, or the reseller ran out of resources." I then replied to my sister telling her of the error message. She replied that she did not send the email. It was from her email address and was to myself and several others of our family members and others in her address book. She assures me she didn't send it. Thank you in advance for your kindness and help.

Some examples of url's i'm getting popups include:

Adaware did not find it or help with the popups.

Make a uninstall list using HijackThis
To access the Uninstall Manager you would do the following:

1. Start HijackThis
2. Click on the Config button
3. Click on the Misc Tools button
4. Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.


Click on the Save list... button and specify where you would like to save this file.

When you press Save button a notepad will open with the contents of that file.
Simply copy and paste the contents of that notepad here on your next reply.

Run CCleaner that you already have installed

Open CCleaner by double clicking the desktop icon.

• Click the "Run Cleaner" button.
• A pop up box will appear advising this process will permanently delete files from your system.
• Click "OK"
• CCleaner will scan and clean your system.
• When cleaning is complete:
• Click "Exit".
• Repeat for all usernames.

1. Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and save it to a convenient location.
2. Double click on mbam-setup.exe to install it.
3. Before clicking the Finish button, make sure that these 2 boxes are checked (ticked):
   Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
   Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
4. Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware will now check for updates. If your firewall prompts, please allow it. If you can't update it, select the Update tab. Under Update Mirror, select one of the websites and click on Check for Updates.
5. Select the Scanner tab. Click on Perform full scan, then click on Scan.
6. Leave the default options as it is and click on Start Scan.
7. When done, you will be prompted. Click OK, then click on Show Results.
8. Checked (ticked) all items and click on Remove Selected.
9. After it has removed the items, Notepad will open. Please post this log in your next reply. You can also find the log in the Logs tab. The bottom most log is the latest.

If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove,you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts,click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.



Download and run Combofix

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:
A word of warning: Please do not run ComboFix on your own. it tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.

• Very Important!, before running Combofix Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan.

• Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
• As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
• Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.



Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:



Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you.

Also, I should add that between my last post and the one I just posted, I did uninstall some unused software and disabled some items in msconfig that I didn't want starting up.

Ok I can understand why you have stopped startups with msconfig, but untill we have finished cleaning can you
please go back into msconfig and allow all start ups to run, there are better ways to manage startups, and if you
like I can provide links for some good safe programs to manage the startups for you.

Please click on start, then run, and type msconfig and then press enter. When the window opens, click on the startup tab and make sure there are check marks in every entry.
Then press ok until you are out of the program.

Ok. I know ccleaner has a startup manager in it. If there is an ap you'd recommend I use in the future over that, please let me know. I used utorrent VERY infrequently and never to download executibles but only authorized sound recordings from live concerts (mp3, shn or flac format plus a txt file with the setlist). I have uninstalled it nevertheless.

Hi DFW,

I did not read your comment carefully enough about not installing the startup control panel you recommended and did install it. Oops. This time Combofix warned that AVG AnitVirus was running. I couldn't figure out how to disable the avgrsx.exe and end process didn't work in task manager. Hopefully I won't see problems from running combofix with that running. Do you have any recommendations about how to easily disable and re-enable AVG? Can't seem to find much helpful info online on this topic either. Or should I just run combofix from safemode moving forward?

Update Adobe Reader

1. Please uninstall Adobe Reader 7.0.5 before installing the latest version by going to Start > Control Panel and double clicking on Add/Remove Programs. Locate Adobe Reader 7.0.5 and click on Change/Remove to uninstall it.
   Be sure not to remove any of the paid for Adode programs you have installed
2. Click here to download the latest version of Adobe Acrobat Reader.
3. Select your Windows version and click on Download. If you are using Internet Explorer, you will receive prompts. Allow the installation to be ran and it will be installed automatically for you.
   
   If you are using other browsers, it will prompt you to save a file. Save this file to your desktop and run it to install the latest version of Adobe Reader.
4. Close your Internet browser and open it again.

Also when you are in add/remove programs remove this Older version of java below, it has have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system

• Click "Exit".
• Repeat for all usernames.

Please go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.

1. Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
2. It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
3. When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
4. Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
   Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
   Archives
   Mail databases
5. Click on My Computer under Scan.
6. Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
7. You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
8. Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
