Trojan, or SOME sort of malware

Unread postby philofresca » March 28th, 2009, 5:22 am

Please help! I'm getting wayyyy more pop-ups than usual and sometimes I'm redirected to a page that I didn't enter because it may have been taking to long to load. I'm not sure what's going on. I'm pretty sure I have some sort of a trojan or something and I'm very nervous handling any sort of sensitive information on this computer now, though it's the only one I have!

Thank you!
Greg

Welcome.

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware.

  • Install the program by following the prompts after double-clicking on mbam-setup.exe
  • Once you approach the final installation screen, put a check next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish
  • MBAM (that's an acronym of Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware) will now start. Choose Perform full scan and click Scan
  • Get a cup of coffee/tea/hot chocolate and watch some TV for about an hour.
  • Once the scan has finished, click OK, then Show Results.
  • Put a check next to everything, then click Remove selected.
  • Now, a log will open. Save this to your desktop and post it.

You're most welcome :)

I was actually expecting Malwarebytes' to find a bit more things which showed up in your hijackthis log. It may, however, be that they were already taken care of by *something* else.

Just to be sure, let's take a closer look:

DDS (Doesn't Do Squat)
Download DDS by sUBs to your desktop.
Your antivirus software might question the file. If it does, turn it off please :)
  • Double click DDS.scr to run it and wait for the scan to finish
  • When finished DDS.txt will open
  • A small while later, a prompt will open. Answer Yes
  • DDS will continue scanning
  • When done, Attach.txt will open
  • Post DDS.txt and attach Attach.txt

Malwarebytes may not have found as much as HJT because I restored my computer to a previous point a few weeks ago before I was having problems, but I wasn't sure this had taken care of EVERYTHING, since it seemed my computer was still acting a little funny.

Anyways, here's the DDS logfile:

Also, the program suggested I might want to compress the Attach file, but I checked and you didn't ask to do that, so I erred on the side of caution and just compressed the actual txt file. Let me know if you would like me to do otherwise.

I truly appreciate the help you're giving me!

OK, thanks for informing me. System restore will likely have done some good, however it will also have removed diagnostic signs. On the bright side, that's not that big of a deal - a virus scanner should take out any remaining smut.

Also, the program suggested I might want to compress the Attach file, but I checked and you didn't ask to do that, so I erred on the side of caution and just compressed the actual txt file. Let me know if you would like me to do otherwise.

That's very considerate of you. :)
However, did you truncate any part of the log? I need to see the full log.

If the log's size exceeds 50 KB then compressing it is advisable, in any other cases it's not needed.

I truly appreciate the help you're giving me!

Then at least I must be doing something right! :D

Okay, some minor things we need to take care of have arisen.

Update your Adobe Reader
Your version of Adobe Reader is old and may contain security leaks. Please first uninstall the older version, then download and install the newest version from here.

I recommend you to uninstall these two programs as well:
AutoUpdate (note that this has nothing to do with your Windows automatic updates and is just deceptively named)
Browser Address Error Redirector

These two should be uninstalled as well:
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6
Java(TM) 6 Update 5

Those are still vulnerable. You already have the latest version of Java (Java 6 Update 13) which should be safe to use. These two are old and thus present a security risk. They can safely be removed.

Also, due to the policy Malware Removal holds against person-to-person filesharing programs (see here), I must ask you to uninstall BitLord 1.1.

After you have performed those steps, re-run DDS and post back the logs. There's no need to compress anything :D

Due to lack of activity this topic is now closed.

If you still require help, please open a new thread in the Infected? Virus, malware, adware, ransomware, oh my! forum, include a fresh FRST log, and wait for a new helper.
