Invisible Popups

Unread postby unknut » March 27th, 2009, 5:50 am

Hi, I'm having an "Invisible Pop-up" problem. Every so often its like something will open in the background, when i go to my task manager it says there is a internet explorer window open, but there is none visible. It minimizes all my games while im playing and after it does this a couple of times and i dont end process on the internet explorer process there will be ads playing through my speakers, sometimes sounds like a radio sometimes movie ad but they are all ads of some sort. Any help would be much appreciated, this problem has been going on for about 3 weeks and I still haven't figured it out. Here is my HijackThis log. Ever since I noticed this problem my Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware program doesnt work and I cant uninstall it either.

Please note that all instructions given are customised for this computer only, the tools used may cause damage if used on a computer with different infections.

If you think you have similar problems, please post a log in the HJT forum and wait for help.

Hi unknut and welcome to Malware Removal :)

I'm Dakeyras and I am going to try to assist you with your problem. Please take note of the below:

  • I will start working on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine!.
  • The process is not instant. Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine is clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • If you don't know, stop and ask! Don't keep going on.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
  • Refrain from running self fixes as this will hinder the malware removal process.
  • It may prove beneficial if you print of the following instructions or save them to notepad as I post them.
  • Your security programs may give warnings for some of the tools I will ask you to use. Be assured, any links I give are safe.

Before we start:

Please be aware that removing Malware is a hazardous undertaking. I will take care not to knowingly suggest courses of action that might damage your computer. However it is impossible for me to foresee all interactions that may happen between the software on your computer and those we'll use to clear you of infection, and I cannot guarantee the safety of your system. It is possible that we might encounter situations where the only recourse is to re-format and re-install your operating system, or to necessitate you taking your computer to a repair shop.

In light of this it would be wise for you to back up any files and folders that you don't want to lose before we start.

Next:

Your anti-virus application Grisoft AVG7 is out of date, however due to the nature of the infections I have thus far identified I highly doubt we would be able to install a more up to date application at this time. As soon as your system is more stable we will address this as soon as possible. Do Not remove the application for the time being , leave it in place!

Next:

Since it has been five days, lets carry out a more in-depth scan of your computer first before anymore proactive measures OK as follows:

  • Please download Random's System Information Tool by random/random from here and save it to your desktop.
Please make sure that RSIT.exe is on the your Desktop before running the application.
  • Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • Once it has finished, two logs will open:
    • log.txt will be opened maximized.
    • info.txt will be opened minimized.
  • Please post the contents of both log.txt and info.txt.

When completed the above, please post back the following:

  • Any problems encountered and or further symptoms?
  • Both RSIT logs. <-- Post them individually please.

Thank you very much for replying, as of right now the only thing else I can think of to add is that when i do a google search and I click a link i get forwarded to a random site instead of the site that i clicked on. I am using Firefox instead of the normal Internet Explorer browser. Here is the log.txt, I will post the info.txt in another reply like advised.

Re: Invisible Popups

Unread postby unknut » April 2nd, 2009, 10:14 pm

I guess I can also add that I have gotten a couple of blue screens of death recently. I haven't gotten any of those ever on this computer until I got infected. I'm hoping its only because what ever is on my computer overloaded my memory or something instead of an actual critical error that it has caused. I'm not sure if this is needed information or not but thought I should add it just in case.

Hi :)

Take your time with the below and make sure to read everything. If anything you do not understand and or any questions just ask myself OK

You're welcome! And thanks for the update on your computers situation.

This mainly can be attributed to the malware currently infesting your computer. I hope you have taken the advice in my prior post concerning backing up. I will be upfront with your good self, this is a badly infected system and I suspect there are even worse infections I have not yet detected.

You have a lot of out of date applications installed apart from the aforementioned Anti-Virus in my prior post. These are the Adobe and Java installations, I propose we remove these shortly as they are a potential back-door for malware to reinfect a system. I am sure you can live without the aforementioned for a few days. We will download/update these later on OK.

Also you have no third party software firewall installed, this I am surmising you do not have because you are a online gamer, fair play that is your choice. However far to many applications have direct access to the internet and in the exceptions list of the inbuilt Windows XP SP3 firewall. Please remove everything from the exceptions list as otherwise this is another back-door for malware in my humble opinion and I will remove the associated registry entries later on. You may put some back in the exceptions list after I give the all clear, though I highly advise against it. That would be your decision to make, however for the course of this malware removal process please do as I asked with regard to the aforementioned exceptions list.

Free up Hard-Drive Space:

System drive C: has 26 GB (17%) free of 153 GB

This is considered borderline. A Hard-Drive requires a bare minimum of 15% available free space to be able to function correctly, but at least 25% is better in my opinion.

I advise you read this article: What to do if your Computer's running slowly and choose to uninstall some software you do not need, this is just my advice as the lack of current Hard-Drive space will be impacting on overall system performance.

Peer to Peer Advice:

I notice there are signs of one or more P2P (Peer to Peer) File Sharing Programs on your computer.

Azureus

I'd like you to read the MRU policy for P2P Programs.

Now please go to Start >> Control Panel >> Add/Remove Programs and remove the following (if present):

Adobe Acrobat 4.0
Adobe Reader 8.1.1
Azureus
GameSpy Arcade <-- This is known for Adware.
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 10
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 11
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 7
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 9
Java(TM) 6 Update 12
Java(TM) 6 Update 3
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment 6 Update 1

Note: Take extra care in answering questions posed by any Uninstaller. Some questions may be worded to deceive you into keeping the program.

Question:

I notice a specific Anti Malware Eradication application is present on your system and been used, namely Avenger. What did you use this for please. Also I would like to see the log it produced which can be found here:

C:\avenger.txt

Next:

Please download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2
Link 3

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools
  • How To Temporarily Disable Your Anti-virus, Firewall And Anti-malware Programs can be read here
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Image

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Image

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Note: Do not forget to re-enable your Anti-Virus application after running the above scan!

Next:

I would like to view a list of currently installed software applications on you're PC. How to provide as follows:

Run HijackThis and click on Open the Misc Tools section.

  • Click Open Uninstall Manager...
  • Click Save list... and save it to your Desktop.
  • Copy and paste the file uninstall_list.txt into your next reply.

When completed the above, please post back the following in the order asked for:

  • How is you computer performing now? Any problems encountered and or any further symptoms?
  • Answer to Avenger query.
  • Avenger Log.
  • ComboFix Log.
  • Uninstall List.
  • A new HijackThis Log.

Re: Invisible Popups

Unread postby unknut » April 4th, 2009, 12:50 am

I freed up quite a bit of space by deleting movies I had on my computer and what not. I still get the iexplorer pop ups and this is getting more and more frustrating hahaha. I'm really trying to be patient but man hate it haha. Thank you for reminding me about my firewall, I was trying to be able to host games for WC3 and it wasn't working so i disabled my firewall all together to try it out, and i completely forgot to put it back up. I uninstalled zone alarm as well a while back.

Answer to that avenger question, I don't remember ever using a program named avenger... so that's very odd. Here is what the log said:

Thank you very much for you time and effort. If you think it would be alot easier to just scrub my drive, that is an option. If I should scrub my drive, what do you think I should install on my computer to prevent this from happening again? If scrubbing my drive isn't the best answer then disregaurd my last statement haha. Thank you very much again.

I also forgot to add, when i booted my computer into safe mode a while back when I tried to salvage my computer myself, before I asked you for help, that iexplorer thing was in my process list. So I'm not sure what to make of that.

Hi :)

OK this does explain a fair bit, never a wise move to leave any system with internet access that vulnerable without any form of firewall.

Answer to that avenger question, I don't remember ever using a program named avenger... so that's very odd. Here is what the log said:
That is fine, maybe someone else with access to your computer downloaded Avenger? This is one very powerful application and if used incorrectly it could render a system nothing more than a expensive door stop, no harm done however.

I cannot give you a combo log because my computer wont let me load up the program. It displays that it is on in my process list, but it does not open. Again more frustrations hahaha. I am very thankful for you help. For you to deal with this all the time...
Not a problem we will try a alternative method to enable ComboFix to run shortly and you are very welcome!

If we reach the situation were I deem a reformat and reinstallation of the operating system is the only recourse I will inform your good self.

Next:

OK lets try renaming ComboFix.exe as follows:

  • Right click on ComboFix.exe and select rename
  • Rename it Dakeyras1 and hit the enter/return key.

Now try to run Combofix again per my instructions.

If still unsuccessful please delete the renamed ComboFix and empty your Recycle Bin then proceed to the instructions below.

Next:

Now if this does not work either do not be alarmed as we will merely try a completely different approach OK

Download Combofix from any of the links below. You must rename it before saving it. Save it to your desktop.

Wow the number of processes being run under my name has significantly decreased! Other then that so far nothing out of the ordinary, the iexplorer hasn't popped up yet so far so good. Before I submit this I'm going to take a shower just to make sure if I'm still getting that pop up thing. I'm not sure if you wanted me to post the combofix log and the HJT log separately so I will do that anyway just in case. It will probably be easier for you to tell them apart. Here is the Combofix log:

When I woke up this morning AVG did a scheduled scan, I forgot to turn that off since you did not specify and it picked up 9 threats so far and I'm not sure if i should quarantine them or remove them from my computer. I always pick remove but a couple people told me it was a good idea to quarantine them. They would not tell me why, but why would I want to leave them on my computer sanitized or not? I don't understand how it didn't see these threats before... Some of these threats were things that combofix pointed out. Is that what combofix does? Takes away the wall that these trojans hide behind, or should i say the wooden horse they sit in haha.

Thats fine at this juncture though pretty much moot as in regard to my findings from researching the last set of logs your good self provided.

I have bad news I'm afraid :(

Two or more of the identified infections are a Backdoor Trojan and Rootkit.

OK since we are dealing with the aforementioned infection(s) I would be providing your good self with a disservice if I did not make you aware of the ramifications below:

This allows hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and Download and Execute files.

I would counsel you to disconnect this PC from the Internet immediately. If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.

Although an attempt could be made to clean this machine, it could never be considered to be truly clean, secure, or trustworthy. We could not say definitively that unknown and unseen malware will have been removed, nor will your system be restored to its pre-infection state. We cannot remedy unknown changes the malware may likely have made in order to allow itself access, nor can we repair the damage it may possibly have caused to vital system files. Additionally, it is quite possible that changes made to the system by the malware may impact negatively on your computer during the removal process. In short, your system may never regain its former stability or its full functionality without a reformat. Therefore, your best and safest course of action is a reformat and reinstallation of the Windows operating system, and that is the course we strongly recommend.

Please read these for more information:

How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud?

When Should I Format, How Should I Reinstall

I can attempt to clean this machine but I can't guarantee that it will be at all secure afterwords.

Should you have any questions, please feel free to ask.

Please let myself know what you have decided to do in your next post.

Wow... that is a very very big blow... I don't know weather I should feel elated we came out with a final course of action or if i should cry... Now i gotta call up all my banks and tell them to change my account info... wow... If i were to scrub my drive whats to say that I completely cleaned everything? I have read that it is possible for someone to make a few programs be missed while reformatting a drive... If that happens wouldn't that mean that even with a reformat I can still be infected? How do I reformat without that risk. If I were to reformat my drive, what programs should I be using to make sure this doesn't happen again? This really sucks. Thank you very much for your time and effort. I guess the bad guy wins this round :(.

Hi :)

Indeed it is not something you wished to learn and I assure a prudent course of action is to inform your financial institutions to apprise them of your situation. If I was in this situation myself I would as a matter of course.

In this instance the malware infections I have so far identified should not survive a reformat and reinstallation of the Windows operating system. If I thought a possibility some might survive the aforementioned reformat and reinstallation, there is a specific methodology we could apply but I honestly do not think in this situation it is required. I can by all means advise what to do after a reformat and reinstallation.

I do appreciate how frustrated you must feel and no the bad guys have not won because you have heeded my advice and opted for a reformat and reinstallation. Were as if I had carried out a attempted malware removal I could not guarantee that your computer would be at all secure afterwords and something I just could not detect remains and then one day you wonder why your bank statement shows erroneous entires.

Reformat and Reinstallation Advice:

  • Use an Anti Virus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.
Here are some free Anti Virus programs which i recommend to use:
    • Antivir PersonalEditionClassic
      • Free anti-virus software for Windows.
      • Detects and removes more than 50,000 viruses. Free support.
    • avast! 4 Home Edition
        • Anti-virus program for Windows.
        • The home edition is freeware for noncommercial users.
    • Update your Anti Virus Software - It is imperative that you update your Anti virus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your anti virus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.
    • Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.
Here are some free Firewalls which i recommend to use:
(Use only one, and disable your Windows Firewall)
  • Keep your system updated-Microsoft releases patches for Windows and other products regularly:
  • Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
    • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
    • Click once on the Security tab
    • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
    • Click once on the Custom Level button.
      • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
      • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
      • Change the Initialise and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
      • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
      • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
      • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
      • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
      • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
    • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
  • Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware - Download it from here
The tutorial on how to use MBAM is located here
  • Install WinPatrol - Download it from here
You can find information about how WinPatrol works here
  • Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.
    Download it from here
The tutorial on how to use Spyware Blaster is located here
  • Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically. Any questions feel free to ask OK!
