No luck after 4 days...need help...might be a rootkit

Unread postby joval43 » April 3rd, 2009, 12:13 am

Hi all. I have a problem I've been putting hours into every day with no relief. I think I have a rootkit infection. Weird dll files showing up in msconfig startup and Malwarebytes will show 2 problems but it comes back after removal and bootup with a newly named dll. I've tried rootkit scans and several different virus scanners. I'm not comfortable messing with deeper system files if I don't know what I'm removing. Here is my Hijack log. The problem is HKLM\..\Run: [Csikib] rundll32.exe "C:\WINDOWS\eyupoxul.dll",e This keeps appearing in startup and I just can't get rid of it. The result is occasional browser redirection. That's all I've noticed. It's not that bad but several times a day I notice I'm redirected either to a shopping site or spyware removal site. Hasn't slowed the computer down much either. No crazy popups. I'd love some help. I'm pretty good with computers but just can't get to this one. And, I hate knowing it's on the system. Thanks ahead. Joanne

Hello and welcome to the forums :hello2:

I am Wi[k]! and I will be helping you today. As I am an undergrad my posts must be checked by a teacher so there can be a delay. HijackThis logs can take time to analyze so be patient.

In the meantime create a uninstall list.

  • Start HijackThis.
  • Click Open the Misc Tools section
  • Click Open Uninstall Manager
  • Click Save list...
  • Save the list to your desktop, or any other convenient place.

Post that in your next reply.

Also, could you update Malwarebytes to get the latest definitions and do a full scan. Afterward, post the log it produces. The log can also be found on the log tab of Malwarebytes.

Just want to say thank you. I'm currently scanning with an updated version of Malwarebytes. It may take a while so I'll post that log when it's done. For now, here is the unistall log from Hijack this. I'm so appreciative and take all the time you need...I'm not in a hurry here...just want to fix this!

Hello

Open up Malwarebytes and do another scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts,
  • click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process, if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.
------------------------------------------------

Please download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2
Link 3

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools.
Please open the AVG 8 Control Center, by right clicking on the AVG 8 icon on task bar.

    • Click on Tools.
    • Select Advanced.
    • In the left hand pane, scroll down to "Resident Shield".
    • In the main pane, deselect the option to "Enable Resident Shield."
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.
When finished, it will produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log.

Re: No luck after 4 days...need help...might be a rootkit

Unread postby Wi[k]! » April 5th, 2009, 7:28 am

1. Close any open browsers.

2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

3. Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into it:

File::
c:\windows\imsins.BAK
c:\windows\system32\4661E.mht
c:\windows\system32\f2720.tmp
c:\windows\system32\9a91F.sys
c:\windows\winstart.bat
c:\documents and settings\Mike\Start Menu\Programs\Startup\PowerReg Scheduler V3.exe
c:\windows\pss\PowerReg Scheduler V3.exe
C:\WINDOWS\oritexaq.dll

Folder::
c:\documents and settings\All Users\Application Data\SecTaskMan

Registry::
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
Csikib"=-
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\system\currentcontrolset\control\lsa]
"Authentication Packages"=hex(7):6d,73,76,31,5f,30,00,00
[-HKLM\~\startupfolder\C:^Documents and Settings^Mike^Start Menu^Programs^Startup^PowerReg Scheduler V3.exe]
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\run-]
"Csikib"=-
[HKLM\~\services\sharedaccess\parameters\firewallpolicy\standardprofile\GloballyOpenPorts\List]
"10740:TCP"=-
"10740:UDP"=-
"12093:TCP"=-
"12093:UDP"=-

Driver::
9a91F

Save this as "CFScript.txt", and as Type: All Files (*.*) in the same location as ComboFix.exe

Image

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe

When finished, it shall produce a log for you at C:\ComboFix.txt which I will require in your next reply.
--------------------------------------------------

Open HijackThis and choose to do a system scan only. Place a check next to the following entries:

O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {327C2873-E90D-4c37-AA9D-10AC9BABA46C} - (no file)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Csikib] rundll32.exe "C:\WINDOWS\oritexaq.dll",e
O9 - Extra button: EmpirePoker - {77E68763-4284-41d6-B7E7-B6E1F053A9E7} - C:\Program Files\EmpirePoker\EmpirePoker.exe (file missing)
O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: EmpirePoker - {77E68763-4284-41d6-B7E7-B6E1F053A9E7} - C:\Program Files\EmpirePoker\EmpirePoker.exe (file missing)

Then with ALL open windows closed, nothing but HijackThis open click Fix checked.

Optional fix: Party Poker, PartyCasino, UltimateBet, EmpirePoker, and the related sites are a risk and that's where most malware gets installed. Online Poker sites are well known for placing all manner of Internet parasites on their visitors' computers and continue to do so. They should be highly suspect for any Malware on your computer. In a lot of cases, these Poker plugins are also getting installed without your asking for it. Two safe alternatives are PokerStars and Pogo.com.

I reccomend you uninstall the following program:

Best of Poker
--------------------------------------------------

There is a(re) file(s) I do not recognize, please carry out the following:
  • Please visit Jotti Online Malware Scan
  • Copy the following line into the white text box:
  • c:\windows\system32\7401C44507.dll
  • Click Submit.
  • Please post the results of this scan to this thread.
Note: If the server is busy at the above site, try this alternative site:
  • Go to Virus Total-Upload A File.
  • Copy the following line into the white text box:
  • c:\windows\system32\7401C44507.dll
  • Click Send.
  • Please post the results of this scan to this thread.
--------------------------------------------------

Open up Ccleaner and clear the temp files.

--------------------------------------------------

Click on Start > Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs. Uninstall the following programs from the list:

Adobe Reader 7.0.9
Java(TM) 6 Update 7

Download and install the latest version of java from: Here
Download the latest version of Adobe: Adobe Reader 9
Note: Adobe Reader 9 is rather a large program, if you prefer a small program you can install Foxit Reader. However, if you choose to do so make sure not to install the toolbar.
--------------------------------------------------

Do an online scan with Kaspersky's Online Scanner

  • Click on accept and updating will commence to download the latest virus definitions.
  • On the left side, under Scan click on My Computer, a scan will start.
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
  • You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
  • Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
  • Please post this log in your next reply.

Note: There is a tutorial Here if you need to see one.

In your next reply:

A new HJT log

Hi there. I had a busy day today and have the Kaspersky Scan currently running. It's taking quite long so I may not get that result or the new HijackThis log until tomorrow as I'm going to bed...can't keep myself up for the scan results but it has found one new threat. I'll include the Combofix log, though, and I did the updates and took the appropriate files off the system. The problem is that a new dll keeps popping up...like before. The old dll disappeared that you wanted me to delete: O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Csikib rundll32.exe "C:\WINDOWS\oritexaq.dll",e but now a new dll file has appeared (oyoxeruxile.dll) in my startup when I used msconfig to check what is running. So, that's my concern. Also I scanned that one file you weren't sure about with Jotti and it came up with nothing. Here is that log: I'll get you the rest of the logs tomorrow. It's still scanning and will be for some time! Thanks so much for all your time and effort!

Hello,

While I await for those logs, please complete the following as well.

Just as you uploaded and scanned the other file, repeat the steps for this file: c:\windows\ipsdifx.dll

Also, could you update Malwarebytes and do a quick scan, no need for a full scan, remove everything it finds and post back the log.

Include the following in your next reply:

Kaspersky report
New HJT log
MBAM report
Analysis of the file.

Hello,

Did you reboot the computer so Malwarebytes could delete the file? If not do so now. Run another quick scan and see if it picks up anything. If it does, check to remove everything, and if MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts; click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer please do so immediately.
--------------------------------------------------

Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the codebox below into it:

Code: Select all
http://www.malwareremoval.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=41520

Suspect::
c:\windows\ipsdifx.dll
Registry::
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\system\currentcontrolset\control\lsa]
"Notification Packages"=hex(7):73,63,65,63,6c,69,00,00

Save this as "CFScript.txt", and as Type: All Files (*.*) in the same location as ComboFix.exe

Image

Referring to the picture above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply.

**Note**

When CF finishes running, the ComboFix log will open along with a message box--do not be alarmed. With the above script, ComboFix will capture files to submit for analysis.
  • Ensure you are connected to the internet and click OK on the message box.
--------------------------------------------------

Open HijackThis and choose to do a system scan only. Place a check next to the following entries:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Csikib] rundll32.exe "C:\WINDOWS\oyoxeruxile.dll",e

Then with ALL open windows closed including this one, nothing but HijackThis open click Fix checked.
--------------------------------------------------

Also, there appears to be a phishing file in your sent box news.qwest.net using Outlook Express delete it from your sent box.
--------------------------------------------------

Finally reboot after completing the steps above.

In your next reply:

A new HJT log after rebooting
Malwarebytes report
Combofix log
How is the computer running? Any problems?

In reply to your question, yes I had rebooted malwarebytes for deletion of the infected files. I ran another scan, it picked up a couple more infected files and I deleted them. Also, I couldn't delete the file you requested (O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Csikib] rundll32.exe "C:\WINDOWS\oyoxeruxile.dll",e) with hijackthis as it was deleted already by malewarebytes. But, another dll popped up as you will see in the logs. The dlls reappear without reboot, also. A new dll is put back on the system after a few minutes. You'll see a new one in the hijackthis log. I got that news.quest.net file off also. I noticed a browser redirect this morning. That seems to be the symptom of this persistant virus. Here are the logs..

Hello :)

Follow the steps in the order listed.

Delete the copy of combofix you have and download a new copy. Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running the tool:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

* Ensure you have disabled all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply for further review. Re-enable Avg after combofix has finished scanning.
--------------------------------------------------

GMER
Do not touch the computer while GMER is running! If you do, it'll go completely unresponsive and you'll have to shut it down using the power switch. Just don't touch the PC while GMER is working.
Please download gmer.zip by GMER and save it to your desktop.

  • Right click the file you just downloaded and choose Extract all
  • Click Next
  • Click Browse
  • Click the + next to My Computer
  • Click Local Disk (C:)
  • Click Make new folder
  • Enter GMER
  • Click OK, then Next
  • Check Show extracted files and click Finish
  • Double click on GMER.exe to run it.
  • Select the Rootkit tab.
  • On the right hand side, check all the items to be scanned, but leave Show All box unchecked.
  • Select all drives that are connected to your system to be scanned.
  • Click on the Scan button.
  • When the scan is finished, click Copy to save the scan log to the Windows clipboard.
  • Open Notepad or a similar text editor.
  • Paste the clipboard contents into the text editor.
  • Save the GMER scan log and post it in your next reply.
  • Close GMER.
--------------------------------------------------

Download GooredFix and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click the tool to run it.
  • Select 1. Find Goored (no fix) by typing 1 and pressing enter
  • A log will open, copy and paste its contents in your next reply. The log is also copied onto your desktop, with a name of Goored.txt
--------------------------------------------------

  • Download The Avenger by Swandog46 from here.
  • Unzip/extract it to a folder on your desktop.
  • Double click on avenger.exe to run The Avenger.
  • Click OK.
  • Make sure that the box next to Scan for rootkits has a tick in it and that the box next to Automatically disable any rootkits found does not have a tick in it.
  • Copy all of the text in the below textbox to the clibpboard by highlighting it and then pressing Ctrl+C.
    Code: Select all
    Registry values to delete:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run|csikib
    Files to delete:
    C:\WINDOWS\oloxudipo.dll
  • In the avenger window, click the Paste Script from Clipboard, Image button.
  • Click the Execute button.
  • You will be asked Are you sure you want to execute the current script?.
  • Click Yes.
  • You will now be asked First step completed --- The Avenger has been successfully set up to run on next boot. Reboot now?.
  • Click Yes.
  • Your PC will now be rebooted.
  • Note: If the above script contains Drivers to delete: or Drivers to disable:, then The Avenger will require two reboots to complete its operation.
  • If that is the case, it will force a BSOD on the first reboot. This is normal & expected behaviour.
  • After your PC has completed the necessary reboots, a log should automatically open. If it does not automatically open, then the log can be found at %systemdrive%\avenger.txt (typically C:\avenger.txt).
  • Please post this log, along with a new HijackThis log in your next reply.

In your next reply:

New combofix log
GMER log
Gooredfix.txt
Avenger log
New HJT log[/quote]

Hi there. Just wanted to let you know that the heatsink fan went out on the computer today. As you can imagine, I'm pretty frustrated. We are't having the best luck lately with this computer! I've been trying all day to find just a fan instead of replacing the whole heatsink. I ended up ordering a fan long distance as our fan is 70mm...smaller than standard. I don't want to attempt to replace the whole heatsink though I probably could do it. Anyway, our computer will be out of commission for a few days until I get this fan in the mail. I will email you daily to let you know the status and as soon as I get the computer working, I'll proceed with the latest virus scanning procedures. Thanks so much for all your help. I really appreciate your patience and dilligence! Talk to you tomorrow.
