I've ran Spyware Terminator yesterday and again this afternoon. It never has picked up anything that it can't fix or delete until today. So they suggested shutting down and then reboot and run the scan again. Which I just did. It has about four threats that it states it can't delete or fix.

Could you look over my log and see if there is anything in it that shouldn't be.

Thanks so much.
Sande

Ok...my computer has been hit with something else since I posted the first log.

System Security Version 4.51 has installed itself on my computer. Every two seconds a screen pops up telling me I have 38 trojans and but to use the program you have to pay. A screen keeps coming up saying Lsas.Blaster.Keyloger is attempting to gather personal information such as credit card info. I can barely go anywhere online that it doesn't pop up...both on IE and Firefox.

Computer keeps freezing up.
I unstalled the System Security but its still here. I rebooted and its still here.

I ran all programs...and nothing is showing.
So I went to do a system restore and it says no restore points are available. Ran a search and dozens of system retores where done on the 31st of March and so on. I never did one.

Ran a new HiJackThis

Re: Check this out.....

Unread postby Carolyn » April 6th, 2009, 11:44 am

Hello and Welcome to the forums!

My name is Carolyn and I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems. HijackThis logs can take some time to research, so please be patient with me. I know that you need your computer working as quickly as possible, and I will work hard to help see that it happens.

Please do not run any other tool untill instructed to do so!
Please reply to this thread, do not start another!
Please tell me about any problems that have occurred during the fix.
Please tell me of any other symptoms you may be having as these can help also.
Please try as much as possible not to run anything while executing a fix.

If you follow these instructions, everything should go smoothly.

================================================

I notice that there is more than one antivirus program installed on your computer. This is very dangerous, as multiple antivirus programs can interfere with one another and actually allow MORE viruses to get through. When you have more than one antivirus program installed at the same time, they conflict with each other rendering the computer vulnerable or unusable.

It is NOT safe to have more than one anti-virus installed on a system, and doing so not only does NOT provide better protection, it will actually cause additional problems. Anti-virus programs patch into the system kernel. Having more than one anti-virus patching into the system kernel will not only destabilize a system, it can corrupt system files and it WILL cause crashes!

Go to "Start -> Control Panel -> Add/Remove Programs" and uninstall all but one antivirus program.

================================================

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and save it to a convenient location.
  1. Double click on mbam-setup.exe to install it.
  2. Before clicking the Finish button, make sure that these 2 boxes are checked (ticked):
      Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
      Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  3. Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware will now check for updates. If your firewall prompts, please allow it. If you can't update it, select the Update tab. Under Update Mirror, select one of the websites and click on Check for Updates.
  4. Select the Scanner tab. Click on Perform full scan, then click on Scan.
  5. Leave the default options as it is and click on Start Scan.
  6. When done, you will be prompted. Click OK, then click on Show Results.
  7. Check (tick) all items except items in the C:\System Volume Information folder and click on Remove Selected.
  8. After it has removed the items, Notepad will open. Please post this log in your next reply. You can also find the log in the Logs tab. The bottom most log is the latest.

Next,
  • Download random's system information tool (RSIT) by random/random from here and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • Once it has finished, two logs will open. Please post the contents of both log.txt (<<will be maximized) and info.txt (<<will be minimized)

Please post the following:
  1. The Malwarebyte's Anti-Malware log
  2. The contents of log.txt
  3. The contents of info.txt

Hello Carolyn

I have managed to remove the System Security Version 4.51 from the computer and so far, its hasn't appeared and my browsers (IE and Firefox) are both operating without being redirected.

I had ran Malwarebytes last night and it took four hours, it actually completed in the early am this morning. I'll post that long and if you require on that is ran immediately, let me know. It found 13 issues and all of them were removed and computer seems to be running better than it was.

Here are the other two files you asked for.

Hi,

Registry Cleaners

I notice the presence of Advanced SystemCare 3 Registry Cleaner on your pc.

I don't personally recommend the use of ANY registry cleaners.
Here is an excerpt from a discussion on regcleaners
Most reg cleaners aren't "bad" as such, but they aren't perfect and even the best have been known to cause problems.
The point we are trying to make is that the risk of using one far outweighs any benefit.
If it does work perfectly you will not see any difference
If it doesn't work properly you may end up with an expensive doorstop.

Disable Spybot's TeaTimer. This is a two step process.

Spybot S&D's tea timer normally provides real-time protection from spyware, however it may interfere with what we need to do. We will disable it until the machine is clean when it can be re-enabled.

First step:
  • Right-click the Spybot Icon in the System Tray (looks like a blue/white calendar with a padlock symbol)
  • If you have the new version 1.5, Click once on Resident Protection, then Right click the Spybot icon again and make sure Resident Protection is now Unchecked. The Spybot icon in the System tray should now be now colorless.
  • If you have Version 1.4, Click on Exit Spybot S&D Resident
Second step, For Either Version :
  • Open Spybot S&D
  • Click Mode, choose Advanced Mode
  • Go To the bottom of the Vertical Panel on the Left, Click Tools
  • then, also in left panel, click Resident shows a red/white shield.
  • If your firewall raises a question, say OK
  • In the Resident protection status frame, Uncheck the box labeled Resident "Tea-Timer"(Protection of over-all system settings) active
  • OK any prompts.
  • Use File, Exit to terminate Spybot
  • Reboot your machine for the changes to take effect.
Don't forget to re-enable it, when your computer is clean.

Carolyn

Just wanted to let you know, its going to be awhile.

I have everything completed and was 97% completed on the Kaspersky scan. That took almost seven hours...yikes! Well...the electricity went out in our community for about 3 seconds and wiped out all the progress Kaspersky had made, so I have to start over.

Just wanted to give you a heads up. Hopefully, the electricity will stay on and it will be completed by morning.

Thanks for all your help so far.

Hi,

Make an uninstall list using HijackThis
To access the Uninstall Manager you would do the following:

1. Start HijackThis
2. Click on the Config button
3. Click on the Misc Tools button
4. Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.
5. Click on the Save list... button and specify where you would like to save this file. When you press Save button a notepad will open with the contents of that file. Simply copy and paste the contents of that notepad here in your next reply.

Please post the Uninstall List and let me know which anti-virus program you uninstalled?

Hello,

You still have more than one Antivirus program installed. Please uninstall a-squared free 4.0 from your computer.

====================

Using Windows Explore by right-clicking the Start button and left clicking Explore navigate to and find the following folder: if found, delete it

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users.WINDOWS\Application Data\PC Tools <<Folder

Now empty you’re Recycle Bin.

====================

This is my general post for when your logs show no more signs of malware ;)- Please let me know if you still are having problems with your computer and what these problems are

Your log now appears to be clean. Congratulations!

Please take the time to tell us what you would like to be done about the people who are behind all the problems you have had. We can only get something done about this if the people that we help, like you, are prepared to complain. We have a dedicated forum for collecting these complaints Malware Complaints. You need to be registered to post as, unfortunately, we were hit with too many spam posts to allow guest posting to continue. Just find your country room and register your complaint.

Protection Programs
Don't forget to re-enable any protection programs we disabled during your fix.

Please delete RSIT from your computer.

General Security and Computer Health
Below are some steps to follow in order to dramatically lower the chances of reinfection. You may have already implemented some of the steps below, however you should follow any steps that you have not already implemented.

  • Clear Infected System Restore Points
    • Turn System Restore off
    • On the Desktop, right click on the My Computer icon.
    • Click Properties.
    • Click the System Restore tab.
    • Check Turn off System Restore.
    • Click Apply, and then click OK.
      Restart your computer

    • Turn System Restore on
    • On the Desktop, right click on the My Computer icon.
    • Click Properties.
    • Click the System Restore tab.
    • Uncheck *Turn off System Restore*.
    • Click Apply, and then click OK.
Note: only do this once, and not on a regular basis

  • Set correct settings for files
    • Click Start > My Computer > Tools menu (at top of page) > Folder Options > View tab.
    • Under Hidden files and folders if necessary select Do not show hidden files and folders.
    • If unchecked please check Hide protected operating system files (Recommended)
    • If necessary check Display content of system folders
    • If necessary Uncheck Hide file extensions for known file types.
    • Click OK

  • Make sure that you keep your antivirus updated
New viruses come out every minute, so it is essential that you have the latest signatures for your antivirus program to provide you with the best possible protection from malicious software.
Note: You should only have one antivirus installed at a time. Having more than one antivirus program installed at once is likely to cause conflicts and may well decrease your overall protection as well as impairing the performance of your PC.

  • Security Updates for Windows, Internet Explorer & Microsoft Office
Whenever a security problem in its software is found, Microsoft will usually create a patch so that after the patch is installed, attackers can't use the vulnerability to install malicious software on your PC. Keeping up with these patches will help to prevent malicious software being installed on your PC. Ensure you are registered for Windows updates via Start > right-click on My Computer > Properties > Automatic Updates tab or visit the Microsoft Update site on a regular basis.
Note: The update process uses ActiveX, so you will need to use internet explorer for it and allow the ActiveX control to install.

  • Update Non-Microsoft Programs
Microsoft isn't the only company whose products can contain security vulnerabilities. To check whether other programs running on your PC are in need of an update, you can use the Secunia Software Inspector - I suggest that you run it at least once a month.

  • Make Internet Explorer More Secure
You are using Internet Explorer v. 7. Therefore please read and follow the recommendations at this SITE

Recommended Programs

I would recommend the download and installation of some or all of the following programs (if not already present), and the updating of them on a regular basis.

  • WinPatrol
As a robust security monitor, WinPatrol will alert you to hijackings, malware attacks and critical changes made to your computer without your permission. WinPatrol takes snapshot of your critical system resources and alerts you to any changes that may occur without your knowledge. For more information, please visit HERE.

  • SpywareBlaster
SpywareBlaster sets killbits in the registry to prevent known malicious ActiveX controls from installing on your computer. If you don't know what ActiveX controls are, see HERE. You can download SpywareBlaster from HERE.

  • Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware or SuperAntiSpyware
These are anti-malware applications that can thoroughly remove even the most advanced malware. They include a number of features, including a built in protection monitor that blocks malicious processes before they even start.
You can download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from HERE. You can find a tutorial HERE.
You can download SuperAntiSpyware from HERE.

  • Use an alternative Internet Browser
Many of the exploits are directed to users of Internet Explorer. Try using a different browser instead:
    Firefox
    Opera

Finally I am trying to make one point very clear. It is absolutely essential to keep all of your security programs up to date.

Also please read this great article by Tony Klein So How Did I Get Infected In First Place

I'd be grateful if you could reply to this post so that I know you have read it and, if you've no other questions, the thread can be closed.

Thanks so much for all your help and your patience when waiting for updates. Its wonderful that you and so many others give your time to help others.

I did everything you suggested in your last message. I also removed the second antivirus...I thought that was for malware....I should have checked. Thanks for the advice on not having more than one anti virus.

I was really surprised that I got hit with the malware and assorted other things, I make sure everything is updated everyday and run all of them as well. I guess you just never know how they exactly get into your computer even if you have what you think is 100% protection.

Do you have any idea why are my system restore points where gone? When all this started with the Malware, I tried to remove it and when all else failed went to do a system restore and there were not points available and I hadn't gone in there for months.

So far everything seems to be running perfectly....except for last night IE went insane and opened at least 100 windows..as soon as I closed a group a new group of 30 popped up. Could it have anything to do with the version I'm using? I use Firefox as far as browsers go, except for using IE for MySpace...not sure why but my Firefox won't work on MySpace. :?

Again..thank you so very much and have a super holiday weekend.

Hmm.....update.

This morning I log on and was using Firefox as usual.

I went to search something on Google and it kept taking me to unwanted websites that had nothing to do with the subject that I was looking for. It kept redirecting Firefox. No sure if its a issue with IE as I only use that I as I said for MySpace.

I made sure everything was updated and ran anti virus, spyware and malware programs and spyware showed the Firefox is being redirected. It cleared those files and it's still happening.

Not sure if this is a new problem or if the original problem isn't as clean as we had hoped.

Any assistance is greatly appreciated.

Please download GooredFix and save it to your Desktop. Double-click Goored.exe to run it. Select 1. Find Goored (no fix) by typing 1 and pressing Enter. A log will open, please post the contents of that log in your next reply (it can also be found on your desktop, called GooredLog.txt). Note: Do not run Option #2 yet.

==========================

  1. Please download OTListIt2 by OldTimer from Geeks to Go. Save it your desktop.
  2. Double click on OTListIt2.exe to run it.
  3. Under Extra Registry section, select Use SafeList.
  4. Copy the lines in the codebox below.
Code: Select all
Drivers32

  • Return to OTListIt2, right click in the Custom Scans/Fixes window (under the blue bar) and choose Paste.
  • Click on Run Scan at the top left hand corner.
  • When done, two Notepad files will open. Please post the contents of these 2 Notepad files in your next reply. One log per reply please.

==========================

Please post the following:
  • The OTListIt2 logfile
  • The OTListIt2 Extras logfile
  • The GooredFix log
  • Also, do a few google searches with Internet Explorer and tell me if you get redirected.
