I am not buying that. I just tried to write to a CF card which has 8 GB capacity and still no go. Further, I successfully copied another file onto a CD using this computer and the same drive and the same method of copying. I do not know what is wrong but software/hardware is not it.

Last option is that the download is corrupt.

go here: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HowToMD5SUM
and follow the instructions for "MD5SUM on Windows"
compare the md5sum you get with the one listed on this page: http://releases.ubuntu.com/8.10/MD5SUMS
If they're not identical then your download is corrupt.

Otherwise it must be a hardware/software issue.

this line is missing from the second sum

Does this indicate a corrupt download? If so, do you have an alternate site?
thanx

Not what I meant.

I meant the .iso image you downloaded (the 700 MB file we were trying to get onto CD)

It had one of those names - which?

I just realized what you meant and was on the Ubuntu web site when you dinged. I do not know the name of the file because when I downloaded it I changed the name from whatever it was to simply Ubuntu. I am now going to RE download the file and make sure it is for Vista desktop. Sound good?

As luck would have it, upon beginning a new download the name of the file that I had downloaded naturally came up. It was ubuntu-8.10-desktop-i386.iso.

OK. Now run WinMD5sum on that ISO as per the link I gave you.

When you have right clicked the ISO and chosen Send to -> WinMD5sum, click Calculate.
Once the MD5sum of the file has been calculated, copy and paste this into the Compare box:
Code: Select all
24ea1163ea6c9f5dae77de8c49ee7c03

and click Compare.

If the sums do not match, your download is corrupt. Delete the ISO, redownload it and try again.

If the sums match, then it must be a hardware/software problem and I can't help you with it (I am only trained to assist with malware issues).

If it turns out to be a hardware/software problem and if you feel comfortable with it, you can then just skip the whole Ubuntu thing and follow the instructions I gave you here. They SHOULD not cause any issues, but, as you've already addressed, an extra safety net can't hurt, and if you really need that extra safety I understand. In that case you may wish to opt to get that problem sorted out first; this thread will then be closed and archived and when you've got everything ready we can continue.

When I right click the ISO file there is not an option to send to winMd5sum. I have to go to c:/programs/winMd5sum and open it. I get this dialog box. Can you fill the blanks for me? I know the file name is

ubuntu-8.10-desktop-i386
but the other values elude me

I have found the entries needed and this is what I get. That was when I clicked calculate. If I click "compare", then I get a message that the sums are not equal. This is on the second download of ubuntu.

Sorry, I was not aware things had changed.

Under File Name, click the box with the three dots in it. A browse window should open. Navigate to the iso file you downloaded and double click it to open it.

Click calculate.

Once finished, copy and paste this into the compare box and click compare:
Code: Select all

I burned the Ubuntu program! No matter what the indications are from winMd5Sum, I burned the program! :cheese: I realize that the "sums" might yet be different but I am betting that they are not. I also was able to burn it to a CD, not a DVD as you said. I used "Infrarecorder", link here

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BurningIsoHowto

This is an open source document completely free of charge. I now suggest that there is not now and never was a problem with my computer hardware. I simply did not have the correct software. I looke all over the internet for how to burn that thing! I have to go to work now so I will do the winMd5Sum tonight. Have a good day.

That's great news!

I'll keep in mind to not recommend the ISO recorder plug-in anymore... LOL :P

OK, now that we've got a solid disaster plan, do this next when you've got the time: viewtopic.php?p=420649#p420649

Let me know how you're doing :)

Oh, before you start performing those instructions, let's back up all settings just in case.

Backup the registry
  1. Download ERUNT to your desktop from HERE
  2. Double-click on the file to install the program
  3. Uncheck the NTREGOPT desktop shortcut option
  4. Click No when you get the option to run ERUNT at Windows startup.
  5. During the installation, check Launch ERUNT
  6. Accept the defaults for running a backup
  7. ERUNT will then back up your registry

If have downloaded IE7 and copied to a disk, can it be installed like that? Same as for IE8. The site you gave a link to does not have an IE7 download on it. it informs me that I already have IE7 on my computer due to Vista being on my computer. It wants me to upgrade to IE8. However, I found an IE7 download and saved it to my desktop. All I need to do is burn it to a disk. So, are we going to forget about running the winMd5Sum? Again, on the DNS opt out there is a place for me to alter the IP address of where I search from. I already know that it is not correct, IE will not run after that IP is filled in.
