Unread postby Trinity_3000 » March 11th, 2009, 6:43 pm

Since around 8pm March 10, Google and Firefox searches are being redirected to random sites (break.com, random youtube videos). Perhaps occured when trying to watch a video, I was asked to run an ActiveX control right before the problem started to occur. Log is as follows:

Please note that all instructions given are customised for this computer only, the tools used may cause damage if used on a computer with different infections.

If you think you have similar problems, please post a log in the HJT forum and wait for help.

Hi Trinity_3000 and welcome to Malware Removal :)

I'm Dakeyras and I am going to try to assist you with your problem. Please take note of the below:

  • I will start working on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine!.
  • The process is not instant. Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine is clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • If you don't know, stop and ask! Don't keep going on.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
  • Refrain from running self fixes as this will hinder the malware removal process.
  • It may prove beneficial if you print of the following instructions or save them to notepad as I post them.
  • Your security programs may give warnings for some of the tools I will ask you to use. Be assured, any links I give are safe.

Next:

IMPORTANT I notice there are signs of one or more P2P (Peer to Peer) File Sharing Programs on your computer.

uTorrent

I'd like you to read the MRU policy for P2P Programs.

Please uninstall the program listed above (in red).

Next:

  • Please download Random's System Information Tool by random/random from here and save it to your desktop.
Make sure that RSIT.exe is on the your Desktop before running the application.
  • Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • Once it has finished, two logs will open:
    • log.txt will be opened maximized.
    • info.txt will be opened minimized.
  • Please post the contents of both log.txt and info.txt.

When completed the above, please post back the following:

  • Any problems encountered and or further symptoms ?
  • Both RSIT logs.

Thank you for your reply. I have uninstalled UTorrent. Am still encountering problems, all google searches are misdirected to other webpages, and some webpages have begun to spontaneously redirect to other sites. Also, the same Ad for Vimax pills seems to be appearing everywhere. The logs are as follows:

Re: Google and Firefox Browser Hijacked since yesterday night

Unread postby Dakeyras » March 16th, 2009, 3:05 pm

Hi :)

Thank you for your reply. I have uninstalled UTorrent.

You're welcome! Please also remove BitComet and LimeWire 5.1.1 as per the forum policy.

Next:

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

Alternate download link.

  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please post that log in your next reply.
The log can also be found here:
  1. Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  2. Click on the Logs radio tab.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process, if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

Next:

Please make sure that RSIT.exe is still on the Desktop.(if not inform myself straight away please)

  • Double click once on RSIT.exe
  • RSIT will start running, at the disclaimer click on Continue.
  • When done, 1 log will be produced.
  • Post that in your next reply.

When completed the above, please post back the following:

  • Any problems encountered and or further symptoms?
  • Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Log.
  • A new RSIT Log.

I have removed Limewire, but cannot find Bitcomet. It does not show up under Add/Remove programs, and after doing a search of my hard drive, no files come up. Also, when trying to access Hard Drive C: an error message that says "Windows cannot find RECYCLER\S-3-0-47-100015418-100025586-100032349-1887.com. Make sure you typed the file name correctly and try again". pops up and will not let me access that drive.

Also, I installed Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and setup completed succesfully, but the program will not open from the desktop or start menu. I uninstalled it, restarted my computer and installed the program again, with the same outcome. Should I be shutting down my Iolo antivirus program in order for Malwarebytes to run?
Please tell me my computer isn't completely fried (yet)!

Hi :)

OK no problem RE Bitcomet we can address that later.

The problem with MBAM I suspect is malware related not your Anti-Virus application. So please carry out the following so I can better diagnose what exactly is going on before addressing the MBAM issue.

Please tell me my computer isn't completely fried (yet)!
Anything is possible with regard to malware and what it does to a computer but I see no indication of this scenario so far.

Next:

Please download Rooter.exe to your desktop.

  • Then double-click it to start the tool.

Sorry for the long wait. No browsers are currently working on my machine, so I am replying from a different computer. Malware ran on third try on Monday before your reply. Once I removed the selected files and rebooted the computer, Internet Explorer would not work at all, and says there is a DNS error. System Restore is unable to start, and my computer cannot find any network locations even though my modem says all systems are running. Was on the phone with my service provider (Bell) for an hour last night trying to solve the DNS error, but their senior technician says its an issue with the system. I will not be able to download any software to my computer seeing as it doesn't think that I have an internet connection. Am planning on reformatting tomorrow.

Hi :)

No need to apoligise these things happen. A most unfortunate turn of events indeed.

However if you read this before carrying out the planned re-format/re-installation the situation may be salvageable.

A few questions for your good self:

  • Do you have a removable storage media such as a USB flash/pen type drive at all ? Is it OK to format the aforementioned or not ?
  • What is the type of Operating System in use on the other computer you have access to ?
  • Did you mange to download Rooter at at all and is RSIT still present on the infected system ?

I am running a Dell Dimension Computer. I was able to run the command prompt Ctrl + F11, and performed a Dell System restore (wow...much less time consuming than reformatting!). I backed up my important documents, but am now wary of opening them as they may be infected. Any way to check if these documents have been compromised?

The computer is back up and running, web browsers are working and no issues thus far. I have installed all recommended Microsoft updates. Should my system be clean? Or would you like me to run any more programs that will tell you for sure that everything is back to normal?

Thank you so much for your help on this issue so far. It was an unfortunate turn of events indeed that one day my system was fine, and the next it was all over the place!

Hi :)

OK if you definitely ran a a Dell System Restore rather than the Repair option, basically this wipes the Hard-Drive and reinstalls the Operating System to the condition it was when shipped from the factory. So in theory your system should be clean but we can run a few checks if you wish.

As for you backed up documents what have you saved them too ? Inform myself and I can advise how to check also.

Let me know RE the above and I will be happy to provide further assistance. In the meantime here is some advice how to keep your Operating System secure in the future:

  • Use an Anti Virus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.
Here are some free Anti Virus programs which i recommend to use:
    • Antivir PersonalEditionClassic
      • Free anti-virus software for Windows.
      • Detects and removes more than 50,000 viruses. Free support.
    • avast! 4 Home Edition
        • Anti-virus program for Windows.
        • The home edition is freeware for noncommercial users.
    • Update your Anti Virus Software - It is imperative that you update your Anti virus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your anti virus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.
    • Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.
Here are some free Firewalls which i recommend to use:
(Use only one, and disable your Windows Firewall)
  • Keep your system updated-Microsoft releases patches for Windows and other products regularly:
  • Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
    • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
    • Click once on the Security tab
    • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
    • Click once on the Custom Level button.
      • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
      • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
      • Change the Initialise and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
      • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
      • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
      • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
      • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
      • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
    • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
  • Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware - Download it from here
The tutorial on how to use MBAM is located here
  • Install WinPatrol - Download it from here
You can find information about how WinPatrol works here
  • Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.
    Download it from here
The tutorial on how to use Spyware Blaster is locate here
  • Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.

Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.
