Optional Fix

I see that Viewpoint is installed. Viewpoint, Viewpoint Manager, Viewpoint Media Player are Viewpoint components which are installed as a side effect of installing other software, most notably AOL and AOL Instant Messenger (AIM). Viewpoint Manager is responsible for managing and updating Viewpoint Media Player’s components. You can disable this using the Viewpoint Manager Control Panel found in the Windows Control Panel menu. By selecting Disable auto-updating for the Viewpoint Manager -- the player will no longer attempt to check for updates. Anything that is installed without your consent is suspect. Read what Viewpoint says and make your own decision.
To provide a satisfying consumer experience and to operate effectively, the Viewpoint Media Player periodically sends information to servers at Viewpoint. Each installation of the Viewpoint Media Player is identifiable to Viewpoint via a Customer Unique Identifier (CUID), an alphanumeric identifier embedded in the Viewpoint Media Player. The Viewpoint Media Player randomly generates the CUID during installation and uses it to indicate a unique installation of the product. A CUID is never connected to a user's name, email address, or other personal contact information. CUIDs are used for the sole purpose of filtering redundant information. Each of these information exchanges occurs anonymously.

Viewpoint Manager is considered as foistware instead of malware since it is installed without user's approval but doesn't spy or do anything bad. This may change, read Viewpoint to Plunge Into Adware.

I recommend that you remove the Viewpoint products; however, decide for yourself.

To uninstall the the Viewpoint components :
  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  2. In Control Panel, double-click Add or Remove Programs.
  3. In Add or Remove Programs, highlight >>Viewpoint component<< , click Remove.

How to prevent it from being recreated every time you run the AOL software:
    • Open AOL
    • Go to Help on the toolbar
    • Select About AOL
    • Hit Ctrl D and a secret panel can be accessed which will allow you to disable all desktop and IM features associated with Viewpoint.

Can you run me a full malwarebytes scan this time.

While the MWB scan was going the AVG detected a threat and popped up. It did not keep the mwb scan from finishing. The file name was c:/system volume information/_restore{D5341F9C-3357-8BD2-AE937C9BA1B}/RP1206/A0116133.dll
I clicked to move to vault.

Here is the MWB log followed by the Eset log.

Don't worry about files flagged they are quite safe and will get dealt with when I clean up the tools I've used.
Can you let me know how things are with the pc now.

I restarted and it seems to be back to normal. The search is not redirecting and the browser is back to the way it used to be. No more warning messages about HP Wireless when starting up either.

Well done!

Congratulations you are clean! :)
Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

You don't need to put all of these programs on your system unlike your Antivirus and firewall of which you can only have one of each.
However you can have several Antimalware programs

Here are some free programs I recommend that could help you improve your computer's security.

Spybot Search and Destroy 1.6.2
Download it from here. Just choose a mirror and off you go.
Find here the tutorial on how to use Spybot properly here
Find here changes from older version 1.4 here

Install Spyware Guard
Download it from here
Find here the tutorial on how to use Spyware Guard here

Install SpyWare Blaster
Download it from here
Find here the tutorial on how to use Spyware Blaster here

Install WinPatrol
Download it from here
Here you can find information about how WinPatrol works here

Install FireTrust SiteHound
You can find information and download it from here

Install MVPS Hosts File from here
The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer.
Find Tutorial here : http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm

Update your Antivirus programs and other security products regularly to avoid new threats that could infect your system.
You can use one of these sites to check if any updates are needed for your pc.
Secunia Software Inspector
F-secure Health Check

Visit Microsoft often to get the latest updates for your computer.

Dan,
Somehow I ended up with three java icons on my desktop. Can I just move them to a folder? What do i need to do to get them into a folder and not on the desktop. Also, do I uninstall all the programs we used while getting the computer clean? And one more question...I have ad-aware, spy doctor and AVG Free Anti Virus on my computer. Should I keep all of them or one of them or do you have better options?

Your icons I imagine would be shortcuts which you can delete as you can start up from the program menu or start menu if you wish.
The programs I have shown, you don't need to have them all!
I have removed combofix. malwarebytes is a good program to keep you just need to update on a regular basis.

Antivirus programs you only need one running on a pc at any one time, same goes for a firewall. AVG is fine just make sure you keep it upto date.
ad aware is fine also. I haven't used spyware doctor myself so hard to commment.

I don't think they are shortcuts. All three say they are applications when i click properties.
jre-6u12-windows-i586-p-iftw-k
jre-6u12-windows-i586-p
jre-6u12-windows-i586-p-iftw
I might have done that on installation when they asked me where to download them to.
I did not specify so it might have defaulted.

How often should I use the ATF cleaner?
I presume i can uninstall the JavaRa?

If you have problems with java, remove it and download it again from the java site. The installer may of defaulted to your desktop or where your default is but when you install, it normally installs to program files unless you specified an alternative place!

Once a quarter maybe.
Yes, you can delete javara

If I uninstall java, do i do it from the control panel? There is a java 6 update 12 and a java 6 update 7listed there. I presume I uninstall both then go back to the java site you gave me before and download the 12 one again.

Dan, thanks so much for all the help you have been to help me get my computer back on the right track. I live in a small town and the one computer place that took care of these types of things is now closed. I sincerely appreciate the time you volunteer here on this site.
Thanks again,
Ann
