Hello and welcome to Malware Removal, bsmallwood.

Before we do anything together, here is something you can do by yourself.
Read this, click the link, and follow the directions contained there: http://forum.malwareremoval.com/viewtopic.php?t=5852

When you post the HijackThis log, after following the instructions above, be sure to post all of the log. The header information is very important.

I'll be watching for your reply :)

I've gone through the scan offered by Noahdfear's Smitrem. Things seem to be running fine now. Here is the new data log taken from my computer using Hijackthis. What do you think? And thanks so very much for your help. The strain of this thing had been wearing on my relationship with my guy.

Hey, well done, bsmallwood :)
Let me check over your log, and come up with a fix for the CoolWebSearch infection that you have. It may take me a bit to formulate the instructions. They will be posted tonight.

I must apologize, bsmallwood, we had intermittent power outages up here.

I'll post this before it happens again

Read through all of this, ask questions before you begin. Print off the instructions as you won't have internet connection after you go into Safe Mode.

First of all I need you to download some programs for use later.

ftp://ftp.f-secure.com/anti-virus/tools/f-sdbot.exe
Save to your main drive eg C:\ in a folder you can find eg MY DOWNLOADS

Download this file and unzip it to your desktop

Download About:Buster from here. Once it is downloaded extract it to c:\aboutbuster and check for updates. Do NOT use it yet

Download CWShredder from here, install it, check for updates but again, don't use it yet.

I see you now have Ewido, installed. We will use it later on.

Please disconnect from the Internet and unplug your modem for the duration of this fix

You may want to print the rest of these instructions.

Reboot your computer into Safe Mode by tapping F8 while booting up and continue for the rest of the fix in SAFE MODE .

Click on Start >>>> Control Panel>>>> Add/Remove Programs.

Look for and uninstall each of these:
Logitech Desktop Messenger
180 Solutions
Sun Java

The Logitech Desktop Messenger tracks what you do so they can send you information.
It takes up space and frankly, provides no benefit to the user.

I am asking you to uninstall Sun Java as the version you currently have is outdated. Once clean, please reinstall Sun Java with the latest version.
The outdated versions have a flaw that allows infections to install on your computer.

You will be prompted to reboot after each removal. Choose NO.
When finished with the uninstalls, close Add/Remove Programs.

While still in Control Panel, double click on Folder Options.
Under the View tab scroll down to Hidden Files and Folders
Check Show hidden files and folders
Uncheck Hide extensions for known file types
Uncheck Hide protected operating system files (Recommended} Answer Yes
Click Apply and click OK
Close out of control Panel.

Remaining in Safe Mode, double click on the HSfix.reg file you downloaded at the beginning. Grant it permission to add the registry items.

Open CWShredder that you downloaded in the first step. Close all browser windows and click on the fix/next button.

Next, run HijackThis and click the scan button, when it has finished scanning put a check against the following if found:

R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = about:blank

Close HJT

Click on the 'Windows' key and the E key to bring up your Windows Explorer
Expland your C:drive by clicking on the + next to C:\
Look for and delete the following files (if present) and folders (if present)

C:\WINDOWS\mfcmy.exe
C:\solutions.exe
C:\Program Files\Logitech\Desktop Messenger
C:\Program Files\Java
C:\Program Files\180solutions

The following step is important as you may have several malware files in your temp directories.

Navigate to the C:\documents and settings\Your User Name (repeat for all other user names in documents and settings)\local settings\temp folder and delete all files and folders in it. Repeat deleting all contents of the Temporary Internet Files folder (for each user)
Then browse to the C:\Window\Prefetch folder and delete all files and folders in it. Do the same with the C:\Windows\Temp folder..delete the contents.

Now navigate to the C:\aboutbuster directory and double-click on AboutBuster.exe. Click Begin Removal to allow AboutBuster to scan. When it has finished, AboutBuster will open a 'Scan Completed' window. Click OK. Another information window will open. Click on Exit. AboutBuster will inform you that a log has been created. Click OK. I will need you to post that log later.

Run Ewido and do a full System Scan with it. Let it clean anything it finds. Save the report it creates.

Run the unpacked F-SdBot.exe file you downloaded and saved earlier to the C:\ drive
Run it by doubleclicking on the F-SdBot.exe file

First the F-SdBot utility will kill SdBot backdoor's processes in
memory. Then the utility will remove Registry entries created by
the backdoor. Finally the utility will scan all hard drives for
infected files and delete them.

Empty your recycle bin.

Reboot normally. Open HJT and scan again. Save and paste the new HijackThis log, the AboutBuster log and the Ewido log to this thread.
Let me know of any problems you had with the above directions.
I'll be watching for your logs. It may take more than one post to paste all of them.

Having difficulty connecting to download site

Unread postby bsmallwood » December 21st, 2005, 12:20 pm

Hi Piney,

Still more problems. I tried to connect to the first download site in your last post, but everytime I try, it fails, giving me that list of "did you type in the address correctly, try refresh, try later" message.

I then went to scan with AdAware again since my guy had been on the computer since I had finished the last procedure, checked for updates, then realized I didn't have the most recent edition of Adaware, so downloaded that, scanned with that and then tried to connect with the first download site, f-sdbot.exe, still failed. Can you help with that?

Thanks so much, bsmallwood

Not being able to connect to the download, may be from the bot worm you have.

Ignore that instruction, continue with the other downloads. We'll see what is left when you finish and run the HijackThis scan:)

It is really important, once you get the downloads done, that you get the computer offline until you have finished.

Good luck :)

I've done it all!!!

Unread postby bsmallwood » December 21st, 2005, 6:51 pm

I did all that you said, and when I was through, I went back and tried to download F-SdBot.exe and still no access. I'll attach the logs from aboutbuster and Ewido:

AboutBuster 5.1, reference file 32
Scan started on [12/21/2005] at [11:10:02 AM]
------------------------------------------------
No Ads Found!
------------------------------------------------
No Files Found!
------------------------------------------------
Scan was COMPLETED SUCCESSFULLY at 11:11:33 AM

Now I'm looking for the log from Ewido and I can't find it. I saw a file that said "Quarentine" with a bunch of files and I went in and deleted everything in it. Did I make a mistake? The report file in the Ewido file has nothing in it??? Sorry. I got interrupted in the middle of things and now I I've lost the report  What do you suggest? I'll keep looking, but my guy is vying for my attention too.

Thanks, thanks, thanks, bsmallwood

Hi, your computer has been seriously compromised. There are several trojans running that I can see and probably more. Your computer has probably been taken over to do things for hackers. If you are not using the computer, you need to physically disconnect it from the Internet. If you have a 2nd computer, then use it for any more Internet activity and keep the infected one offline. It's hard to say exactly what may have happened, but it could be serious or only a mild infection.

The first thing you want to do is to run hijackthis and check the following. You will be using safe mode that has no Internet connection, so copy and paste the part in the box and put it in a notepad file and save it to your desktop so you have a guide.
R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Windows Registry Scan] regscan32.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [MSNMSGR5] MSNMSGR5.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Microsoft DirectX] PDSched.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [Media Player] wmplayer.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [Microsoft DirectX] PDSched.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [Windows Registry Scan] regscan32.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [desktop] C:\WINDOWS\system32\desktop.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Autoupdate Service] C:\DOCUME~1\Owner\LOCALS~1\Temp\kaka.exe

O16 - DPF: {0F9B4CA4-A30F-480A-841D-69B45C50A8F8} (SekureL0gin.SekureKontrol) - http://secure2.comned.com/signuptemplat ... kurity.cab

After that, reboot your computer to safe mode by doing the following:
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode

Now that you are in safe mode (you'll know because it will say safe mode in the corners of the desktop), enable hidden files by doing this:

* Double-click My Computer.
* Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
* Click the View tab.
* Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
* Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
* Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
* Click Apply, and then click OK.

Then find and delete these files:

regscan32.exe
MSNMSGR5.exe
PDSched.exe
desktop.exe
kaka.exe

Note that you will need to search for these files and some may appear in more than one location. Do not delete any files I have not listed.

You have Norton installed on the computer, but I can't tell if you have the Norton firewall. If you do then find the icon in the system tray and:

- Click on Personal Firewall

- Click on Configure

- Select Program Control tab

- Deselect "Turn on Automatic Program Control"

- Under "Manual Program Control" highlight and Remove all entries (highlight the first entry, hold down the left shift key, scroll to the bottom, highlight the last entry to select all entries in the list; click Remove button to remove all)

When you get prompted for anything trying to get online, deny it unless it is obvious that it is needed, like Internet explorer. If you don't have the Norton firewall, then get a free one from here and Install Zone Alarm.

About Norton, I can see it in the running processes but according to hijackthis it is not set to run automatically. Are you manually starting it. If you don't know, many viruses attack the Norton program, then it is probably best to not use it and get a different antivirus, at least for now.

Please do the above and post back. Recovery can be done, but it will take time.

What Now, Boss?

Unread postby bsmallwood » December 22nd, 2005, 12:24 am

I have carried through with your instructions, except for the Norton part. My subscription is almost up, so I'm ready to try something else. What other program would you recommend? Before I found you guys, I bought WinAntiSpyWare 2005. I don't have it installed at the moment because my guy got real upset that it was set to check for all sorts of things when going through the internet.

I've been having trouble for many months with various things. If I may:
When the computer is turned on, there are programs that open automatically, without my having set it up that way. It's always been 9 copies of Explorer opening to a site about computer-shit. Also MS Messenger would open, but that has stopped, and the Explorer pages come up stacked and blank now.

There is this other problem of having this little box with an x in it, having to right click for pictures, something about ActiveX or something???? My guy likes to play pool through Yahoo, but the last time he went in, this afternoon, all he could get was the little box with the x in it.

I don't have another computer to use. When I searched for the files you listed in your last message, I only found one incident of regscan32.exe. There was nothing else. I used the MS search machine.

What else??? Mainly, at this point, I guess I need to know what computer protection to use.

Thanks again, bsmallwood

If you are going to get rid of Norton, then you can uninstall that and download the trial version of NOD32 here. You want the 2nd one listed, NOD32 for Windows NT/2000/2003/XP - Version 2.5. After it is installed, you should see that there is a new program installed when you click the start menu. Click the All Programs link in the start menu and select Eset. Then click the one that says only NOD32. A screen will come up with the the hard drives and disc drives. make sure that any that are listed as hard drives have a green check next to them. Then select "scan and clean" and let it work.

Next, download [url=http://www.download.com/3000-2092-10039884.html]Zone Alarm[/url and install that. Once it is installed, it will give alerts to programs trying to go online. For obvious things like Internet explorer, select the remember decision option and allow. For strange and unknown things, you should keep the remember option unchecked and deny it. If something doesn't work afterwards, yolu can allow it.

When it's done, Open hijackthis, but click the "open Misc Tools Section". Look for the "Open Uninstall Manager" and open it. Click the "save List" button and save the file to the desktop. Post the list in your next reply. Then run hijackthis to make a new log and post that in your next reply.

Hi again, looks like the CoolWebSearch infection isn't totally killed. It often takes several runs through the fix to kill it completely. You shopuld already have the tools from before, but if there is one you don't , I included the download link. I know you already have ewido, so just update it. You don't have to download the entire program again.

It is important to do the entire fix in safe mode, so read through it and print out the instructions. If you only do part of the fix, then it won't kill off the infection.

Download and Install CCleaner. After it is installed, save it until later in the fix.
Download this file and unzip it to your desktop

Download About:Buster from here. Once it is downloaded extract it to c:\aboutbuster and check for updates. Do NOT use it yet

Download CWShredder from here, install it, check for updates but again, don't use it yet.

Download and install Ewido Security Suite Trial from here. Run and update the program but do not scan with it yet.

Ensure hidden files and folders are set to show;
  • Click Start.
  • Open My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View Tab.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
  • Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Click OK.

At this point, you should have everything downloaded and updated.
Mkae sure you have printed out the instructions.

Please disconnect from the Internet and unplug your modem for the duration of this fix

Reboot your computer into Safe Mode by tapping F8 while booting up and continue for the rest of the fix in SAFE MODE

While in safe mode, double click on the HSfix.reg file you downloaded at the beginning. Grant it permission to add the registry items.

Then Open cwshredder that you downloaded in the first step. Close all browser windows and click on the fix/next button.

Now find and delete these files, if you can't find one then don't worry.. just move on to the next one.

C:\WINDOWS\system32\hszsq.dll
C:\WINDOWS\System32\gmooxh.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\sdkwq32.exe

C:\WINDOWS\system32\crbh32.exe
C:\WINDOWS\winlg.exe
C:\WINDOWS\mfcjt32.exe
C:\WINDOWS\mfcmy.exe
C:\solutions.exe

Now run hijackthis and click the scan button, when it has finished scanning put a check against the following and click 'fix checked'

The following step is important as you may have several malware files in your temp directories.

Open the ccleaner program you downloaded earlier and the cleaner button should be selected as well as the Windows tab. If not, select them so you see places where you can check these three items:
  • Internet Explorer
  • Windows Explorer
  • System
Then click the Applications tab and uncheck everything. Now click run cleaner and yes to the prompt that comes up. Once it is done, close the program.

Now reboot, Reboot back into Windows and visit [url=http://www.pandasoftware.com/products/activescan.htm]Panda ActiveScan. Look in the upper right hand corner for "Free use Active Scan" Click where it says "free online virus scan"
- Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button
- A new window will open...click the Check Now button
- Enter your Country
- Enter your State/Province
- Enter your e-mail address and click send
- Select either Home User or Company
- Click the big Scan Now button
- If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
- It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
- When download is complete, click on Local Disks to start the scan
- When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location.

Finally run hijackthis and post a new log along with the Panda scan report, about buster log and the Ewido log.
