Video Codec software scams + other issues

Unread postby KevinK » March 1st, 2009, 9:09 pm

Got a computer here with a few issues, some of which is over my head - so I am requesting a little assistance.

Getting desktop replacement with message "Warning! All media systems on your computer have been crashed! To resolve this issue and restore your system, update your media codec immediately."

The link to the codec software goes to WIncodecpro.com where I can purchase software to "fix" my issues.

I have seen two different popups directing me to go to "fix" my video codecs. I have no control over some of the properties, like settings of the monitor, etc. The browsers (IE and FireFox) were not working so good when I started looking at this, but mostly they are not shutting off now, although the computer is still major slow. Occasionally the monitor goes black and the desktop resizes by itself. Big red/white X lower left toolbar, hovering over it shows "ERROR" and is the source of the popup(s).

I have installed and run Avira AntiVir (AVG would not install), AdAware, Malwarebytes, Spybot, CCleaner. A lot of viruses, trojans, malwares have been removed but I still have the issues described above. I have not found enough help on google regarding this Video codec problem to figure out how to go about fixing it, so here I am asking for help.

HijackThis log posted below.

Thank you for any assistance.

Hello! :hello2: and welcome to the Malware Removal forums.
I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems. HijackThis logs can take a while to research so please be patient while I work on your log and I will post back here with any recommendations.

  • I will be working on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine.
  • Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • It's often worth reading through these instructions and printing them for ease of reference.
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to say or ask!! It's better to be sure and safe than sorry.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.

Step 1:
Please disable AdWatch, as it may hinder the removal of some entries. You can re-enable it after you're clean.
To disable AdWatch:
  • Open AdAware.
  • Go to AdWatch User Interface.
  • Go to Tools and Preferences.
  • At the bottom of the screen you will see 2 options Active and Automatic.
    • Active: This will turn Ad-Watch On\Off without closing it
    • Automatic: Suspicious activity will be blocked automatically
  • Uncheck both options. You can enable these after resolving your problem.
Don't forget to re-enable it, when your computer is clean.

Step 2:
We will begin with ComboFix.exe. Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running the tool:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

* Ensure you have disabled all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply for further review along with a new HijackThis log.

Thank you for your assistance.

FYI, the computer will not let me open either of the logs. This is probably "normal" for this infection, just thought you might like to know. . . I also cannot get into Task Manager, I hope I caught all of the processes I needed to stop. If not, I apologize.

With reference to Malware Removal's P2P Programs Policy, please uninstall the following programs before we continue:

  1. Click on Start > Control Panel and double click on Add/Remove Programs.
  2. Locate Azureus and click on the Change/Remove button to uninstall it.
  3. Repeat for any other P2P program.
  4. Close Add/Remove Programs and Control Panel when done.

  1. Open HijackThis.
  2. Click on the Open the Misc Tools section button.
  3. Look under System tools.
  4. Click on the Open Uninstall Manager... button.
  5. Click on the Save list... button.
  6. It will prompt you to save. Save this log in a convenient location. By default it's named uninstall_list.txt.
  7. Notepad will open. Please post this log in your next reply.

Step 1:
1. Close any open browsers.

2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

3. Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into it:

Folder::
c:\program files\MediaSystem
Registry::
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
"WmpTray"=-
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows nt\currentversion\image file execution options\taskmgr.exe]
[HKLM\~\services\sharedaccess\parameters\firewallpolicy\standardprofile\AuthorizedApplications\List]
"c:\\Program Files\\Azureus\\Azureus.exe"=-
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {4596013b-6c31-408b-a266-deae5c086dc2} -

Save this as "CFScript.txt", and as Type: All Files (*.*) in the same location as ComboFix.exe

Image

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe

When finished, it shall produce a log for you at C:\ComboFix.txt which I will require in your next reply.

Step 2:
Run Eset NOD32 Online AntiVirus
http://www.eset.eu/online-scanner
Note: You will need to use Internet Explorer for this scan.
  • Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use.
  • Click Start
  • When asked, allow the activex control to install
  • Disable your current Antivirus software. You can usually do this with its Notfication Tray icon near the clock.
  • Click Start
  • Make sure that the option "Remove found threats" is Un-checked, and the option "Scan unwanted applications" is checked
  • Click Scan
  • Wait for the scan to finish
  • Re-enable your Anvirisus software.
  • A logfile is created and located at C:\Program Files\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt. Please include this on your post.

Step 3:
Run HijackThis, do a system scan and post the following:
  • The ComboFix report
  • The NOD32 results
  • The new HijackThis log
Also let me know how your computer is running.

Computer running better. Desktop background and redX in taskbar gone. System Task Manager available, Display Properties available.

Not able to load Eset NOD32 Online Scanner. Once I accept the terms of use, I tried with the Active X Bar, then I opened up the IE security as much as I could find but, no matter what I did, once I choose to install the ActiveX control, all I get is a red-X in the upper left of the page where, apparently, some kind of a screen/image is supposed to display (where I could click START to begin the scan).

However, I did step 1 and step 3, logs below:

Re: Video Codec software scams + other issues

Unread postby Rodav » March 8th, 2009, 8:01 am

Don't worry about the ESET scan, but I would like to see another scanner just to make sure there are no leftovers. It does look like the active infection is gone.

Step 1:
Older versions of Java have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system.
Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components.
  • Close any programs you may have running, ESPECIALLY your web browser
  • Click Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs.
  • Check the following:
    • J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 5
    • Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment 6 Update 1
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove all installed versions of Java.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
Then download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment(JRE) and install it to your computer.

Step 2:
  • Run HijackThis
  • Click on the Scan button
  • Put a check beside all of the items listed below (if present), the lines in green allow scripts to run freely from the sites mentioned, while they are both legitimate sites it offers no benefit of them being in your trusted zone so I recommend you remove them:

    R3 - URLSearchHook: &Yahoo! Toolbar - {EF99BD32-C1FB-11D2-892F-0090271D4F88} - (no file)
    O2 - BHO: WormRadar.com IESiteBlocker.NavFilter - {3CA2F312-6F6E-4B53-A66E-4E65E497C8C0} - C:\Program Files\AVG\AVG8\avgssie.dll (file missing)
    O2 - BHO: AVG Security Toolbar - {A057A204-BACC-4D26-9990-79A187E2698E} - C:\PROGRA~1\AVG\AVG8\AVGTOO~1.DLL (file missing)
    O3 - Toolbar: AVG Security Toolbar - {A057A204-BACC-4D26-9990-79A187E2698E} - C:\PROGRA~1\AVG\AVG8\AVGTOO~1.DLL (file missing)
    O15 - Trusted Zone: http://www.eset.eu
    O15 - Trusted Zone: http://*.trymedia.com (HKLM)

  • Close all open windows and browsers/email, etc...
  • Click on the "Fix Checked" button
  • When completed, close the application and Restart your computer.

Step 3:
Note: Internet Explorer should be used.

Please go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.
  • Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  • It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
  • When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
  • Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
    • Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
    • Archives
    • Mail databases
  • Click on My Computer under Scan and then put the kettle on!
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
  • You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
  • Save this report to a convenient place like your Desktop. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
  • Copy and paste the report into your next reply along with a new HijackThis log and a description of how your PC is behaving.

Computer is now acting quite good. It is a little sluggish, but I put that down to 1) not enough memory (or at least as much as I am used to) and 2) I still have to defrag the disk, which is in bad shape (all red on the analyze step).

Had a little problem installing Kaspersly also, but it finally installed w/o the "invalid signature" after I ran CCleaner and kept trying to reinstall it.

This is a good tutorial to read with some tips that may help speed up your computer: http://www.malwareremoval.com/tutorials ... slowly.php

All looks good now, you can remove the file kaspersky found
C:\Documents and Settings\HP_Administrator\Shared\times of your life seinfeld Share Accelerator.zip if you need to show hidden files to remove it here is a guide: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutoria ... html#winxp

Step 1:
Click on Start > Run. Copy and paste in ComboFix /u and click OK. An image is below for reference.

Your logs are now clean. :D :D
If you still feel you are having any issues please let me know now, otherwise read through the following:

Please take the time to tell us what you would like to be done about the people who are behind all the problems you have had. We can only get something done about this if the people that we help, like you, are prepared to complain. We have a dedicated forum for collecting these complaints Malware Complaints, you need to be registered to post as unfortunately we were hit with too many spam posting to allow guest posting to continue just find your country room and register your complaint.

Below are some steps to follow in order to dramatically lower the chances of reinfection
You may have already implemented some of the steps below, however you can follow any steps that you have not already implemented
  • Make sure you install all the security updates for Windows, Internet explorer & Microsoft Office
Whenever a security problem in its software is found, Microsoft will usually create a patch for it to that after the patch is installed, attackers can't use the vulnerability to install malicious software on your PC, so keeping up with these patches will help to prevent malicious software being installed on your PC
Go here to check for & install updates to Microsoft applications
Note: The update process uses activex, so you will need to use internet explorer for it, and allow the activex control that it wants to install
  • Keep your non-Microsoft applications updated as well
Microsoft isn't the only company whose products can contain security vulnerabilities, to check for other vulnerable programs running on your PC that are in need of an update, you can use the Secunia Software Inspector - I suggest that you run it at least once a month
  • Make Internet Explorer more secure
    Click Start > Run
    Type Inetcpl.cpl & click OK
    Click on the Security tab
Click Reset all zones to default level
Make sure the Internet Zone is selected & Click Custom level
In the ActiveX section, set the first two options ("Download signed and unsigned ActiveX controls) to "Prompt", and ("Initialize and Script ActiveX controls not marked as safe") to "Disable".
Next Click OK, then Apply button and then OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
  • Install a Hosts File
    I recommend MVPS Hosts File
Every version of windows includes a hosts file as part of them. A hosts file is a bit like a phone book, it points to the actual numeric address (i.e. the IP address) from the human friendly name of a website. This feature can be used to block malicious websites
On some PCs, having a custom HOSTS file installed can cause a significant slowdown. Following these instructions should resolve the issue
    • Click Start > Run
    • Type services.msc & click OK
    • In the list, find the service called DNS Client & double click on it.
    • On the dropdown box, change the setting from automatic to manual.
    • Click OK & then close the Services window
For a more detailed explanation of the HOSTS file, click here
  • Download and install the free version of WinPatrol. This program protects your computer in a variety of ways and will work well with your existing security software. Have a look at this tutorial to help you get started with the program. If you want to help the developer of the program and get more information about what the programs that you see in Winpatrol please check out Winpatrol Plus. It does not need a new download.
  • The last and most important thing I can tell you is UPDATE, UPDATE, UPDATE.
If you don't update your security programs (Antivirus, Antispyware, even Windows) then you are at risk.
Malware changes on a day to day basis. You should update every week at the very least.

Miekiemoes an expert in malware removal has a fantastic article on how to prevent Malware for further tips, it's well worth a read. http://users.telenet.be/bluepatchy/miek ... ntion.html

Please reply to this topic one more time so I know you have read through it or with any questions you may have.

Thank you VERY much for your assistance. I am usually able to fix these problems, albiet probably not as completely as needed, but this computer was over my head.

I will go through the recommendations on the bottom of your previous post as I clean up the machine and change to AVG antivirus, etc. I have defragged the disk and the computer is noticeably faster now, but I will still look at the link you provided, thanks!

Cheers!
