Extremely Infected Windows XP SP3 computer

Unread postby ciphyre » March 4th, 2009, 1:16 pm

I have been having issues recently that I can only assume indicate some form of infection. I have noticed several iexplorer.exe processes running on the box though I use firefox, I can use a cmd prompt but it seems to break after a short period of time, I ran a ping -t last night and it failed sometime after I left it running, when I tried to run cmd.exe it failed and I got an error code and on occasion taskmgr won't work. I have also noticed that clients that use TCP/IP are not able to get out to the network though my network connection is working fine, and example is Outlook, when it first starts it can connect to the POP server and retrieve emails but about 10 minutes later the connections start to time out though I can ping the POP server manually. Rebooting clears these issue up for a short time and then is starts all over again. Then starting today my computer is shutting itself down and rebooting, all the applications start to gracefully exit and then the computer reboots. I am only able to cancel it if I am running something like firefox that prompts me before it shuts down to save the tabs.

Not sure what the infections are, can someone help? Thanks!!

Hello ciphyre and welcome to the forums.

Please do not run any other programs with out my permission !!
Run all programs in the order posted !!!!!

My name is flashh4 and I will be helping you to remove any infection(s) that you may have.

Please observe these rules while we work:

1. If you don't know, stop and ask! Don't keep going on.
2. Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
3. Please continue to respond until I give you the "All Clear"
(Just because you can't see a problem doesn't mean it isn't there)
4. Please note you'll need to have Administrator privileges to perform the fixes. (XP accounts are Administrator by default)
5. Please let me know if you are using a computer with multiple accounts, as this can affect the instructions given.
6. Please post all request .......... not as a Attachment.

If you can do those things, everything should go smoothly.

Please note that all instructions given are customised for this computer only, the tools used may cause damage if used on a computer with different infections.

If you think you have similar problems, please post a log in the HJT forum and wait for help.

Note: I am still in training at Malware Removal, however I will be working under the direct supervision of one of our Malware Experts. Any recommendations will first be approved before being given to you. Because of this, there may be a short delay in getting our responses to you, however be assured that we will be working diligently on your problem.

I will be back as soon as possible with a fix !!
In the mean time can you give me an Uninstall list please !!

  1. Open HijackThis.
  2. Click on the Open the Misc Tools section button.
  3. Look under System tools.
  4. Click on the Open Uninstall Manager... button.
  5. Click on the Save list... button.
  6. It will prompt you to save. Save this log in a convenient location. By default it's named uninstall_list.txt.
  7. Notepad will open. Please post this log in your next reply.

*Notes*
1. It would be very helpful if you informed me of which Antivirus and Firewall you are running or if it's disabled.
2. There is a 5 day limit which you must respond to this topic or it will be closed. Then you will have to start a new topic.

Thanks
Chuck

Thank you for helping me out, this has been very frustrating.

Anyway to answer your question, I am using AVG for anti virus protection. I use a router as my firewall in conjunction with NAT/PAT so I do not have a software firewall installed on my PC.

Here is the output of the uninstall log file you requested:

Re: Extremely Infected Windows XP SP3 computer

Unread postby flashh4 » March 8th, 2009, 6:02 pm

Hi ciphyre, i have some of the worst news that us Malware fighters must inform our users of.
Your computer has a Virut infection, which is one of the nastiest infections on the net.
Here is some info on this infection:
1. It will infect your files, then it attaches itself to and corrupts exe files, including your vital system files.
2. Our scanners and tools cannot properly disinfect your courpted files.
3. Most of the infected files will be in your systems most important files, which cannot be removed.[/color]

So as you can see your only option to have a trusted and clean machine again is to reformat and reinstall the Windows operating system. This is not as bad as it seems to make your computer trust able and safe again.

My suggestion to you is. Save your documents and pictures and reformat your computer back to its original state. Do not save any other files !
If i may be of any other help please let me know.

Thanks and Good luck.

Due to a lack of activity, this topic is now closed.

If you still require help, please open a new thread in the Infected? Virus, malware, adware, ransomware, oh my! forum, include a fresh FRST log, and wait for a new helper.
