backdoor trojan and re-install

Unread postby SBdaKiller » February 27th, 2009, 5:11 pm

Hello –

I am taking the advice given by you below – I will re-install the XPpro.

My question is: After I do that, how can I safely import some files from either of the hard drives or flash drives that were on this computer at the time of the infection ?

Thank you so much,

SBdaKiller
========================

Hi SBdaKiller

One or more of the identified infections is a backdoor trojan.

This allows hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and Download and Execute files

I would counsel you to disconnect this PC from the Internet immediately. If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.

Though the Trojan has been identified and can be killed, because of it's backdoor functionality, your PC is very likely compromised and there is no way to be sure your computer can ever again be trusted. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of Trojan, the best course of action would be a reformat and reinstall of the OS. Please read these for more information:

How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud?

When Should I Format, How Should I Reinstall

We can attempt to clean this machine but I can't guarantee that it will be 100% secure afterwards.

Should you have any questions, please feel free to ask.

Please let us know what you have decided to do in your next post.

Hello I have a virus of some nasty sort.

The machine has xp pro, sp3.

My system restore points are gone.
My computer will not connect to the internet.
I am writing this on another machine.
The machine shuts down after about 20 minutes.
AVG does not fix the problem.
The my docs folder keeps opening.
I am urged to scan my computer by something called real-av.org.
My desktop background image is flashing "WARNING" in red.

Thanks for your help . . .

Re: backdoor trojan and re-install

Well - the stupid thing is: you can't.

But this will make everything as safe as possible:

1) Don't backup .exe, .scr, .js, or other executable files. Dump everything else you need on a known clean flash drive/USB hard disk

2) Connect your flash drive to a clean computer. Then download and run Flash_Disinfector (a tool which disables any autorun virus; instructions below)

Flash_Disinfector
Download Flash_Disinfector by sUBs.
  • Disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus/antimalware programs. That ensures they won't interfere.
  • Run Flash_Disinfector. When asked, plug in all your flash drives
  • Your desktop will disappear as the program starts cleaning the flash drives.
  • When done, a message box will appear. Click OK
  • If your desktop does not come up, press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to bring up Task Manager. Click File > New task (Run...) and enter:
    Code: Select all
    explorer
  • Then click OK and your desktop will appear.

3) Scan the flash drive with Kaspersky Online Scan

4) Reformat the infected computer and reinstall windows

5) Restore your files, install your programmes, etc. and then post a new HijackThis log in a new thread.

I have not done this yet . . . . . if all agree this is the way to go, that is what I will do.

So yes, let's close this topic. . . . . . this new avatar is too scary!

Thank you for the help.

Apologize for the avatar, was meant to be a (lame) joke. (someone jokingly advised me it should be more scary)

I will request the topic to be closed.
