Windows will not boot, except in safe mode

Unread postby maxcc1519 » February 20th, 2009, 9:52 am

I restarted my computer in safe mode to run SpyBot to see if anything came up, after having run it in normal mode (a fairly computer literate friend said that is a good practice, but not sure if it makes a difference). I went back into msconfig restart in normal mode and the computer would not reboot. The windows xp (with the satus bar) came up as normal and then nothing loads after that. The screen remains black. I reset the computer and used setup to enter safe mode with and without networking without difficulty. I used system restore to first go back one day and then one week, both without success. I read on your posts that i needed to remove any P2P software, so Limewire is gone. I cannot run norton 360 in safe mode, but i was able to download and run norton system security. NSS did not find any issues. Oh, I also connect through a router to the internet. The computer has been running slow lately, and also does not seem to load Norton 360 everytime it boots. I do not now what else to do, so here is my log.

Re: Windows will not boot, except in safe mode

Unread postby NonSuch » March 4th, 2009, 1:32 am

It is never a good practice to use MSCONFIG to get into or out of safe mode. It's not a safe method. If things aren't exactly right with a system, serious problems are often the end result. Also, never take a system online while it is in safe mode with networking as you will be online without your anti-virus protection and that is extremely risky.

Unfortunately, your HijackThis log reveals nothing. This is to be expected as many forms of malware do not load in safe mode, so would not show up even if present on your system.

To get your system back into normal mode, you can try a repair install, which will leave your data in place. However, if you feel your system is infected, then your best option would be to back up your data and do a clean install of the operating system.

See information here:

Repair Install... http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315341 http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm

Clean Install... http://www.winsupersite.com/showcase/wi ... _clean.asp

If you are not comfortable performing either of these options, then you should take your system to a trusted local computer repair shop and have them back up your data, reformat your hard drive, and reinstall your operating system for you.
