Goodday

I have a spyware problem on my computer and do not want to make an error in removal. I have never had to do this before so I would appreciate some info & help. Also have a problem with pop-ups from Spyware Protect 2009, I have copied and pasted my log with a file highlighted, could this be my culprit and could there be more.

Thank You
Will await a reply
Regards

Please note that all instructions given are customised for this computer only, the tools used may cause damage if used on a computer with different infections.

If you think you have similar problems, please post a log in the HJT forum and wait for help.

Hi anvosm and welcome to Malware Removal :)

I'm Dakeyras and I am going to try to assist you with your problem. Please take note of the below:

  • I will start working on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine!.
  • The process is not instant. Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine is clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • If you don't know, stop and ask! Don't keep going on.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
  • Refrain from running self fixes as this will hinder the malware removal process.
  • It may prove beneficial if you print of the following instructions or save them to notepad as I post them.
  • Your security programs may give warnings for some of the tools I will ask you to use. Be assured, any links I give are safe.

Next:

with a file highlighted, could this be my culprit and could there be more.
Yes it is along with other infections I have identified so far.

Next:

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

Alternate download link.

  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please post that log in your next reply.
The log can also be found here:
  1. Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  2. Click on the Logs radio tab.

Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process, if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

Next:

  • Please download Random's System Information Tool by random/random from here and save it to your desktop.
Please make sure that RSIT.exe is on the your Desktop before running the application.
  • Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • Once it has finished, two logs will open:
    • log.txt will be opened maximized.
    • info.txt will be opened minimized.
  • Please post the contents of both log.txt and info.txt.

When completed the above, please post back the following in the order asked for:

  • Any problems encountered ?
  • Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Log.
  • Both RSIT Logs.

Hi Dakeyras
Thank you for your response to my problem, since my first email my son-in-law stopped by and ran the Hijack This program and deleted a few problem files. This stopped my pop-up problem,.
I received your response and then last night ran the Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware on my computer and a few more problem files were detected. As of now I seem to have a problem with my browser, example: if I google something and click the link I am forwarded somewhere else, a few times last evening my Internet Explorer just closed down.
I have posted all my logs below as you had requested. I also find that my computer runs a little slow. Thank you for your help and I will await your reply.

PS. I cannot find RSIT.exe on my desktop, is this a problem ?

Re: Spyware SillyBHO CJ .. Win32/SillyBHO.CJ [CA AV]

Unread postby Dakeyras » March 6th, 2009, 6:04 am

Hi,

I have bad news I'm afraid :(

Two or more of the identified infections are a Backdoor Trojan.

OK since we are dealing with the aforementioned infection(s) I would be providing your good self with a disservice if I did not make you aware of the ramifications below:

This allows hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and Download and Execute files.

I would counsel you to disconnect this PC from the Internet immediately. If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.

Although an attempt could be made to clean this machine, it could never be considered to be truly clean, secure, or trustworthy. We could not say definitively that unknown and unseen malware will have been removed, nor will your system be restored to its pre-infection state. We cannot remedy unknown changes the malware may likely have made in order to allow itself access, nor can we repair the damage it may possibly have caused to vital system files. Additionally, it is quite possible that changes made to the system by the malware may impact negatively on your computer during the removal process. In short, your system may never regain its former stability or its full functionality without a reformat. Therefore, your best and safest course of action is a reformat and reinstallation of the Windows operating system, and that is the course we strongly recommend.

Please read these for more information:

How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud?

When Should I Format, How Should I Reinstall

I can attempt to clean this machine but I can't guarantee that it will be at all secure afterwords.

Should you have any questions, please feel free to ask.

Please let myself know what you have decided to do in your next post.

Hi, Thank you so much for your help regarding my computer problems. I am upset about the results of my scan and have been thinking about my possibilities. Reformatting & reinstalling my operating system seems like a chore, I guess I will have to have someone do it for me. Is there any way to remove the infections from my system without doing the reistallation ? How did I get this on my computer, I thought that I was careful about this. Thank you again.

Hi :)

Hi, Thank you so much for your help regarding my computer problems. I am upset about the results of my scan and have been thinking about my possibilities.
You're welcome! I perfectly understand how your good self feels.

Reformatting & reinstalling my operating system seems like a chore, I guess I will have to have someone do it for me.
It can be thought of like that if unexpected I agree. If you are not confidant to carry out the task my advice would be to ask someone who is and or take it to your local IT repair store.

Is there any way to remove the infections from my system without doing the reistallation ?
Did you actually read this post in full at all ?

How did I get this on my computer, I thought that I was careful about this.
One possibility is your Adobe Reader 7.0.8 is a out of date version and this may have been exploited by malware and used as a back-door. Rule of thumb is keep all installed applications up-to date and periodically check for any updates. This also includes the Operating System. Plus having active the real time protection of two Anti-Spyware applications actually lessens online protection, as this causes both a program/system conflict between the two. These are just a few viable possibility's.

I thought that I was careful about this. Thank you again.
Your good self may well have been and some of the possibility's I mentioned in the last paragraph could be the cause. Surfing online most unfortunately is a far from safe activity these days. Unless you are really both on your guard and have a up-to date software, a fully patched Operating System etc etc as so much can be exploited by those nefarious malware creators.

Now I please want you to read this explaining exactly about what infection invaded your computer:
Troj/Ezibot-B is a Trojan for the Windows platform.

The Trojan allows a remote user to access the infected computer and performs actions including stealing personal information, keylogging, shutting down the computer, and downloading and executing remote files.

Plus this I posted in a prior post:
I can attempt to clean this machine but I can't guarantee that it will be at all secure afterwords.

Should you have any questions, please feel free to ask.

Please let myself know what you have decided to do in your next post.

I have advised you as I deem appropriate and await your reply, thank you.

Hi Dakeyras

Thank you again for responding, yes I did read the full post and realized my question after I sent it. I guess my mind was wandering considering my dilemma. I would like to try clean my computer and see where that will lead us.

Do I need to remove an Anti Spyware and which one ?

Will wait to hear from you

Kind regards

You're welcome! OK I will respect your decision for a attempted malware removal. Please remember I can't guarantee that your computer will be at all secure afterwords ;)

Do I need to remove an Anti Spyware and which one ?
We will address this now, since you bundled eTrust Internet Security Suite application has a active Anti-Spyware component. I propose we uninstall Windows Defender(the active guard is active) which is not a particularly effective application and keep Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware as a on-demand scanner only.

Also I will provide some optional removals also which will be highlighted in red, as these applications are not necessary if not used and in some instances two of them listed are known system resource intensive applications.(both iTunes & QuickTime)

Random Access Memory:

Total RAM: 510 MB (43% free)
Some friendly advice concerning the above. It would be prudent in the future to consider installing some new upgraded memory modules.

Though Microsoft claims XP will run with a mere 128 MB installed in my humble opinion a minimum of 1 GB is far better.

If you wish to upgrade the installed memory, Crucial have a Active X scanner which is perfectly safe and will advise if your system can support any upgraded memory modules. They cater for the US/UK and Europe.

Next:

Now please go to Start >> Control Panel >> Add/Remove Programs and remove the following (if present):

iTunes
PC Pitstop Optimize 1.5
PC Pitstop Optimize 2 2.0
QuickTime

Windows Defender

Note: Take extra care in answering questions posed by any Uninstaller. Some questions may be worded to deceive you into keeping the program.

eTrust Internet Security Suite:

From the last scan I asked your good self to carry out the below was revealed:

======Security center information======

AV: CA Anti-Virus (outdated)
I advise you check for any updates and if found, install them. Also do you still have a active subscription for this ? If not we will need to uninstall this and replace as otherwise using a out of date application that is unable to be updated is most definitely a online security risk!

Next:

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2
Link 3

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools

Right click on CA Antivirus icon near the clock (a shield).
Click on CA Anti-Virus > Snooze Anti-Virus Protection.
When prompted, enter in 30 and click on Snooze.
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Image

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Note: Do not forget to re-enable your Anti-Virus application after running the above scan!

When completed the above, please post back the following in the order asked for:

  • Any problems encountered and or further symptoms ?
  • Answer to my question concerning your security application subscription.
  • ComboFix Log.
  • A new HijackThis Log.

Hi

I have followed your instructions but I am having a problem:

First I removed the programs:

iTunes
PC Pitstop Optimize 1.5
PC Pitstop Optimize 2 2.0
QuickTime
Windows Defender

Next:

I downloaded Combo Fix frm Bleeping Computer and saved it to my desktop

Next:
Put antivirus on Snooze

then double clicked Combo fix, a small window opened and this was the message

"
Please wait: Combo FIx is preparing to Run"

I have waited and nothing is happening, no scan, no more info, no log
Have I done something wrong, please advise.
thanks again

Hi Anne :)

I assure you, you have nothing wrong. In-fact you have taken the correct measure and informed me. Which I both appreciate and applaud

OK lets try renaming ComboFix.exe as follows:

  • Right click on ComboFix.exe and select rename
  • Rename it Dakeyras and hit the enter/return key.

Now try to run Combofix again per my instructions.

Hi, me again,

I did what you suggested but it would not accept the rename, I had to add a number which I did:
Dakeyras1

next I tried again, double click combofix, same thing.... waited nothing happens.

I did notice that the properties of combo fix said " read only" does this make a difference ?

What do I know...very confusing.

Anyway I will wait to hear from you again.

Bye for now
