Windowsclick malware infection

Unread postby rckimmo » February 27th, 2009, 1:34 pm

Kim here.

I have a desktop and a laptop. The laptop is infected with malware.

When I do Google searches, I have random problems with something called "windowsclick." It doesn't happen every time, but I am often redirected to another site--some sort of link farm or other search site, it appears. I can see the word "windowsclick" in the browser window before it redirects.

I'm not sure when I first noticed it, but it's been several days and possibly longer. It doesn't redirect every time, so I didn't pay much attention at first.

I'm glad I have my desktop, because my laptop's browser won't accept your website's URL. Probably related to the malware issue. I couldn't confirm my registration from my laptop. As a matter of fact, I can't pull up your site on the laptop at all. I had to email the HJT log from one computer to the other in order to post it here.

AVG also quarantined a Trojan Horse SHeur a few days ago, and I have no clue how to get rid of any of either. I'm all thumbs when it comes to this techie stuff.

Anyway, here's my HJT log. Thanks in advance for your help!

welcome to malwareremoval forums

My name is Dan, and I will be helping you to remove any infection(s) that you may have.

Please note! that all instructions given are customised for this computer only, the tools used may cause damage if used on a computer with different infections.

Please observe these rules while we work:
  • Perform all actions in the order given.
  • If you don't know, stop and ask! Don't keep going on.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
  • Stick with it till you're given the all clear.
  • REMEMBER, ABSENCE OF SYMPTOMS DOES NOT MEAN THE INFECTION IS ALL GONE.
If you can do these things, everything should go smoothly.
  • Please note you'll need to have Administrator priviledges to perform the fixes. (XP accounts are Administrator by default)
  • Please let me know if you are using a computer with multiple accounts, as this can affect the instructions given.

Unless informed of in advance, failure to post replies within 5 days will result in this thread being closed.

It may be helpful to you to print out or take a copy of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

Installed Programs

Please could you give me a list of the programs that are installed.
  • Start HijackThis
  • Click on the Misc Tools button
  • Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.
You will see a list with the programs installed in your computer.
Click on save list button and specify where you would like to save this file.
When you press Save button a notepad will open with the contents of that file.
Simply copy and paste the contents of that notepad into your next post.

I'm presently looking over your log and hope not to be too long.
Will be back with you as soon as I can.
Thanks dan

Thanks, Dan. I have to copy from my laptop and email it to my desktop, so it's kind of a pain. Glad I have both!

Here's the uninstall list. I'm not sure why it shows Norton 360, as we uninstalled that awhile ago and replaced it with AVG.

Download DDS and save it to your desktop from here or here or here.
Disable any script blocker, and then double click dds.scr to run the tool.
  • When done, DDS will open two (2) logs:
    1. DDS.txt
    2. Attach.txt
  • Save both reports to your desktop.

Please download gmer.zip from Gmer and save it to your desktop.

  1. Right click on gmer.zip and select Extract All....
  2. Click Next on seeing the Welcome to the Compressed (zipped) Folders Extraction Wizard.
  3. Click on the Browse button. Click on Desktop. Then click OK.
  4. Click Next. It will start extracting.
  5. Once done, check (tick) the Show extracted files box and click Finish.

Double click on gmer.exe to run it. It will start running a scan. If it detects rootkit activity, you will receive a prompt to run a full scan. Click Yes.

  • When done, you may receive another notice. Click OK.
  • Click on Save ... to save a log.
  • Copy and paste in Gmer.txt and click Save.
  • Close Gmer.

If you receive no notice, click on the Scan button.

  • It will start scanning again.
  • When done, click on Save ... to save a log.
  • Copy and paste in Gmer.txt and click Save.
  • Close Gmer.

Note: Do not run any programs while Gmer is running.

In your next reply, please post:

  • DDS.txt
  • Attach.txt
  • Gmer.txt

Thanks dan.

Dan, I have pasted the DDS.txt and Attach.txt files below. However, gmer didn't seem to respond. I clicked "Run" and a hourglass appeared for a second, but then nothing happened.

Please advise.

Sorry, Dan. I tried running gmer again, but the hourglass just appears for about 10 seconds and the nothing happens. I tried waiting a few minutes thinking maybe something was running in the background, but no results popped up. I have always closed all windows when doing this.

Hi ,Kim, not to worry your doing fine :)

Download and run Combofix
This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.
ComboFix SHOULD NOT be used unless requested by a forum helper

Please download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2
Link 3

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Image
Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.
When finished, it will produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log.

If you need help, see this link:

Post back:
Combofix report.
A new HijackThis log.

Re: Windowsclick malware infection

Dan,

I can't directly save anything to "my desktop" on the infected laptop. The malware won't allow me to access ANY anti-spyware, anti-virus, or anti-malware sites at all on the laptop.

What I've been doing thus far is using my desktop computer to communicate with you and also to save applications to my shared network (which I then open on the laptop). So far this has worked for everything except gmer.

Your instructions very clearly say: * IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

So I'm leery of saving ComboFix.exe in my shared files (network).

Just know that I cannot open ANYTHING on my laptop from the Internet. The only way I can access files is through the shared network OR through emails.

Please advise.

I saved it to my flash drive, put the flash drive into the laptop, and tried running ComboFix. Again, I just got a 10-second hourglass and then...nothing happened.

I have no idea what to do differently.

By the way, I disabled Windows Firewall and the AVG Resident Shield before attempting to run ComboFix. I don't think I have any other antivirus/anti-spyware software running on my computer.

I need to go to bed--it's midnight here. Hope you have a new solution for me in the morning. Thanks for hanging with me. I'm starting to feel hopeless.

Hope you had a good rest!
Read post fully then start the steps outlined.

Ok, let's see if we can get this laptop up and running!
The version of combofix you have on the laptop follow this to delete.

Click Start > Run and copy/paste the following bolded text into the Run box and click OK:

ComboFix /u

------------------

Download Combofix to your desktop from any of the links below. You must rename it before saving it. Save it to your desktop.

Link 2

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Double click on Combo-Fix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.
  • Please post the C:\ComboFix.txt along with a HijackThis log so we can continue cleaning the system.

Again you can now transfer it across to infected laptop.

Download malwarebytes and save to your main pc desktop, rename it upon installation,to say "mbam1" without quotes(just the folder before saving it) no need to update it, but if you can do it before transferring it, it's better.

-------------------------

Step one
Once "mbam1" is transfered over to infected laptop via usb leave the usb stick in the laptop pc whilst the combofix scan is going, don't place it back in your desktop untill we have cleaned the laptop.

step two
I want you to run "malwarebytes" ( mbam1 )first and don't forget to click fix selected items when scan has finished.

Step three
Run combofix for me which will be "Combo-Fix.exe"

Post logs for me.
Any problem let me know
