That’s fine that will be cleaned up when we remove the Combofix backup files.

Norton Password manager is broken (and I no longer have the original CD to re-install it from)

We will clean the remnants. If you feel you would like it back, Norton Password manager can be downloaded as a stand alone product.

Ran ATF-Cleaner

ATF cleaner is a handy program to keep. It can be used whenever you choose. Just remember to uncheck cookies if you do not want to keep entering passwords into sites you visit regularly.

To remove Norton Password Manager

Go to Start-Settings-Control Panel, click on Add remove Programs. If any of the following programs are listed there, click on the program to highlight it, and click on remove. Then close the Control Panel.

The computer boots faster and seems less prone to stalling

There are still several programs that start up when the computer boots that do not need to run on startup . Disabling these from start up will help boot times. If you would like to stop these programs loading unnecessarily we can do this via HJT. Fixing the 04 entries in HJT WILL NOT remove the program or their functionality it will ONLY stop it loading at startup. The choice is yours alone to make, have a look through the list, if there is something you would like to keep for start up then DO NOT PLACE A CHECK MARK BESIDE IT (The 016 entry in the list IS to be checked)

Please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:


Firewall
As the term conveys, a firewall is an extra layer of security installed onto computers, which restricts access to systems from the outside world. Firewalls protect against hackers and malicious intruders. and I highly recommend you have one running at all times.

If you are using the built-in Windows XP firewall, it is not recommended as it does not block outgoing connections. This means that any malware on your computer is free to "phone home" for more instructions. Simply put, Windows XP contains a mediocre firewall. This firewall is NO replacement for a dedicated software solution. Remember to use only one firewall at the same time.


Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:

• From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
• Click once on the Security tab
• Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
• Click once on the Custom Level button.
  
  • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
  • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
  • Change the Initialise and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
  • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
  • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
  • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
  • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
  • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.

Here are some free programs I recommend that could help you improve your computer's security.

Update your Antivirus programs and other security products regularly to avoid new threats that could infect your system. If you do not update your anti virus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer.
