Hello and welcome to the Malware Removal Forums

I will be assisting you with your Malware issues.

IMPORTANT

  • Continue to respond to this thread until I give you the All Clean!
  • If you have any questions or are unsure in anyway, please let me know. I will try my best to help you!
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.

Make an uninstall list using HijackThis
To access the Uninstall Manager you would do the following:
  • Start HijackThis
  • Click on the Config button
  • Click on the Misc Tools button
  • Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.
  • Click on the Save list... button and specify where you would like to save this file. When you press Save button a notepad will open with the contents of that file. Save the file to your desktop.

Please post this log on your next reply.

Dear Muppy03,

Thanks for offering your time and advice.

I was able to make an uninstall list with Hijackthis, run a system scan only with selections through Hijackthis, download and run ATF Cleaner, and download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware.

Unfortunately, I was unable to run a Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware full system scan. Windows crashed during the process. Thus, I can not post a MBAM Log at this moment.

Hi Thomas,

Lets try something else instead.

Download and Run: RSIT

  • Download random's system information tool (RSIT) by random/random from here and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • Once it has finished, two logs will open. Please post the contents of both log.txt (<<will be maximized) and info.txt (<<will be minimized)

NEXT

GMER

  • Download GMER by GMER from one of the links below:
    Link1
    Link2
  • Unzip it to a folder on your desktop
  • Double click on gmer.exe to launch GMER
  • If asked, allow the gmer.sys driver load
  • If it warns you about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run scan, click OK
  • If you don't get a warning then

    • Click the rootkit tab
    • Click Scan
  • Once the scan has finished, click copy
  • Paste the log into notepad using Ctrl+V
  • Save it to your desktop as gmerrk.txt
  • Click on the >>> tab
  • This will open up the rest of the tabs for you
  • Click on the Autostart tab
  • Click on Scan
  • Once the scan has finished, click copy
  • Paste the log into notepad using Ctrl+V
  • Save it to your desktop as gmerautos.txt
  • Copy and paste the contents of gmerautos.txt and gmerrk.txt as a reply to this topic

Please reply with:-

  • RSIT logs (info.txt and log.txt)
  • 2 GMER logs

Dear Muppy03,

Thanks for the help. I was able to re-download Mozilla Firefox, update Symantec anti-virus, and re-install and run Malwarebytes.

Unfortunately, Firefox has crashed several times in past day.

Also, I opened up the CPU case and blew out any dust with compressed air from the fans.

Aside, I was able to run all of the scans you advised. The results are provided as follows:

RSIT log 3/6/09:

Logfile of random's system information tool 1.05 (written by random/random)

Hi Tom,

MRU P2P Policy
IMPORTANT I notice there are signs of one or more P2P (Peer to Peer) File Sharing Programs on your computer.

Frostwire
Utorrent

I'd like you to read the MRU policy for P2P Programs.
Go to Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and uninstall the programs listed above (in red).
Run a new HJT scan when finished and post the log back here.

Check Hard Disk For Errors

Press Start->Run, then copy/paste the following command into the box and press OK:
cmd /c chkdsk c: |find /v "percent" >> "%userprofile%\desktop\checkhd.txt"

A blank command window will open on your desktop, then close in a few minutes. This is normal.
A file icon named checkhd.txt should appear on your Desktop. Please post the contents of this file.
Please reply with:-

Dear Muppy03,

Thanks for the P2P advice.

FYI, I uninstalled Mozilla Firefox and am unable to reinstall. Also, I uninstalled Java and am unable to reinstall. I am not able to update or run a Malwarebaytes system scan.

Also, I have encountered a prompt at Windows startup saying wuauclt.exe encountered problem and needs to close.

Aside, I have uninstalled Frostwire and UTorrent, ran a Hijackthis scan, and checked the hard disk for errors.

The logs for Hijackthis and Hard Disk are posted as follows:

Hi Tom,

I uninstalled Mozilla Firefox and am unable to reinstall. Also, I uninstalled Java and am unable to reinstall. I am not able to update or run a Malwarebaytes system scan.

Can you explain a bit more about what is happening when you do the above? Are you getting specific error messages? For example, are you able to save the firefox installer to your desktop? Then it won’t run? Or does the problem arise when trying save the installer. When you say MBAM won’t update, are you getting error messages or is the system just freezing? What happens when you try to scan? Please let me know as much as you can in your next reply.

NEXT

Go to Start-Settings-Control Panel, click on Add remove Programs. If any of the following programs are listed there, click on the program to highlight it, and click on remove. Then close the Control Panel.

    PeerGuardian 2.0

NEXT

Using Windows Explorer, locate the following folder and delete it if present.
To access Windows Explorer Right click the start button and select the explore option.

    C:\Program Files\PeerGuardian2

NEXT

Once the above is done REBOOT.

When the computer restarts see if you can update MBAM.

Dear Muppy03,

Thanks for the continued help.

I've uninstalled PeerGuardian and deleted the PeerGuardian folder from Windows Explorer.

I was able to update MBAM and download the Mozilla Firefox installer to my desktop.

Unfortunately, my system crashed during the MBAM system scan. Also, extraction of Mozilla Firefox failed with a pop up saying the file is corrupt.

Upon CPU start up a pop up of Windows-registry recovery: one of the files containing the system's registry data had to be recovered by use of a log or alternate copy was encountered.

Also, a pop up saying Microsoft Intellipoint has encountered a problem and needs to close was encountered.

Thanks again.

Tom

Hi Tom,

We are not having much luck here and to be honest I cannot find anything (so far) that would cause the problems you are having. We will try a couple of more scans before we come to that decision though. There is a chance the problems you are continuing to have are not malware related at all and I might have to refer you on to a technical site. Personally, if it was me I might be thinking about backing up important docs, pics etc at this stage for the ‘just in case’ scenario.

Download and run Combofix
This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.
ComboFix SHOULD NOT be used unless requested by a forum helper

Please download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2
Link 3

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools.
  • If you need help to disable your protection programs see here.
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Image
Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Image
Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it will produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log.

If you need help, see this link:
