Anti-Virus programs will not update

Unread postby skoobasteve » February 24th, 2009, 10:01 pm

Hi, my computer's anti-virus programs will not update. The programs I have tried include AVG, Norton, and Ad-Aware. Windows defender also fails to update itself. Also, my Norton found Trojan.Brisv.A!inf, and I used the symmantec tool to find it and remove it - but the file can't be moved to the Recycle Bin for deletion. Furthermore, I have been lucky enough to receive what seems to be malware: "safe-site.com", which directs me to other random websites when I try to load certain other pages, such as Facebook and Google Images. Here is my logfile:

Re: Anti-Virus programs will not update

Unread postby dan12 » February 25th, 2009, 2:10 pm

Your computer has infections, including a backdoor. A backdoor gives intruders complete control of your computer, logs your keystrokes, steal personal information, etc.

You are strongly advised to do the following:

  • Disconnect the computer from the Internet and from any networked computers until it is cleaned.
  • Back up all your important data except programs. The programs can be reinstalled back from the original disc or from the Net.
  • Call all your banks, financial institutions, credit card companies and inform them that you may be a victim of identity theft and put a watch on your accounts. If you don't mind the hassle, change all your account numbers.
  • From a clean computer, change all your passwords (ISP login password, your email address(es) passwords, financial accounts, PayPal, eBay, Amazon, online groups and forums and any other online activities you carry out which require a username and password).

Do NOT change your passwords from this computer as the attacker will be able to get all the new passwords and transaction records.

Due to its backdoor functionality, your computer is very likely to have been compromised and there is no way that it can be trusted again. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of Trojan, the best course of action would be to do a reformat and reinstallation of the operating system (OS).

To help you understand more, please take some time to read the following articles:

What are Remote Access Trojans and why are they dangerous
How do I respond to a possible identity theft and how do I prevent it
When should do a reformat and reinstallation of my OS
Where to backup your files
How to backup your files in Windows XP
Restoring your backups

Sorry it couldn't be better news

My Norton says the Backdoor Trojan has been blocked... Do you have any more suggestions on what to do besides completely reinstall the OS? This is mainly because I do not, in fact, own a backup for my OS.

This system has been compromised and I will be doing you an injustice If I was to continue a clean up.
If, I could get it clean, there is no way you could trust this again.
Who is to say six months down the line when you have forgotten about the infection as it's been cleaned, you then see something on line that you would like to buy !! Then your problems will begin. I strongly advice you to reformat.

Just a quick follow-up question... Without a Vista boot disk from the manufacturer, how is it possible to re-format the hard drive with the normal factory-installed Operating System? And if this work needs to be done, sadly price is an object. Being a college student, I don't exactly have money flying around and I find myself on a slightly tight budget.

Again, an alternative way of cleaning up the computer would be more than welcomed. I only use this laptop for internet access and Microsoft Office programs for the most part, and I think would be fine with just figuring out a possibility to rid the computer of the trojan, and find a way to update my anti-virus programs.

I appreciate your circumstances and the tight budget students work to, for reasons outlined I'm not able to further assist.
Try contacting the manufacturer where you brought the pc and explain,I'm sure they would be able to help you with a disc.
Most pc's come with a valid disc or recovery disc.
