Virus removed, but computer is still very slow

Unread postby summerlee » February 17th, 2009, 11:39 pm

About a month ago, this error message was appearing on startup and computer performance was severely impacted:

Error loading C:\Windows\wftadfi16_080819a.dll
The specified module could not be found.

Through searching prior topics on this site, I ran SDFix and this error message no longer appeared. However, performance did not measurably improve. I have also downloaded Spybot and it found a few programs that have been removed. Still no improvement in performance.

I have also run defrag, scan disk, checked disk space, eaned out temp files, etc. Basically everything recommended on this site. I'm one of those people who likes to try to figure it out themselves, but I am out of ideas.

Here is a current HijackThis log:

Hi

I'm going to list a couple of HJT lines with my comments. However, before that, the main issue:

You are running multiple antivirus programs
This will have a dramatic effect on your computer.
  • Antivirus programs take up a lot of memory - imagine running two!
  • Your computer stability is reduced by running more antivirus programs than one
  • Your two antivirus programs both patch important system areas and could hinder eachother
  • Antivirus software cannot scan files that are already in use by another antivirus scanner. This means they will both miss malware!
With all this in mind, please remove one of these two programs:

McAfee
Norton Antivirus

Now, my comments on other parts of the log:

R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customi ... earch.html
This is a minor hijacker, it's bad but won't really impact performance.

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyServer = sas.r1.attbi.com:8000
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyOverride = *.R1.ATTBI.COM;localhost;*.local
These lines I don't recognize, they have something to do with proxy servers. The first line defines a proxy you may be using, the second one defines lines for which the proxy will NOT be invoked.
Do you use a proxy server?

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {E3215F20-3212-11D6-9F8B-00D0B743919D} - (no file)
These can be safely fixed.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [CamMonitor] c:\Program Files\HP\Digital Imaging\Unload\hpqcmon.exe
Related to digital imaging. This is not required to run on startup, you can start it manually if you need it. Fixing this line may improve performance.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [MediaFace Integration] C:\Program Files\DVD\MediaFACE 4.0\SetHook.exe
Related to cd label design software. This is not required to run on startup, you can start it manually if you need it. Fixing this line may improve performance.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AlcxMonitor] ALCXMNTR.EXE
This is minor spyware.

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [NVIEW] rundll32.exe nview.dll,nViewLoadHook
My research says: "This is a DLL to enable multiple display monitors on a single computer. It can be a cause of numerous problems on some computers". So unless you use multiple monitors you can fix this line.

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Yahoo! Pager] C:\Program Files\Yahoo!\Messenger\ypager.exe -quiet
This is the Yahoo messenger. Not needed to start up automatically unless you use it every day. You may want to fix this line to improveperformance.

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [PhotoShow Deluxe Media Manager] C:\PROGRA~1\Comcast\COMCAS~1\data\Xtras\mssysmgr.exe
Photo manager. You can start it manually if you need it.

Also, I see that you use a "WinModem". These are actually quite resource intensive. Just something to keep in mind - it may or may not be a part of your slowdowns.

These are duplicates:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [YSearchProtection] "C:\Program Files\Yahoo!\Search Protection\SearchProtection.exe"
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Search Protection] C:\Program Files\Yahoo!\Search Protection\SearchProtection.exe
You can fix one of them.

Open hijackthis, click do a system scan only, put a check next to these, click fix checked:

note on bolded lines above: fix them if you don't recognize/need them (= if you don't use a proxy server)

These are optionals. Fixing these lines may improve performance.

After performing those steps -

DDS (Doesn't Do Squat)
Download DDS by sUBs to your desktop.
Your antivirus software might question the file. If it does, turn it off please :)
  • Double click DDS.scr to run it and wait for the scan to finish
  • When finished DDS.txt will open
  • A small while later, a prompt will open. Answer Yes
  • DDS will continue scanning
  • When done, Attach.txt will open
  • Post DDS.txt and attach Attach.txt

Post next the DDS log.txt and attach attach.txt

I have one last question:
Error loading C:\Windows\wftadfi16_080819a.dll
The specified module could not be found.

Do you still get this message?

Re: Virus removed, but computer is still very slow

Thank you for looking at this. I will review your recommendations.

With regard to the two antivirus programs, I have tried several ways to uninstall Norton since I switched to McAfee. I have tried through the Control Panel a few times and also downloaded the Norton Removal Tool from the Symantec website and have run that a few times. The icon no longer shows as an active program in the tray, so some portion of the program was removed or disabled.

Do you have any recommendations to fully remove any remaining part of the program?

No, I no longer get this message
Error loading C:\Windows\wftadfi16_080819a.dll

I fixed all of the items suggested. I ran DSS and the Attach file is attached and below is the DSS file.

Per my prior post, please let me know if you have suggestions to finish removing Norton.
Also, I don't believe I use WinModem. Is there an entry you saw that would tell me more about what that is?

Re: Virus removed, but computer is still very slow

I'll look over your logs shortly, in the meantime to answer your questions:

regarding norton - norton removal tool: http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/ts ... 3108162039

regarding winmodem - my research says: WinModems use software rather than hardware - hence putting a load on the CPU.

How do you connect to the internet? It may be that the WinModem software is unneeded.

Update your Adobe Reader
Your version of Adobe Reader is old and may contain security leaks. Please first uninstall the older version, then download and install the newest version from here.
Java is old too. Uninstall these:

Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2
Java(TM) 6 Update 11
Java(TM) 6 Update 6
Java(TM) 6 Update 7

Download and install the latest version from here. The site is a bit confusing; this is what you should do:
  • Scroll down to where it says Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 12.
  • Click the Download button to the right.
  • Choose the correct Platform. Also, check the box that says I agree to the Java SE Runtime Environment 6 License Agreement.
  • Now, click Continue.
  • Click on the filename under Windows Offline Installation and save it to your desktop.
  • Now, close all other windows. Including Internet Explorer.
  • You can now install Java by double-clicking the executable you just downloaded.

Also this program:
NoAdware v5.0
is a bit suspicious. I think it used to be a fake scanner. I recommend you uninstall it.

How much RAM do you have?

After uninstalling norton and performing above steps, post a new hijackthis log and tell me how the computer is running.

I read the Norton Removal Instructions a little more closely and realized that I had the Corporate Edition installed. I had tried the Norton Removal Tool in the past, but it is not for the Corporate Edition. I found these instructions to manually uninstall the Corporate version.

http://service1.symantec.com/support/ent-security.nsf/854fa02b4f5013678825731a007d06af/934d7988e4ebff7c88257348007a2574?OpenDocument

I was able to follow these steps, except Steps 7 & 8, because I did not have this key listed.
7. Go to the following key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Symantec\InstalledApps

8. In the right pane, delete the following values:
· NAVCEClient Number
· VP6ClientInstalled
· VP6TempID

I did find this key. Should I delete it?
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Symantec\Norton Antivirus NT\

As for the other questions:
I connect to the internet through a cable modem plugged into a wireless router. I have a wired connection to the router from this PC. I use the wireless router for my work laptop.

I have 512MB of RAM.

After following the Norton removal steps and uninstall/reinstall the programs you suggested, the performance does seem better. Still not as fast as my laptop, but it's an improvement.

Here is a new HJT log.

re norton: does this tool work? http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/ts ... g=en&ct=us

You may want to add in another GB of RAM - it will really improve performance.

That Norton Removal Tool is the same version I tried about a month ago that didn't work.

Did it look like Norton was still running from the last log? I went through the manual process to remove Norton prior to my post on Monday 23 Feb, 2009 10:48 pm, so hopefully it is not present in that log.

The speed has noticably improved. I will definitely try adding RAM too.

In the last log you posted Norton appears to be gone.

Would you like me to give you some tips to prevent malware attacks in the future?

Only glad to help :)

It looks like you don't have a firewall installed. (Unless McAfee is a "suite" - in that case it does incorporate a firewall). I recommend you to install one.

Install a firewall
There is no firewall installed on your computer!
Either that, or you're using Windows Firewall, which is not a good idea.

Firewalls are programs that monitor incoming and outcoming connections to your computer. Did you know that, just by connecting to the internet, you are being exposed to hundreds of treats immediately? The way to solve this, is to use a firewall, and up-to-date antivirus software.

Windows Firewall only monitors incoming connections. This means that, once you are infected, the malware is free to ask for new instructions, send private data to its creator, or invite its malware buddies to come over. In other words: it's almost as good as no firewall at all.

Download a free for personal use firewall NOW. If you can't find a good one, try one of these:
Online Armor Free
Agnitum Outpost Free

This is my normal post for when you are clean of malware infections:

Congratulations!

Image Image Image Image Image Image

As far as I can tell, you are CLEAN!

Image

Have a big cup of Image, sit back & relax, and now please follow a few of the following tips; they will dramatically reduce your chance of getting infected again.

  • Turn on Automatic Updates if you have not done so. It is MANDATORY to keep your Windows updated, otherwise you are vulnerable to exploits! To turn on Automatic Updates: click Start > Control Panel > Security Centre > Automatic Updates.

Below are optional items. They will increase your security, but are not really "needed". That said, I recommend following at least one of these tips.

  • Install WinPatrol from here. Instructions for use are here.

  • Install a custom hosts file. Let's say I have a directory of 640kb's worth of bad sites. Let's say I can make sure you will never be able to access those sites, so you will never get any infection from those sites. It's like blocking a site - without site blocking tools. How would you like to never be able to visit (a lot, but not all of the) malware-infected sites again? Well, now you can!
First, we must disable a service, as Windows cannot work with a very large hosts file while that service is active. This will not affect anything else.
    The disabling routine:
    • Click Start, then Run
