My Desktop is Behaving Badly

Unread postby Gator2000 » February 10th, 2009, 8:08 pm

Dear Folks,

My desktop is behaving badly. Most times it takes forever to access the internet. AVG free keeps identifying some threats as Win32/Heur

mscupdate.exe; ipow32.exe

No matter how often they are quarantined, they reappear.

Here is the lastest log. Please tell me what to do. Thanks.

Hi Gator2000,

You have more than 1 antivirus programs installed on your computer.

They are:

  1. Norton Internet Security
  2. AVG Antivirus

This is not recommended as it can cause system instabilities. Having more than one antivirus programs also doesn't mean more protection for your computer, but may lower your computer's defenses.

Please choose to keep either AVG Antivirus or Norton Internet Security. You can uninstall either one of them via Start > Control Panel and double clicking on Add/Remove Programs.

Once you've removed one of the antivirus programs, please restart your computer.

When done, please continue with the following:

Step 1

Please download DDS from Bleeping Computer and save it to your desktop.

Double click on dds to run it.

When done, DDS.txt will open. Another file, Attach.txt will open after a short while. Please save these 2 files to your desktop as they will be deleted once you close them.

Please attach Attach.txt in your next reply by scrolling down to Upload attachment and clicking on Browse....

An image is below for your reference:

Image

Step 2

Please download gmer.zip from Gmer and save it to your desktop.

  1. Right click on gmer.zip and select Extract All....
  2. Click Next on seeing the Welcome to the Compressed (zipped) Folders Extraction Wizard.
  3. Click on the Browse button. Click on Desktop. Then click OK.
  4. Click Next. It will start extracting.
  5. Once done, check (tick) the Show extracted files box and click Finish.

Double click on gmer.exe to run it. It will start running a scan. If it detects rootkit activity, you will receive a prompt to run a full scan. Click Yes.

  • When done, you may receive another notice. Click OK.
  • Click on Save ... to save a log.
  • Copy and paste in Gmer.txt and click Save.
  • Close Gmer.

If you receive no notice, click on the Scan button.

  • It will start scanning again.
  • When done, click on Save ... to save a log.
  • Copy and paste in Gmer.txt and click Save.
  • Close Gmer.

Note: Do not run any programs while Gmer is running.

In your next reply, please post:

  1. DDS.txt
  2. Attach.txt (attached to this topic)
  3. Gmer.txt

Thank you very much for your response.

AVG is more recent but Norton has excellent parent controls; so I deleted AVG free.

I have the files attach.txt; DDS.txt and GMER.txt

Hi Gator2000,

Step 1

Please disable Norton Antivirus temporary as it may interfere with the fixes.

Right click on Norton's Antivirus icon near the clock and select Disable.

If you are using Norton Antivirus 2005, a new window will open. Please choose a reasonable amount of time to disable Norton Antivirus temporarily (about 30 minutes is enough).

Step 2

Please visit this page to download and run Combofix - http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

Save it to your desktop.

  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

  • As part of its process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. You will see the following message if Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is not installed.

    Image

With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue its malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Image

Click on Yes to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, a log will be produced. Please post this log in your next reply.

Do not mouse click on Combofix while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

Hi Gator2000,

Please disable Norton Antivirus temporarily as per the previous post.

Next, please open Notepad and copy and paste the following into Notepad:

Code: Select all
File::
c:\documents and settings\Racquel\csrcpr.exe
c:\documents and settings\Racquel\opti.exe

Folder::
c:\program files\AVG

Registry::
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager]
"BootExecute"=hex(7):61,75,74,6f,63,68,65,63,6b,20,61,75,74,6f,63,68,6b,20,2a,00,00

Click on File > Save As....

In the File Name field, copy and paste in CFScript.txt. Do not change the file name.

Click Save.

Referring to the picture below, drag CFScript into Combofix.

Image

Combofix will start running. When done, a log will be produced. Please post this log in your next reply.

Do not mouse click on Combofix while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

Hi Gator2000,

Please try updating your antivirus. Let me know if you have trouble updating it.

Yes,

I have trouble updating Norton because the subscription has expired and I do not have a credit card to correct that I can use at this time. (I am out of the US, too). That is why I had downloaded AVG free to work alongside Norton.

At the same time I love Norton because of its parental controls. Other people here use the PC and I have to block a lot of websites that they go to. I do not know if there is a freeware that will allow me to do the same thing.

Hi Gator2000,

I can't find any freeware that matches Norton's parental controls, however, if you want a blanket block for all users, I can give you a suggestion.

Due to a lack of activity, this topic is now closed.

If you still require help, please open a new thread in the Infected? Virus, malware, adware, ransomware, oh my! forum, include a fresh FRST log, and wait for a new helper.
