Odd IE behaviour after reinstalling windows

Unread postby walshie » February 8th, 2009, 7:46 pm

Hi,
I have a machine that is running XP Home Edition that would not boot. It seemed fine when last closed down but when starting the next day it constantly gave the to option to start in safe mode or last known good state etc. In the event none would cause the machine to boot. I had to start from the Windows CD and reinstall Wndows. All seemed fine for a while (few hours) but now IE will not start - although it appears as a running process etc and killing the process and trying again doesn't help. There are some odd performance issues also with CPU usage suddenly running to to 90% for no apparent reason. I've run spybot and AVG virus check and Adaware but with nothing unusual showing up? Am I missing something?
I'de really appreciate your help.
Thanks,
W

Please note that all instructions given are customised for this computer only, the tools used may cause damage if used on a computer with different infections.

If you think you have similar problems, please post a log in the HJT forum and wait for help.

Hi walshie and welcome to Malware Removal :)

I'm Dakeyras and I am going to try to assist you with your problem. Please take note of the below:

  • I will start working on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine!.
  • The process is not instant. Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine is clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • If you don't know, stop and ask! Don't keep going on.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
  • Refrain from running self fixes as this will hinder the malware removal process.
  • It may prove beneficial if you print of the following instructions or save them to notepad as I post them.
  • Your security programs may give warnings for some of the tools I will ask you to use. Be assured, any links I give are safe.

Extra note: Please be aware as I am still in training all of my fixes/posts require prior checking by a Expert. So some delays may be inevitable, please be patient and I will reply again asap.

Next:

In the interim I would like to view a list of currently installed software applications on you're PC. How to provide as follows:

Start/Run HiJackThis and click on Open the Misc Tools section

  • Click Open Uninstall Manager...
  • Click Save list... and save it to your Desktop.
  • Copy and paste the file uninstall_list.txt into your next reply.

Hi :)

Thanks for your help.

You're welcome!

As it stands I cannot see any malware related issues in your HijackThis Log, though a possible hardware/resource issue with the Creative Labs Sound Blaster associated running process. Do you use a four speaker setup at all?

Next:

Make sure Hidden Files are visible:

  • Click Start.
  • Open My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View Tab.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
  • Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Click OK.

Next:

There is a file I would like to check, please carry out the following:

Note: Internet Explorer is the browser to use for best results.

  • Please go to VirSCAN.org free on-line scan service.
  • Copy and paste the following file path into the "Suspicious files to scan" box at the top of the page:

    c:\program files\google\googletoolbar2.dll

  • Click on the Upload button
  • Once the Scan is completed, click on the "Copy to Clipboard" button. This will copy the link of the report into the Clipboard.
  • Paste the contents of the Clipboard in your next reply. (Ctrl & V)

Next:

Now I would like to perform a more in-depth research of your system as follows:

  • Please download Random's System Information Tool by random/random from here and save it to your desktop.
Please make sure that RSIT.exe is on the your Desktop before running the application.
  • Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • Once it has finished, two logs will open:
    • log.txt will be opened maximized.
    • info.txt will be opened minimized.
  • Please post the contents of both log.txt and info.txt.

When completed the above, please post back the following:

  • Any problems encountered and or further symptoms?
  • Answer to my Sound Blaster/Speaker query.
  • File submission results.
  • Both RSIT Logs.

Hi again!
In answer to your ealrier question about speakers - I just run a couple of standard external speakers (two) - nothing fancy at all.

I did notice tonight that the machine does seem to freeze for a few seconds (even whilst typing this) and the mouse motion is very irratic - like the CPU is being really pushed hard at times - but there are no other applications running.

VirScan didn't seem to find anything odd with the file - but here's the log file.

Re: Odd IE behaviour after reinstalling windows

Hi :)

Please navigate to the following location as follows:

Start >> My Computer >> Local Disk (C:) >> rsit

Within the rsit folder, please check if info.txt is to be found, please post that in your next reply. In the event it isn't, do not be alarmed just inform myself please.

From the logs currently provided there is indication a USB device that has been attached to you computer may be infected. Can you confirm if any what exactly you do attach to your computer be it say a USB drive/flash stick for example.

Hi - thanks again.
I will run these steps tonight when I get home.
In the meantime, there are a few USB devices which are permanently connected:

External Hard Drive - only fired up every two weeks or so for backup purposes. I have run a virus check and adaware/spybot against this drive with no issues found.

USB Mouse
USB printer connected

In terms of USB devices plugged in and out form time to time:

My wife's memory stick - could be suspect?
Daughters iPod - ditto?
Digital Camera - could be but doubt it as it is never connected elsewhere etc

Hope that this helps?
Get back to you tonight wth the othe rinfo.

Thanks,
W

Hi,
Sorry forthe delay!
Here is the info.txt file as requested.
Hope this is what you needed?

In the meantime, I'll run a virus check against the memory stick that my wife uses and see ifthat throws up anything?

Thanks again!

Re: Odd IE behaviour after reinstalling windows

Unread postby Dakeyras » February 22nd, 2009, 5:59 am

Hi :)

Here is the situation, we will address the malware infection I have identified first. Then later on remove/update some out of date software and try to improve overall performance.

Flash Disinfector:

We will be targeting the following:

Your Daughters iPod
External Hard Drive
Your wife's memory stick

  • Please download Flash_Disinfector and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click to run it.
  • You will be prompted to plug in your flash drive. Plug it in.
  • Flash_Disinfector will start disinfecting your flash and hard drives. This takes a few seconds. Your desktop will disappear in the meantime.
  • When done, a message box will appear. Click OK. Your desktop should now appear. If it doesn't, press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
  • Click on File > New Task (Run...). Type in explorer.exe and press Enter. Your desktop should now appear.

Repeat the above process with every removable media I highlighted above please.

Note: Flash Disinfector will create a hidden folder named autorun.inf in each partition and every USB drive plugged in when you ran it. Don't delete this folder...it will help protect your drives from future infection.

Backup the Registry:

Modifying the Registry can create unforeseen problems, so it always wise to create a backup before doing so.

  • Please go here and download ERUNT.
  • ERUNT (Emergency Recovery Utility NT) is a free program that allows you to keep a complete backup of your registry and restore it when needed.
  • Install ERUNT by following the prompts.
  • Use the default install settings but say no to the portion that asks you to add ERUNT to the Start-Up folder. You can enable this option later if you wish.
  • Start ERUNT either by double clicking on the desktop icon or choosing to start the program at the end of the setup process.
  • Choose a location for the backup. Note: the default location is C:\WINDOWS\ERDNT which is acceptable.
  • Make sure that at least the first two check boxes are selected.
  • Click on OK
  • Then click on YES to create the folder.

Next:

Please download OTMoveIT3 to your Desktop.

  • Double-click OTMoveIt3.exe to start the program.
  • Copy the lines from the codebox to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + B (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose Copy):

Code: Select all
:processes
explorer.exe

:Reg
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Browser Helper Objects\{7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045}]
[-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045}]
[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\explorer\mountpoints2\{49caba00-b495-11dc-80d7-00038a000015}]

:Commands
[EmptyTemp]
[Start Explorer]
[Reboot]
  • Return to OTMoveIt3, right-click in the "Paste instructions for items to be moved" window (under the yellow bar) and choose Paste
  • Then click the red MoveIt! button.
  • Copy everything in the Results window (under the green bar) to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of it and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose Copy), and paste it into your next response.
  • If OTMoveIt asks to reboot your computer, allow it to do so. The report should appear in Notepad after the reboot.
  • Close OTMoveIt3.

Next:

Please make sure that RSIT.exe is still on the Desktop.(if not inform myself straight away please)

  • Double click once on RSIT.exe
  • RSIT will start running, at the disclaimer click on Continue.
  • When done, 1 log will be produced.
  • Post that in your next reply.

When completed the above, please post back the following:

  • OTMoveIT3 Log.
  • A new RSIT Log.

Re: Odd IE behaviour after reinstalling windows

Unread postby Dakeyras » February 23rd, 2009, 6:14 am

Hi :)

Thanks again for your very clear instructions.

You're welcome!

Code: Select all
Total RAM: 383 MB (13% free)

Some friendly advice concerning the above. It would be prudent in the future to consider installing some new upgraded memory modules.

Though Microsoft claims XP will run with a mere 128 MB installed in my humble opinion a minimum of 1 GB is far better.

If you wish to upgrade the installed memory, Crucial have a Active X scanner which is perfectly safe and will advise if your system can support any upgraded memory modules. They cater for the US/UK and Europe.

GrooveMonitor:

The aforementioned is a system resource intensive application, if you do not use this I advise you read the below Microsoft article on how to uninistall both correctly and safely:

How to uninstall Groove

Next:

OK lets see what I can do to free some system resources and improve overall performance. Some of these are deemed optional removals and will be highlighted in Red.

Now please go to Start >> Control Panel >> Add/Remove Programs and remove the following (if present):

Ad-Aware <-- No need, plus it is actually active in memory as a service.
Adobe Acrobat Reader 3.01 <-- Older installations pose a security risk and a possible back-door for malware. We will update this later.
Adobe Reader 7.0.8 <-- As Above.
IomegaWare <-- Unless you use a Zip drive, this can be removed.
iTunes <-- System resource hog, if not used, remove it.
Java(TM) 6 Update 7 <-- Older installations pose a security risk and a possible back-door for malware. We will update this later.
QuickTime <-- System resource hog, if not used, remove it.
Sound Blaster Live! <-- System resource hog, if not used, remove it.(This is only needed for a 4 speaker set up)
Uniblue RegistryBooster 2 <---Not a desirable application at all. Please read this forum topic pertaining.
Uniblue System Tweaker <-- As above.
Windows Defender Signatures <- No need as this application is actually not installed.

Note: Take extra care in answering questions posed by any Uninstaller. Some questions may be worded to deceive you into keeping the program.

Now Reboot(restart) your computer.

Next:

New Adobe Reader Installation:-

  • Please download Adobe Reader 9 to your PC's desktop.
  • Install the new downloaded updated software.
  • If you already have Adobe Photoshop® Album Starter Edition installed or do not wish to have it installed UNcheck the box which says Also Download Adobe Photoshop® Album Starter Edition.
Note: Adobe 9 is a large program and if you prefer a smaller program you can get Foxit 2.3 instead from here.

If you choose to install FoxitReader, be carefull not to install anything to do with AskBar.

New Java Installation:-

  • Click here to visit Java's website.
  • Scroll down to Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 12. Click on Download.
  • Select Windows from the drop-down list for Platform.
  • Select Multi-language from the drop-down list for Language.
  • Check (tick) I agree to the Java SE Runtime Environment 6 License Agreement box and click on Continue.
  • Click on jre-6u12-windows-i586-p.exe link to download it and save this to a convenient location.
  • Double click on jre-6u12-windows-i586-p.exe to install Java.

  • Inform myself how your computer is running and or any problems encountered ?
  • A new RSIT Log.
