Unread postby davis » February 16th, 2009, 3:25 am

Hi DJGarry,

Step1

Older versions Java have vulnerabilities that malicious sites can use to exploit and infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) Version 6 and save it to your desktop.
  • Scroll down to where it says "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 12...allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Select your Platform: "Windows".
  • Select your Language: "Multi-language".
  • Read the License Agreement, and then check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • Click Continue and the page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and save the file to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check (highlight) the following Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
      J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 3
      J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 9
      Java(TM) 6 Update 2
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u12-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.

Step2

  1. Please use the following link and download ERUNT.
  2. http://aumha.org/freeware/freeware.php
  3. For the zipped version:
  4. Unzip all the files into a folder of your choice.
  5. Click Erunt.exe to backup your registry to the folder of your choice.
Note: to restore your registry, go to the folder and start ERDNT.exe

Start OTMoveIt3.exe by OldTimer from your desktop.
  • Double click on OTMoveIt3.exe to run it
  • Copy & paste the contents of the Code box below into Paste Instructions for Items to be Moved
  • Note: Do not type it out to minimize the risk of typo error

    [Reboot]
  • Click on MoveIt!
  • When done, click on Exit
  • Note: If a file or folder can't be moved immediately, you may be asked to restart your computer. Choose Yes.
  • A log will be produced at C:\_OTMoveIt\MovedFiles\date_time.log, where date_time are numbers. Post this log in your next reply.

Step3

Before we start fixing anything you should print out these instructions or copy them to a NotePad file so they will be accessible. Some steps will require you to disconnect from the Internet or use Safe Mode and you will not have access to this page.

Please download DrWeb-CureIt and save it to your desktop. DO NOT perform a scan yet.

Reboot your computer in "Safe Mode" using the F8 method. To do this, restart your computer and after hearing your computer beep once during startup (but before the Windows icon appears) press the F8 key repeatedly. A menu will appear with several options. Use the arrow keys to navigate and select the option to run Windows in "Safe Mode".

Scan with Dr.Web CureIt as follows:
  • Double-click on launch.exe to open the program and click Start. (There is no need to update if you just downloaded the most current version
  • Read the Virus check by DrWeb scanner prompt and click Ok where asked to Start scan now? Allow the setup.exe to load if asked by any of your security programs.
  • The Express scan will automatically begin.
(This is a short scan of files currently running in memory, boot sectors, and targeted folders).
  • If prompted to dowload the Full version Free Trial, ignore and click the X to close the window.
  • If an infected object is found, you will be prompted to move anything that cannot be cured. Click Yes to All.
  • When complete, click Select All, then choose Cure > Move incurable.
(This will move any detected files to the C:\Documents and Settings\userprofile\DoctorWeb\Quarantine folder if they can't be cured)
  • Now put a check next to Complete scan to scan all local disks and removable media.
  • In the top menu, click Settings > Change settings, and UNcheck "Heuristic analysis" under the "Scanning" tab, then click Ok.
  • Back at the main window, click the green arrow "Start Scanning" button on the right under the Dr.Web logo.
  • When the scan is complete, a message will be displayed at the bottom indicating if any viruses were found.
  • Click "Yes to all" if asked to cure or move the file(s) and select "Move incurable".
  • In the top menu, click file and choose save report list.
  • Save the DrWeb.csv report to your desktop.
  • Exit Dr.Web Cureit when done.
  • Important! Reboot your computer because it could be possible that files in use will be moved/deleted during reboot.
  • After reboot, post the contents of the log from Dr.Web in your next reply. (You can use Notepad to open the DrWeb.cvs report)
.

Step4

1.
Please go to Here to download XP TCP/IP Repair, Click Reset TCP/IP and Repair Winsock. Reboot you pc.
2.
Please go to Start -> Control Panel, and choose Network Connections. Then right click on your default connection, usually Local Area Connection or Dial-up Connection if you are using Dial-up, and left click on properties.
Double-click on the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) item and select the radio button that says Obtain DNS servers automatically. Click OK twice, and restart your computer.
3.
Start> Run> type "cmd",>copy/paste "ipconfig /flushdns" without quote in C:\( C:\>ipconfig /flushdns)>press Enter. . You should get a response like "Sucessfully flushed the DNS resolver cache.
4.
Unplug internet access from your Router, If you have a Router, there should be a little pinhole in the back of the unit. Press and hold down the small button inside until the lights on the front of the router blink off and then on again (usually about 10 seconds). You may also want to ask your ISP for help in case there are custom settings that need to be maintained.

Restart your pc. Now, Plug you internet access, and start you IE. Tell me what's going on there. In real practise, If no joy whatsoever, i will uninstall Zonealarm temporarily. When the issue is resolved, then reinstall it

In your next reply, please post back:

1.OTMoveIT log
2.Dr.Web.csv
3.New HJT log.

Tell me how things are going now.

Right.

Done just about all the things you siad ....
The Java download didn't seem right ... It did leave me with the correct .exe file on my desktop .... but a .jnpl file instead.
All the old Java stuff was deleted tho.

I do seem to have some sort of web connection now as Windows has worked out it has some updates that are ready to install ... although I have no pages coming up in IE. AVG seems upand running .... but
I only seem to have less than 1 day left before windows needs activating ........

Zone Alarm seems to be the main problem with the net connection.

There's a Z in the system tray and if you hover over it, it says:

Protection is up, UI is initializing.

Right or left or double clicking on it does nothing .....

In general, The PC is still running quite slowly ....... even taking a long time to perform some mouse click operations ...

Here's the latest logs for you ..............

Hi DJGarry,

The java download link should go to Here. You also can start your homepage from Here if you don't know how.

It's ok to activate your Windows. but you should make sure you have completely removed Zonealarm in you system. Please go to Here and Here for your reference. You also can go to Here to check this article. Hope it helps.

I need the RIST log to check your status, Would you mind scanning a new one? Before running RIST, please go to C:\RIST to delete that folder.

In your next reply, Please post back:

1.RSIT log.txt and info.txt. and detail the problems you're experiencing. Thanks.

Java done ...... ZoneAlarm un-installed ..... Home page not an issue ..... Internet working after dumping ZA ........ RIST logs below ........

AVG Res Shield found around 10 threats in the night ...... Was that part of the RIST scan ???
They were all move to V Vault or deleted .... so should be ok I guess ..

PC in general is MUCH better. It's still very slow to start up .... once logged into user account, I get a plain desktop screen , with no icons, system tray, start bar or anything for maybe a minute or so ..... sometimes longer ....... but when it's done loading, I THINK..... everthing else seems fine. :-)

Have a look at the logs .... and see what you think ....

Hi DJGarry,

Please show all files and navigate to the following filepath to empty Content.IE5 folder to ensure there are no more potential malwares or infections in your system.
C:\Documents and Settings\Garry\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5

After that, Make sure Outlook Express is closed. Navigate to the following filepath and hold down the Shift key and the Delete key on your keyboard to delete that Sent Items folder and Sutton.dbx message (this file only):

C:\Documents and Settings\Garry\Local Settings\Application Data\Identities\{DC41BD49-5B46-4532-B750-D3E1E70E7147}\Microsoft\Outlook Express\Sent Items.dbx
C:\Documents and Settings\Garry\Local Settings\Application Data\Identities\{DC41BD49-5B46-4532-B750-D3E1E70E7147}\Microsoft\Outlook Express\Sutton.dbx

or you can go to Here for your reference if you have problems to delete the corrupted messages.

Other than those, your system is clear now. Any issue left? If not, let's do some housecleaning.

  6. The tool will delete itself once it finishes, if not delete it by yourself.
  7. Note: If you receive a warning from your firewall or other security programs regarding OTCleanIt attempting to contact the internet, please allow it to do so.

Remember to delete the Dr.Web, RSIT and the folder in C:\rsit.

  5. Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over. I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly. Otherwise, there are some free firewalls in the following:

    FREE FIREWALLS

    • Kerio
    • comodo(Select install the Firewall as a standalone while installation)

You can choose a free firewall from Here. For a tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:

  6. Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware

  7. Install a-squared Free -a-squared free is a product from Emsi Software provided free for private use that can detect and remove a variety of malicious software. If you have a dialup internet connection, you may also like to install a-squared Anti-Dialer which provides some real time protection against premium rate dialers

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Clean your PC with a-squared Free

  8. Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
