virusprotection2008 and other popups

Unread postby empyreanlc » January 29th, 2009, 1:03 am

It appears as a virus alert prompting me to scan and fix my computer with it.

I also get popups like http://www.registrydefender.com/l/index ... ron_113090

and my MyDocuments folder would randomly open every few minutes.

also I am unable to make an uninstall manager list. When I click 'save list' the Hijackthis closes.

here's the log file

Hello, and Image to the Malware Removal forums.
My name is Michael I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems.

HijackThis logs can take some time to research, so please be patient with me. I know that you need
your computer working as quickly as possible, and I will work hard to help see that happen.

Please be patient and I'd be grateful if you would note the following:
  • I will be working on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine.
  • Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • If after 5 days you have not responded to this topic, it will be closed, and you will need to start a new one.
  • It's often worth reading through these instructions and printing them for ease of reference.
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to say or ask!! It's better to be sure and safe than sorry.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
  • All of my posts need to be checked by a teacher, so please be patient while I attempt to remove your malware.

Make an uninstall list using HijackThis
To access the Uninstall Manager you would do the following:
  • Start HijackThis
  • Click on the Config button
  • Click on the Misc Tools button
  • Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.
  • Click on the Save list... button and specify where you would like to save this file. When you press Save button a notepad will open with the contents of that file. Save the file to your desktop.

Please post this log on your next reply.

Thanks, Michael

Download and Run ComboFix

Please visit this webpage for instructions for downloading ComboFix at your DESKTOP :
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix
Please ensure you read this guide carefully and install the Recovery Console first.

Additional links to download the tool:
http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe
http://www.forospyware.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe
http://subs.geekstogo.com/ComboFix.exe

Note: The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode. This allows us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware. It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

Once installed, you should see a blue screen prompt that says:

The Recovery Console was successfully installed.

Please continue as follows:
  • Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix. A guide to do this can be found here.
The ones that need to be closed/disabled are:

    Symantec
  • Click Yes to allow ComboFix to continue scanning for malware.
  • When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.
  • Please post the C:\ComboFix.txt along with a new HijackThis log so we may continue cleaning the system.

Save it to your desktop as CFScript.txt

Referring to the picture below, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe
Image
This will let ComboFix run again.
Restart if you have to.
Save the produced logfile to your desktop.

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

Please post the ComboFix log and a new Hijackthis log.

Upload a File to Virustotal

Please visit Virustotal
  • Click the Browse... button
  • Navigate to the file c:\windows\system32\xlive\sqmapi.dll
  • Click the Open button
  • Click the Send button
  • Copy and paste the results back here please.

Run CFScript

Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the box into the window:

Code: Select all
Folder::
c:\documents and settings\Aaron\Application Data\BitTorrent

Save it to your desktop as CFScript.txt

Referring to the picture below, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe
Image
This will let ComboFix run again.
Restart if you have to.
Save the produced logfile to your desktop.

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and save to your desktop.

  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to:

    Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform Full scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked Except for the objects located in C:\System Volume Information, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please copy and paste the log back into your next reply

    Note:
  • The log can also be found here:
    C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\mbam-log-date (time).txt
  • Or via the Logs tab when Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware is started.

Please post the ComboFix log, the Malwarebyte's Anti-Malware log, the Virus Total results, and a new Hijackthis log on your next reply.

From Virustotal:

analisis/712d9d1d3f6656cf050b8bc85c4a68cb

I'm not sure how to follow these instructions
Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the box into the window:

Code:
Folder::
c:\documents and settings\Aaron\Application Data\BitTorrent

I don't seem to have an 'application data' folder. I'm unclear as to what I'm suppose to do at this step.
What do you mean by 'copy/paste the text in the box into the window'. What is the box, and what is the window?

Here's my log results. Should I save that as CFScript.txt and drag into combo script? This would be skipping the step mentioned above.

It seems the results from Virus Total were cut off. Can you please copy and paste all of the results from the scanners? Please copy the whole list of scanners and the result of the file.

Upload a File to Virustotal

Please visit Virustotal
  • Click the Browse... button
  • Navigate to the file c:\windows\system32\xlive\sqmapi.dll
  • Click the Open button
  • Click the Send button
  • Copy and paste the results back here please.

This is exactly what I had you do in the previous post, where you made the CFScript.txt and dragged it onto ComboFix.exe

Run CFScript

Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the code-box into the notepad window:

Code: Select all
Folder::
c:\documents and settings\Aaron\Application Data\BitTorrent

Did you make the CFScript.txt and run it with combofix? Did you run Malwarebyte's Anti-Malware?
