popups plus spybot did something to my command.exe. Help?

Unread postby ichy076 » February 8th, 2009, 12:30 am

I had a friend make me download Spybot in order to help my pop ups problem, but not only did it not get rid of the pop ups, but everytime I turn my computer on, a window pops up and attempts to open windows\command.exe and a bunch of other files, then closes. It does this about 50 times before allowing me to use the computer regularly. How can I make my computer load normally as it did prior to the spybot debacle and how can I get rid of the pop ups? Here is my Hijack this log:

Re: popups plus spybot did something to my command.exe. Help?

Unread postby dan12 » February 12th, 2009, 5:11 pm

I see you run ccleaner, set it as shown and run it.

Set Options in CCleaner and run Cleaning Scan.
Open CCleaner if it's not already running.
( Do not use the Registry block to clean anything with this program. It is for experts only and it is risky).
  • Select Cleaner Settings.
Check Internet Explorer, Windows Explorer, and System so that all items are checked. In the Advanced section, have a check only on Old PreFetch Data.
  • Click on the Options block on the left. Select Advanced.
Uncheck Only delete files in Windows Temp folders older than 48 hours.
  • Set Cookie Retention.
Click on the Options block on the left, then choose Cookies.
Under the Cookies to delete pane, highlight any cookies you would like to retain permanently (those companies or sites with which you regularly visit or do business), and click the right arrow > to move them to the Cookies to keep pane.
  • Run Cleaning Scan. Click on the Cleaner block on the left. Choose the Windows tab.
Click the Run Cleaner button. This process could take a while. When CCleaner shows how much has been removed, cleaning is finished.

Download and run Combofix
This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.
ComboFix SHOULD NOT be used unless requested by a forum helper

Please download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2
Link 3

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Image
Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Image
Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.
When finished, it will produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log.

If you need help, see this link:

Re: popups plus spybot did something to my command.exe. Help?

Unread postby dan12 » February 13th, 2009, 4:02 am

RECOVERY CONSOLE

Go to Microsoft's website => http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310994

Select the download that's appropriate for your Operating System

Image

Download the file & save it as it's originally named, next to ComboFix.exe.

Image

Now close all open windows and programs, including all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

  • Drag the setup package onto ComboFix.exe and drop it.
  • Follow the prompts to start ComboFix and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Recovery Console.
  • At the next prompt, click 'Yes' to run the full ComboFix scan.

    Image

  • When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.
Please post the C:\ComboFix.txt along with a new HijackThis log for further review.

Dan,

When I did as you stated by attempting to install the recovery tool into the combofix, the combofix briefly stated it could not install the recovery tool before continuing on to do what it did before. Here are the logs anyway:

Combofix:

Re: popups plus spybot did something to my command.exe. Help?

Unread postby dan12 » February 14th, 2009, 6:28 am

Hi, could you try and download combofix again from the link I gave you to see if you have the recovery console option.
I would rather this be in place before we move on. Please read the advice given on how to do this.

Re: popups plus spybot did something to my command.exe. Help?

Unread postby ichy076 » February 14th, 2009, 3:10 pm

Dan,

I tried again by dragging the recovery console onto the combofix and what happened was that it did start running and the red and blue installation graph came up, but then the combofix (for only a split second) said that there was a failure with a batch file and then it continued doing what it normally does...

Here are the logs again. I have a laptop and when I tried to run the recovery console by itself, it asked me for 6 floppy disks, which I have no drive for...

Also, if you need me to find some advice on how to get the recovery console working, do you have a link where the advice may be? I am not quite sure where to find it, if I still need to.

Thanks a lot for your help.

Re: popups plus spybot did something to my command.exe. Help?

What ever error messages you get can you write them down for me, as it will help.
Can you go into safe mode and Install the recovery consule
The help information was on my download page for combofix.
Make sure your Anti virus and firewall program are off during the scan.

Dan,

The recovery tool will not install when I place it over the combofix- not even in safe mode. The message I received was (and I do not know whether it has to do with the recovery console) is "The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process." There is a brief flash of the thing that states there is a failure due to a faulty batch, but it flashes for a split second before combofix continues. Any other suggestions for getting the recovery tool installed? Have you or your friends ever dealt with this before?

Thanks.

Do you have your XP disc? or one that you can borrow, it needs to be the same version as yours though.
If so you can install it that way.

No, unfortunately I do not. I'm sure I could find one, but when you say that I need the same one, do you mean I need the XP home edition with SP2 or something else? Moreover, what if the cd key is different from that of my computer?

Do you need me to get such a disk or can we do the same thing in a faster manner. It will take me a few days to get such a disk...
