Hi Lori

Your problem doesn't sound like malicious software, more like a hardware/software technical issue

Please update mbam, run full scan with it and post back its report.

Let's have a look at Windows Event Viewer. It might give us a clue as to what is causing these issues

Go to Start > Run - type in eventvwr <Press Enter>

You will see Application, Security & System listed in the left pane.
  • In the left pane click on Application.
  • Click the gray title "Type" at the top of the source name column in the right pane to sort by type name
  • Look for "Error" & double-click on the most recent 10, and evaluate the event description for any indication of the cause of the problem.
  • Make note of the Description, EventID and Source of these Event Properties.
  • From the right pane, doubleclick on the line where it says error & you should get a window like the example below:
  • Image
  • In the upper right corner of this picture, you should see 2 arrows. One is pointing up & the other, pointing down.
  • There is another button below the 2 arrows. Click once on it. (this will copy some information to clipboard)
  • Open notepad & paste the info in there. This will copy the event information to the clipboard. Paste the information for each event here

Please reply with
the Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Log
the event.log

Hi there,
Well, I can no longer update Malwarebytes or access their Website. I tried to get the update manually from my husband's computer, but his won't do it either. I know his computer is also infected. However, he tells me that when he connects his computer to the Internet at his office, he can update his security software; it's only at home that he can't update. I will attempt to get the update file when I'm at work tomorrow, and and see if I can bring it home on a thumb drive or CD.

Also, after a few days of pop-ups being gone, they have returned.

Here is the Malwarebytes log:

I checked the event viewer, and nothing really jumped out at me, but here is the most common error:

Event Type: Error
Event Source: .NET Runtime
Event Category: None
Event ID: 0
Date: 10/10/2008
Time: 2:01:18 AM
User: N/A
Computer: COMPUTER
Description:
The description for Event ID ( 0 ) in Source ( .NET Runtime ) cannot be found. The local computer may not have the necessary registry information or message DLL files to display messages from a remote computer. You may be able to use the /AUXSOURCE= flag to retrieve this description; see Help and Support for details. The following information is part of the event: .NET Runtime version 1.0.3705.288- SLD7.tmp - Common Language Runtime Debugging Services: Application has generated an exception that could not be handled.

Process id=0xb58 (2904), Thread id=0xf5c (3932).

Click OK to terminate the application.
Click CANCEL to debug the application..

Not sure that's it, but this error occurs often in the event log, as do my video crashes.

Also, while Malwarebytes was scanning, my antivirus (Avira) had a detection. Here is the report of that event:

Virus or unwanted program 'HTML/Malicious.ActiveX.Gen [virus]'
detected in file 'C:\Documents and Settings\Mom\Application Data\GlarySoft\Glary Utilities\Backups\39850.3994652315.
Action performed: Move file to quarantine

Hi Lori

1 - Scan With ComboFix

Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running the tool:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

* Ensure you have disabled all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

How to Temporarily Disable Anti-virus

Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply for further review.

2 - Run Hijackthis
Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad

3 - Status Check
Please reply with

1. the ComboFix log(C:\ComboFix.txt)
2. a fresh HijackThis log

Hi Lori

It sounds like a case of Zlob/DNSchanger that change the router's DNS settings

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Open Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Select the Update tab
  • Click Check for Updates
  • After the update have been completed, Select the Scanner tab.
  • Make sure the "Perform full scan" option is selected.
  • Then click on the Scan button.
  • If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button
  • The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
  • When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
  • Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
Back at the main Scanner screen:
  • Click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to restart your computer. (see Note below)
  • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • The log can also be found here:

    C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\mbam-log-date (time).txt
  • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.

Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

===============================================

Next you must reset the router to its default configuration. This can be done by inserting something tiny like a paper clip end or pencil tip into a small hole labeled "reset" located on the back of the router. Press and hold down the small button inside until the lights on the front of the router blink off and then on again (usually about 10 seconds). If you don’t know the router's default password, you can look it up HERE

Change the router's default password after reset to prevent reinfection. This is especially important if the router is wireless.

However, if there are other Zlob-infected machines using the same router, they will need to be cleared with the above steps before resetting the router. Otherwise, the malware will simply go back and change the router's DNS settings. You also need to reconfigure any security settings you had in place prior to the reset. Check out this site here for video tutorials on how to properly configure your router's encryption and security settings. You may also need to consult with your Internet service provider to find out which DNS servers your network should be using.

Once you have ran Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware on the infected system, and reset the router to its default configuration you can reconnect to the internet, and router. Then return to this site to post your logs.

Please post the Malwarebytes log and let me know how things are running now.

Hi Lori
Is my computer cured?

Looking good :)
Let's make sure we got everything

1 - Kaspersky Online Scan

Please go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.

  1. Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  2. It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
  3. When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
  4. Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
      Archives
      Mail databases
  5. Click on My Computer under Scan.
  6. Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
  7. You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
  8. Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
  9. Please post this log in your next reply.

2 - Run Hijackthis
Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad

3 - Status Check
Please reply with

1. the Kaspersky online scanner report
2. a fresh HijackThis log

Thanks peku006

Ran the Kaspersky scan. Unfortunately, the problem with my video kicked in when I was saving the scan log file, and I lost it. I can tell you that it found 2 threats, one was a trojan and one was adware, in seven infected items. If you want me to re-run the scan I will, and try to post the log.

Ran Hijackthis. Here's the log:

Hi Lori
If you want me to re-run the scan I will, and try to post the log.

Yes please, otherwise I do not know if we need to delete something

Hi,
Computer is running good. No apparent problems, other than my video issues. I uninstalled and re-installed my video driver. That has helped some. No video crashes when the computer is sitting idle now, but will still crash if I open too many browser tabs (3+). Did some investigating on other forums, and this is happening to other people as well with this driver. Maybe it's a RAM issue? I only have 256K. Planning to upgrade to 2 gigs soon.

Emptied the Outlook Express deleted items folder, as directed.

Deleted the file as directed.

Ran HijackThis, and fixed the three items per your directions.

Here is a fresh HijackThis log:

Hi Lori
The scans are fine and it looks like your machine is clean

Now lets uninstall ComboFix:

  • Click START then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

Disable and Enable System Restore-WINDOWS XP
This is a good time to clear your existing system restore points and establish a new clean restore point:

Turn off System Restore
  • On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
  • Click Properties.
  • Click the System Restore tab.
  • Check Turn off System Restore.
  • Click Apply, and then click OK.
  • Reboot.
Turn ON System Restore
  • On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
  • Click Properties.
  • Click the System Restore tab.
  • UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
  • Click Apply, and then click OK.
This will remove all restore points except the new one you just created.

Here are some free programs I recommend that could help you improve your computer's security.

Spybot Search and Destroy 1.6
Download it from here. Just choose a mirror and off you go.
Find here the tutorial on how to use Spybot properly here

Install SpyWare Blaster 4.0
Download it from here
Find here the tutorial on how to use Spyware Blaster here

Install WinPatrol
Download it from here
Here you can find information about how WinPatrol works here

Install FireTrust SiteHound
