Help! warning messages everywhere i go!

Unread postby pgbud » February 5th, 2009, 2:06 pm

Hi,

My system has been infected with some virus that turned off my task manager and has also changed my desktop background to a black screen with a warning message. When i open firefox it other mozilla pop-ups will open but remain blank. Also, it just started displaying messages on every page in my browser, such as "warning your system is in danger. your computer is in need of full scanning." I have scanned and removed many suspicious files but the problem persists. Here is my file log from hijackthis:

Hello pgbud and welcome to the forums.

Please do not run any other programs with out my permission !!
Run all programs in the order posted !!!!!

My name is flashh4 and I will be helping you to remove any infection(s) that you may have.

Please observe these rules while we work:

1. If you don't know, stop and ask! Don't keep going on.
2. Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
3. Please continue to respond until I give you the "All Clear"
(Just because you can't see a problem doesn't mean it isn't there)
4. Please note you'll need to have Administrator privileges to perform the fixes. (XP accounts are Administrator by default)
5. Please let me know if you are using a computer with multiple accounts, as this can affect the instructions given.
6. Please post all request .......... not as a Attachment.

If you can do those things, everything should go smoothly.

Please note that all instructions given are customised for this computer only, the tools used may cause damage if used on a computer with different infections.

If you think you have similar problems, please post a log in the HJT forum and wait for help.

Note: I am still in training at Malware Removal, however I will be working under the direct supervision of one of our Malware Experts. Any recommendations will first be approved before being given to you. Because of this, there may be a short delay in getting our responses to you, however be assured that we will be working diligently on your problem.

I will be back as soon as possible with a fix !!
In the mean time can you give me an Uninstall list please !!

  1. Open HijackThis.
  2. Click on the Open the Misc Tools section button.
  3. Look under System tools.
  4. Click on the Open Uninstall Manager... button.
  5. Click on the Save list... button.
  6. It will prompt you to save. Save this log in a convenient location. By default it's named uninstall_list.txt.
  7. Notepad will open. Please post this log in your next reply.

*Notes*
1. It would be very helpful if you informed me of which Antivirus and Firewall you are running or if it's disabled.
2. There is a 5 day limit which you must respond to this topic or it will be closed. Then you will have to start a new topic.

Thanks
Chuck

Hello pgbud, there seems to be a problem with your system receiving updates, i need you to run Microsoft's MGA Diagnostic tool and post its log.
1. Download http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012 to your desktop.
2. Double-click on MGADiag.exe to launch the program
3. Click "Continue"
4. Ensure that the "Windows" tab is selected (it should be by default).
5. Click the "Copy" button to copy the MGA Diagnostic Report to the Windows clipboard.
6. Paste the MGA Diagnostic Report back here in your next reply.

Thanks

I'm actually not sure about that. Everytime i try to get them it says I can't for some reason. I tried the troubleshooting option on the microsoft website to no avail. That was something I was hoping to get figured out along with the spyware and pop-up problem.

Hi pgbud, we have a big problem here and its about you not having any "Updates from MS".
As i stated before you need the updates to patch security holes that are open for all kinds of problems.
With out them it would be useless to clean your computer because you would become reinfected in no time at all.

Also this >> Windows XP SP1 which you are running is another reason you are infected, new updates for XP systems with only SP1 installed have not been available since October of 2006. This will continue to be unless you get every update and Service Packs that has been released for XP, they offer free support service for problems with updates.

I have discussed your situation with my Teacher and we cannot clean your computer because we would be just wasting our time, yours and mine.

There are 2 things i suggest you do.
1. A reformat and reinstallation of the OS may very likely resolve your updating issues as well as getting rid of all the malware on the system.

2. I would also contact MS and find out why you cannot get any updates. They have a free support service for people who are having troubles with updates.

I wish i could be of more assistance in ridding you of the infections but without the updates and the service packs updated its impossible for me to continue.

I hope you understand our position.

Due to lack of response, this topic is now closed.

If you still require help, please open a new thread in the Infected? Virus, malware, adware, ransomware, oh my! forum, include a fresh FRST log, and wait for a new helper.
