Laptop has massive problems

Unread postby thesheetsfamily » February 10th, 2009, 12:43 am

My laptop is seriously possessed. It started with some program called Spyware Doctor 2009 magically appearing. I'm not sure how to be honest, I have a firewall and Avast Anti-virus which updates every day. But nonetheless, it appeared. It started with telling me EVERY site I went to was a virus, and wouldn't let me past trying to fool me into paying for their "removal" software. I downloaded a Malware Removal Bot, and it found the Spyware program, and removed it. But I suppose the residual damage is still there because my laptop just has issues. Internet explorer and Firebox both shut down anytime I try to search for something or login into a site. I'm posting this from my desktop, because whatever is eating my laptop wouldn't allow me to log on. I'm currently running the Malware Removal Bot, and no Anti-Spyware...because the laptop won't let me download it. I forgot to mention, the Malware removal I downloaded...was the third attempt at getting something. My laptop wouldn't allow me to download anything, and somehow that program overrode the laptop eating monster. I'm...FRUSTRATED!

Here is my HiJackThis log from the laptop:

welcome to malwareremoval forums

My name is Dan, and I will be helping you to remove any infection(s) that you may have.

Please note! that all instructions given are customised for this computer only, the tools used may cause damage if used on a computer with different infections.

Please observe these rules while we work:
  • Perform all actions in the order given.
  • If you don't know, stop and ask! Don't keep going on.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
  • Stick with it till you're given the all clear.
  • REMEMBER, ABSENCE OF SYMPTOMS DOES NOT MEAN THE INFECTION IS ALL GONE.
If you can do these things, everything should go smoothly.
  • Please note you'll need to have Administrator priviledges to perform the fixes. (XP accounts are Administrator by default)
  • Please let me know if you are using a computer with multiple accounts, as this can affect the instructions given.

Unless informed of in advance, failure to post replies within 5 days will result in this thread being closed.

It may be helpful to you to print out or take a copy of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

Installed Programs

Please could you give me a list of the programs that are installed.
  • Start HijackThis
  • Click on the Misc Tools button
  • Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.
You will see a list with the programs installed in your computer.

Remove P2P programs - MalWare Removal has a policy on P2P programs installed:

Use of P2P (Person to Person) file sharing programs

We have noticed that most people seeking help from us are coming with infections contracted from the use of P2P programs.

Because of this, we felt we needed to change our policy on the use of P2P file sharing programs.
  • If your helper detects the presence of such programs on your computer he/she will ask you to remove them. We will withdraw our help should you not agree to their removal.

  • If we clean your computer of infection, and you return to us a short time later with an infection contracted by the use of P2P programmes, we will refuse our help.

We do not ask you to do this without reason.

P2P programs form a direct conduit onto your computer, their security measures are easily circumvented, and Malware writers are increasingly exploiting them to spread their wares onto your computer. Further to that, if your P2P programme is not configured correctly you may be sharing more files than you realise. There have been cases where people's Passwords, Address Books and other personal, private, and financial details have been exposed to the file sharing network by a badly configured programme.

This article from InfoWorld illustrates perfectly the dangers of a poorly configured P2P program.
http://www.infoworld.com/article/07/09/06/Seattle-man-arrested-for-p-to-p-ID-theft_1.html

Many of the programs come bundled with other unwanted programs, but even the ones free of any bundled software are not safe to use.

When you use them you are downloading software from an unknown source directly onto your computer, bypassing your Firewall and Anti-Virus software. Hardly surprising then that many of these Downloads are being targeted to carry infections.

We see no purpose in cleaning your machine if you use P2P programs, as it is pretty much certain that if you continue to use them then you will get infected again.

You have the following P2P program(s) installed:
LimeWire

This is how you uninstall it/them:

  • Click Start
  • Go to Control Panel
  • Go to Add/Remove Programs
  • Find and click Remove for the following (if present):

    LimeWire

Note: Take care when answering any questions posed by an uninstaller. Some questions may be worded to deceive you into keeping the program.

-----------------

Highjackthis.exe needs a permanant folder of it's own in order to create backups
Create a folder on the desktop, right click on the desktop, select new folder, and name it HJT Now locate HiJackThis.exe
copy and paste it into the new folder ( HJT ) you created on the desktop.
Do this before you continue.

Start > Run, type appwiz.cpl and click OK.

Uninstall the following:

MalwareRemovalBot

Now close Control Panel.

See here!

Run HijackThis, select Do a system scan only and place checks against the following entries (if they are still present)

R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://us.rd.yahoo.com/customize/ie/def ... earch.html

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file)

--------------------------------

I see your running ccleaner, can you set it up as below and do a scan.

Open CCleaner if it's not already running.
( Do not use the Registry block to clean anything with this program. It is for experts only and it is risky).
  • Select Cleaner Settings.
Check Internet Explorer, Windows Explorer, and System so that all items are checked. In the Advanced section, have a check only on Old PreFetch Data.
  • Click on the Options block on the left. Select Advanced.
Uncheck Only delete files in Windows Temp folders older than 48 hours.
  • Set Cookie Retention.
Click on the Options block on the left, then choose Cookies.
Under the Cookies to delete pane, highlight any cookies you would like to retain permanently (those companies or sites with which you regularly visit or do business), and click the right arrow > to move them to the Cookies to keep pane.
  • Run Cleaning Scan. Click on the Cleaner block on the left. Choose the Windows tab.
Click the Run Cleaner button. This process could take a while. When CCleaner shows how much has been removed, cleaning is finished.

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Image
Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.
When finished, it will produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log.

LimeWire and MalwareRemovalBot have both been uninstalled.

A folder was created for HiJackThis on my desktop.

I setup and ran CCleaner per your instructions

The files you had me check in HiJackThis were removed

I was able to download ComboFix. However, whatever this is on my laptop won't allow me to run it. That's the same problem I had when trying to install Malware Removal software. Nothing would install. MalwareRemovalBot finally did, and seemingly cleaned the problem, but clearly not completely. And of course that software is now gone. But this...whatever...will not allow me to run ComboFix. I even rebooted into safe mode and tried to install, it didn't work.

Here is a fresh HiJackThis log:

Click the Windows 'Start' button > Select 'Run' - then copy/paste this into the run box & click OK: (assuming ComboFix.exe is on the desktop as was instructed)

"%userprofile%\desktop\combofix.exe"

See how that goes, remember to disable antivirus program!

Yes, I saved it to the desktop as instructed.

I tried that, and just as before it brought it up to run it, but won't actually run. I also made sure that my anti-virus was disabled. It still won't work. :(

Open Task Manager by pressing the Ctrl Alt and Del keys, at the same time.

In the menu at the top of the dialog box, click File>New Task (Run...)

Copy/paste (or type) the following in the Run box and click OK

"%userprofile%\desktop\combofix.exe"

Looking at your uninstall list you have "Norton Internet Security" also on the system. Can you disable also your firewall.
I will send you a tool to deal with removing norton, for now disable it.
Then try running as you first tried to.

Remove Norton.
Download and save Norton Removal Tool to your desktop.

Run it to remove Norton. After this, please restart your computer.
Then try combofix :)

I didn't even realize Norton was on there. Nonetheless, it's gone now.

Firewall disabled. Anti-virus disabled. Rebooted. Tried running ComboFix again...now it seems to have gotten worse.

Before, the "run" option would at least come up, and I'd click it only for nothing to happen. NOW, the "run" option won't even come up. :pale:
