Please note that all instructions given are customised for this computer only, the tools used may cause damage if used on a computer with different infections.

If you think you have similar problems, please post a log in the HJT forum and wait for help.

Hi DistantStart and welcome to Malware Removal :)

I'm Dakeyras and I am going to try to assist you with your problem. Please take note of the below:

  • I will start working on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine!.
  • The process is not instant. Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine is clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • If you don't know, stop and ask! Don't keep going on.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
  • Refrain from running self fixes as this will hinder the malware removal process.
  • It may prove beneficial if you print of the following instructions or save them to notepad as I post them.
  • Your security programs may give warnings for some of the tools I will ask you to use. Be assured, any links I give are safe.

Extra note: Please be aware as I am still in training all of my fixes/posts require prior checking by a Expert. So some delays may be inevitable, please be patient and I will reply again asap.

Next:

In the interim I would like to view a list of currently installed software applications on you're PC. How to provide as follows:

Start/Run HijackThis and click on Open the Misc Tools section:

  • Click Open Uninstall Manager...
  • Click Save list... and save it to your Desktop.
  • Copy and paste the file uninstall_list.txt into your next reply.

Hi :)

I see nothing overtly suspicious in the HijackThis log, what makes you think your computer is infected ? Any symptoms, strange behavior at all ?

Next:

No need for yourself to provide the uninstall_list.txt I requested in my prior post as part of the logs requested in a application I will be asking you to download and scan with shortly will provide similar information.

Disable Spybot's TeaTimer:

We need to disable the registry guard feature of the aforementioned otherwise it may hinder the malware removal process:

This is a two step process.

First step:
  • Right-click the Spybot Icon in the System Tray (looks like a blue/white calendar with a padlock symbol)
  • If you have the older version 1.4, Click on Exit Spybot S&D Resident
  • If you have the new version 1.5, Click once on Resident Protection, then Right click the Spybot icon again and make sure Resident Protection is now Unchecked. The Spybot icon in the System tray should now be now colorless.
Second step, For Either Version :
  • Open Spybot S&D
  • Click Mode, choose Advanced Mode
  • Go To the bottom of the Vertical Panel on the Left, Click Tools
  • then, also in left panel, click Resident (shows a red/white shield).
  • If your firewall raises a question, say OK
  • In the Resident protection status frame, Uncheck the box labeled Resident "Tea-Timer"(Protection of over-all system settings) active
  • OK any prompts.
  • Use File, Exit to terminate Spybot
  • Reboot your machine for the changes to take effect.

Next:

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

Alternative download link.

  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please post that log in your next reply.
The log can also be found here:
  1. Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  2. Click on the Logs radio tab.

Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process, if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediatly.

Next:

  • Please download Random's System Information Tool by random/random from here and save it to your desktop.
Please make sure that RSIT.exe is on the your Desktop before running the application.
  • Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • Once it has finished, two logs will open:
    • log.txt will be opened maximized.
    • info.txt will be opened minimized.
  • Please post the contents of both log.txt and info.txt.

When completed the above, please post back the following:

  • Any symtoms? strange behaviour at all? and or problems ecountered?
  • Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Log.
  • Both RSIT Logs.

Re: Infected?

Unread postby Dakeyras » February 9th, 2009, 5:31 pm

Hi :)

No real odd behavior to speak of but various scanners/antivirus programs keep finding (& supposedly eliminating the same virus/trojan). I think it shows up yet again here in the MalWareBytes log...

Thank you for informing myself, we will address this shortly.

Administrative Changes Query:

Have you changed the settings for access to the Control Panel, Internet Explorer and Toolbars either yourself manually. Or via Spybots Home Page and Option Lock down features ?

Trusted Zone Advice:

You really should not have any website in the Trusted Zone of Internet Explorer. The reason being the default security settings in the Trusted Zone are set too low, which makes it unsafe. Plus it should not be necessary for any remote server to have that level of access. Plenty of good & reputable sites get hacked to host malware; advertising networks are renowned for serving malware which can appear on any site. The best policy is to remove anything from the Trusted Zone unless it's absolutely required in order for the site to work & you trust that site implicitly.

We will also address this shortly.

Backup the Registry:

Modifying the Registry can create unforeseen problems, so it always wise to create a backup before doing so.

  • Please go here and download erunt-setup.exe to the Desktop.
  • ERUNT (Emergency Recovery Utility NT) is a free program that allows you to keep a complete backup of your registry and restore it when needed.
  • Double click on erunt-setup.exe to install ERUNT by following the prompts.
  • Use the default install settings but say no to the portion that asks you to add ERUNT to the Start-Up folder. You can enable this option later if you wish.
  • Start ERUNT either by double clicking on the desktop icon or choosing to start the program at the end of the setup process.
  • Choose a location for the backup. Note: the default location is C:\WINDOWS\ERDNT which is acceptable.
  • Make sure that at least the first two check boxes are selected.
  • Click on OK
  • Then click on YES to create the folder.

Next:

Please download OTMoveIT3 to your Desktop.

  • Double-click OTMoveIt3.exe to start the program.
  • Copy the lines from the codebox to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + B (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose Copy):

Code: Select all
:Reg

:Commands
[EmptyTemp]
[Reboot]
  • Return to OTMoveIt3, right-click in the "Paste instructions for items to be moved" window (under the yellow bar) and choose Paste
  • Then click the red MoveIt! button.
  • Copy everything in the Results window (under the green bar) to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of it and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose Copy), and paste it into your next response.
  • If OTMoveIt asks to reboot your computer, allow it to do so. The report should appear in Notepad after the reboot.
  • Close OTMoveIt3.

Next:

Please make sure that RSIT.exe is still on the Desktop.(If not inform myself straight away please)

  • Double click once on RSIT.exe
  • RSIT will start running, at the disclaimer click on Continue.
  • When done, 1 log will be produced.
  • Post that in your next reply.

When completed the above, please post back the following:

  • How is your computer performing now ? Any problems encountered ?
  • Answer to my Administrative Changes Query.
  • OTMoveIT3 Log.
  • A new RSIT Log.

Yes, sorry I do still need help. As far as I know, I have not changed the settings for access to the Control panel, IE or toolbars, at least I do not recall doing it. Will re-examine the trusted zone sites, there are a couple there which need to be there but will look at the others. Will get back shortly with the newest logs.

Thanks

Re: Infected?

Unread postby Dakeyras » February 11th, 2009, 3:47 pm

Hi :)

I have not changed the settings for access to the Control panel, IE or toolbars

Fine, thank you for informing myself we will address this.

Will re-examine the trusted zone sites, there are a couple there which need to be there but will look at the others.

Trust myself please, as I have already explained absolutely no need for any any sites to be in the Trusted Zone for the reasons I explained in a prior post. End of the day all you are doing is leaving a potential back-door open for malware to reinfect your system.

Thanks

You're welcome!

Fix-Policies:

Please download FixPolicies.exe, a self-extracting ZIP archive, and save it to your Desktop from here.

  • Double-click FixPolicies.exe.
  • Click the "Install" button on the bottom toolbar of the box that will open.
  • The program will create a new Folder called FixPolicies
  • Double-click to Open the new Folder, and then double-click the file within: Fix_Policies.cmd.
  • A black box will briefly appear and then close.

Next:

Please re-open HiJackThis and select Scan. Check the box next to the entry listed below (if present):

O13 - DefaultPrefix:

Now click on Fix Checked. Close HiJackThis.

Next:

Now Reboot(restart) your computer. <--- This is a important step please make sure you do Reboot.

DelDomains:

  • Right click Here and select Save Target As... to download WinHelp2002's DelDomains.inf.
  • Please save the file to the the Desktop.
  • To run the inf file, right click on it and select Install.

Next:

Please go to the Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.

  • Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  • It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
  • When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
  • Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
      Archives
      Mail databases
  • Click on My Computer under Scan.
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
  • You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
  • Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
  • Please post this log in your next reply.

This online tuturial will help explain how to use the aforementioned online scan.

Next:

Please make sure that RSIT.exe is still on the Desktop.(if not inform myself straight away please)

  • Double click once on RSIT.exe
  • RSIT will start running, at the disclaimer click on Continue.
  • When done, 1 log will be produced.
  • Post that in your next reply

When completed the above, please post back the following:

  • How is you computer performing now, any other symptoms?
  • Kaspersky results.
  • A new RSIT Log.

Re: Infected?

Unread postby Dakeyras » February 12th, 2009, 8:06 am

Hi,

I have bad news unfortunately regarding my recent research of the last set of logs you provided :(

One or more of the identified infections is a Very Severe Back-Door Infection.

This allows hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and Download and Execute files.

I would counsel you to disconnect this PC from the Internet immediately. If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.

Although an attempt could be made to clean this machine, it could never be considered to be truly clean, secure, or trustworthy. We could not say definitively that unknown and unseen malware will have been removed, nor will your system be restored to its pre-infection state. We cannot remedy unknown changes the malware may likely have made in order to allow itself access, nor can we repair the damage it may possibly have caused to vital system files. Additionally, it is quite possible that changes made to the system by the malware may impact negatively on your computer during the removal process. In short, your system may never regain its former stability or its full functionality without a reformat. Therefore, your best and safest course of action is a reformat and reinstallation of the Windows operating system, and that is the course we strongly recommend.

Please read these for more information:

How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud?

When Should I Format, How Should I Reinstall

I can attempt to clean this machine but I can't guarantee that it will be at all secure afterwords.

Should you have any questions, please feel free to ask.

Please let myself know what you have decided to do in your next post.

What about my backup drive? I have a 2nd hard drive that I mirror the contents of My Documents folder to, is it compromised as well? If so, is there any way to backup my documents safely so that they can later be restored to my computer?

Hi :)

What about my backup drive? I have a 2nd hard drive that I mirror the contents of My Documents folder to, is it compromised as well?

There is no indication the second Hard-Drive is infected however this does not mean it is not compromised either. Is it a internal Hard-Drive or external ? if the latter we can disinfect it otherwise it would be best to format that also in my opinion.

If so, is there any way to backup my documents safely so that they can later be restored to my computer?

As it stands it is most likely your Documents folder is compromised especially the Microsoft Outlook Personal Folders file were the main infection resides:

C:\Documents and Settings\User Name\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook\Outlook.pst <--- This is badly compromised/infected

Because of the nature of this infection I would not trust absolutely anything on your computer including the backup drive as you could very well carry out a Re-Format/Re-Installation and then infect the system all over again.

My own backups I keep on a combination of a external Hard-Drive, CD R's, USB sticks and Zip disc's plus I also regularly save a backup of the registry with Erunt and store that on one of the aforementioned removable media. So I always have multiple backups if either one becomes corrupt and or fails.

I also use NTBackup, a tutorial can be read below:

How to install NTBACKUP for XP Home

I would never keep keep any backups on a extra internal Hard-Drive as always the chance it could become infected and thus render that source of back-ups untrustworthy.

I assure you the best course of action to take, is to wipe the system completely and start again and just put it down to a bad experience but hopefully one learned from. Especially the importance of keeping all Operating System/Software and Security Applications up to date, as there is indication this severe infection found a back-door because your Microsoft Office installation is missing some critical updates.

Being totally honest if this was one of my computers I would no doubt be feeling the exasperation you are currently experiencing but would not hesitate to so.

Especially since both my wife and I use online-banking this is even more so a prudent course of action.

Reformat & Reinstall Advice:

Since you decided to do a clean install read the information below.

Please make sure that you know what to do before beginning the operation.

Here are a few links that probably help.
You can Print all these information, so you have them handy.

Then there are a couple of things you should do immediately after installing Windows and before surfing the net...
  • Use an Anti Virus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.
Here are some free Anti Virus programs which I recommend to use:
    • Antivir PersonalEditionClassic
      • Free anti-virus software for Windows.
      • Detects and removes more than 50,000 viruses. Free support.
    • avast! 4 Home Edition
        • Anti-virus program for Windows.
        • The home edition is freeware for noncommercial users.
    • Update your Anti Virus Software - It is imperative that you update your Anti virus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your anti virus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.
    • Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.
Here are some free Firewalls which i recommend to use:
(Use only one, and disable your Windows Firewall)
  • Keep your system updated-Microsoft releases patches for Windows and other products regularly:
  • Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
    • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
    • Click once on the Security tab
    • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
    • Click once on the Custom Level button.
      • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
      • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
      • Change the Initialise and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
      • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
      • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
      • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
      • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
      • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
    • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
  • Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware - Download it from here
The tutorial on how to MBAM is located here
  • Install WinPatrol - Download it from here
You can find information about how WinPatrol works here
  • Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.
    Download it from here
The tutorial on how to use Spyware Blaster is located here
  • Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

Good Luck! :) If any questions do not hesitate to ask OK
