Hi Mandy, did you set a new "System Restore Point" as i posted in the instructions above ??
Then run the Avast scan after ??
I don't need the old ones [scans].

Those show that they are still in the System Restore and will be gone after a new "System Restore Point" is created.

Let me know about the Questions i have asked.

Thanks
Chuck

Hi Chuck,

Yes I did set a new system restore point, I followed your instructions exactly and rebooted after every change and before I scanned again.

Thanks,

Mandy.

Hi Mandy, lets do this another way. Lets remove Spybot completely.
You can reinstall it later if you wish.

Open HijackThis, click do a system scan only and checkmark this:

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [SpybotSD TeaTimer] C:\Program Files\Spybot - Search & Destroy\TeaTimer.exe

Close all windows including browser and press fix checked.

Reboot.

NEXT

Reset System Restore Points
  • Click Start > Help and Support
  • Click on ->Undo changes to your computer with System Restore.
  • Click Create A Restore Point then click Next. Give it a name it and then click Create, then Close.
  • Close Help and Support Center.
  • Click Start | Run and type Cleanmgr
  • Select (C: ) then click OK.
  • Click the More Options tab.
  • Click Clean Up in the System Restore Section.
This will remove all previous restore points except the newly created one.
This System Restore sequence is not to be done regularly, but only as a Special Case after the removal of malware.

Then post new HJT log and then run another scan with Avast and post the report or inform me if it found anything.

Thanks
Chuck

Hi Chuck,

I have done everything you asked so hopefully this will work. I have been reading about the datakiwee toolbar and apparently it's very difficult to get rid of! It must have come in through messenger when my daughters were still at home and using it regularly.

Here is my Hijack This Log.

Thanks again.

Mandy.

Hi chuck,

Am running a scan, I know I shouldn't be on-line but really it's just to let you know that Avast has so far found 2 viruses, I know that one of them is in the system restore but I don't understand how that can be possible. I deleted all the restore points except the new one made this morning!

Will post scan results when it's finished.

Thanks,

Mandy.

Hi Chuck,

I have done a search to try to find this datakiwee toolbar, I just typed in Kiwee and the search found a document named C:OTMoveit/moved files. This file is also in the registry. I have posted the notepad document to see if you have any ideas.

Thanks,

Mandy.

Hi Mandy, i think i found the solution to these files.

Remove Programs Using Control Panel
From Start, Settings, Control Panel or Start, Control Panel, click Add/Remove Programs.
Highlight each Entry, as follows, one by one, if it exists, and choose Remove :

Spybot S&D

Reboot the machine
-----------------------------------------------------------
Using My Computer, doubleclick C:
Doubleclick Documents and Settings
Doubleclick mandy
Doubleclick Local Settings
If you see a file or folder named Application DataKiweeToolbar1.3.118.msi then highlight it and press the Delete key.
This is not the same as a legitimate folder named Application Data

Then run the Avast scan and post a new HJT log.

Thanks
Chuck

Hi Chuck,

Well done for sussing out how to find the datakiwee, I searched all those files yesterday. Why did uninstalling Spybot bring it out into the open so to speak?

 I have scanned again with Avast and today I have 3 viruses!!! Can it be that Avast is making things up as it goes along and do you think changing my anti-virus provider would make a difference? After all it doesn't seem able to stop things coming in and when they do it can't get rid of them.

Anyway here are the logs:

~Thanks again, I don't know what I would do without you :)

Re: WINDOWS SYSTEM32 VIRUS

Unread postby flashh4 » February 11th, 2009, 9:03 am

Hi Mandy, lets see if this does the trick. Right click the recycle bin on your desktop and choose "Empty recycle Bin".
-----------------------------------------------------------
Reset System Restore Points
  • Click Start > Help and Support
  • Click on ->Undo changes to your computer with System Restore.
  • Click Create A Restore Point then click Next. Give it a name it and then click Create, then Close.
  • Close Help and Support Center.
  • Click Start | Run and type Cleanmgr
  • Select (C: ) then click OK. (You may have to wait while it analyzes)
  • Click the More Options tab.
  • Click Clean Up in the System Restore Section.
This will remove all previous restore points except the newly created one.
This System Restore sequence is not to be done regularly, but only as a Special Case after the removal of malware.

If they return then its ok, they will be a "false Positive" that we discussed.

.............................

Since you already have Malwarebytes' installed i would keep this valuable tool. I run mine a few times a week to check my computer for anything it may have picked up.
You can continue to manually update and use MBAM as an on demand scanner.
There is also an upgrade to the paid version.
Instructions on use:
Click/open Malwarebytes' on your desk top, click the Update tab, click the box check for updates, use the option "perform quick scan".
# When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
# Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected

Congratulation you are clean !!!

Next we remove all used tools.
You may delete the RSIT and RSIT EXE.

This is a good time to clear your existing system restore points and establish a new clean restore point:

* Go to Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore
* Select Create a restore point then Next, type a name like All Clean, press the Create button. Once it's finished, press Close.
* Next, go to Start > Run and type in cleanmgr and press OK.
* Select the More options tab.
* Choose the option to clean up system restore and OK it.

This will remove all restore points except the new one you just created.

  • Disable and Enable System Restore. - If you are using Windows XP or Vista then you should disable and re-enable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point.

You can find instructions on how to enable and re-enable system restore here:

    Windows XP System Restore Guide

Re-enable system restore with instructions from tutorial above

    • Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
    • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
    • Click once on the Security tab
    • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
    • Click once on the Custom Level button.
    • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
    • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
    • Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
    • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
    • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
    • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
    • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
    • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
    • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

    • Update your AntiVirus Software and keep your other programs up-to-date
Update your Antivirus programs and other security products regularly to avoid new threats that could infect your system.
You can use one of these sites to check if any updates are needed for your pc.
      Secunia Software Inspector
      F-secure Health Check

    • Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://update.microsoft.com/windowsupda ... ankspage=5 regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

    • Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware

    • Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

Here are some additional utilities that will enhance your safety

The site offers people who have been (or are) victims of malware the opportunity to document their story and, in that way, launch a complaint against the malware and the makers of the malware.

Hi Chuck :king:

:D Thank you so much, you are brilliant!!!

I have done everything you suggested and have been busy since I got in from work at 2pm, it's now 5pm and I have downloaded all the things you advised me to. The scan from Malwarebytes was clear and I have disabled/enabled the system restore and also cleaned and created a new restore point. I had to print the thing about the Hosts File as it seemed a bit in-depth but it is now installed.

As I said before I don't know what I would have done without you and I will pass on details of this forum to my family and friends.

Thanks again and I hope NOT to be in touch soon!!

Mandy.
