Nasty Little Bug

Unread postby loadmaster43 » January 31st, 2009, 9:37 am

A couple of days ago as I was surfing the web, I clicked on a link from a site I was on and it has been non-stop grief since then. I immediately started getting numerous pop-ups saying my computer was infected and I could either continue unprotected or purchase the "cure" and have it removed. I tried xing out of it but that led to further popups, etc, etc... I tried running several scans with antispyware programs including superantispyware, spybot. The most recent was AVG 8.0. They each found things and quarentined them, so I thought. This morning I started up my computer, spybot ran and found pieces of the "bug" again. So it is still in there somewhere. The main culprit seems to be "smitfraud-c". It appears to be software or malware, or a trojan sold by PS Guard? It is said that it installs new desk top wallpaper mimicking a Windows 98 Blue screen. It also says that it installs a desk top icon for PS Guard. I cannot locate that at all. It exists nowhere on my active desk top. A program that seems to be part of that "bug" is MS Antispyware 2009. I did not buy this, have no intention of buying this piece of malware. It is not a legitimate program.

I have noticed that there seems to be a lot of activity or downloads? to the following file:
H:\Docum~\Frank\Locals1~\Temp then there is this string Smitfraud-c: [SBI $73403668] Autorun settings (Registry value, nothing done) and this string: HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-2000478354-1417001333-839522115-1003\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\MSFox this gets identified everytime a scan is run. I hope someone can help me and I have included all that I know up to this point. I do not want to have to reload Windows XP Pro but am facing that almost certain end, so help me please. :x :( I have attached the latest HJT data:

  • Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.
  • Click on the Save list... button and specify where you would like to save this file. When you press Save button a notepad will open with the contents of that file. Save the file to your desktop.

Please post this log on your next reply.

Thank you ahead of time for your help. I realize this may be a long process, but I hope not. One other thing I should mention is that I cannot perform any updates for Windows or from Microsoft. Here is the HJT log, followed by the other list from the task you asked to be performed.

Hi Loadmaster43 :flower:

Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.

Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix but in your case H:\SDFix)

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :

  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
  • Choose your usual account.
  • Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
  • Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
  • It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
  • Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
  • When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
  • Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
(Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).

Next Download and Run: RSIT

  • Download random's system information tool (RSIT) by random/random from here and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • Once it has finished, two logs will open. Please post the contents of both log.txt (<<will be maximized) and info.txt (<<will be minimized)

Please reply with:-
  • SDFix Report
  • RSIT logs (log.txt and info.txt)

I should mention at this point that I cannot seem to reboot in safe mode? I do not know what I may be doing wrong. I have tried F8 and even F5 by themselves as well as with the control button depressed. I have tried Control C but when that screen does manage to come up the up/down, left/right arrows are not operable. I use a Microsoft Wireless Keyboard 6000 v3.0 I don't know if this has any significance.

Ok Lets try this instead

Download and run Combofix
This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.
ComboFix SHOULD NOT be used unless requested by a forum helper

Please download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2
Link 3

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools.
  • If you need help to disable your protection programs see here.
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Image
Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Image
Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.
When finished, it will produce a log for you.
Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply along with a New HijackThis log.

If you need help, see this link:

I'm sorry I have been away for a few days, and expect for a couple of days more and I have not been able to devote the time to correcting my PC problem. In fact I am writing this on my UMPC. I will get back to you by the end of the week, if not sooner. I apologize for the delay. You and the forum have been a great help.

Due to lack of activity, this topic is now closed.

If you still require help, please open a new thread in the Infected? Virus, malware, adware, ransomware, oh my! forum, include a fresh FRST log, and wait for a new helper.
