I'm not 100% sure, but I think it's an executable called SPOOLSV.exe. Perhaps a backdoor?

Anyways, here is my HJT log:

welcome to malwareremoval forums

My name is Dan, and I will be helping you to remove any infection(s) that you may have.

Please note! that all instructions given are customised for this computer only, the tools used may cause damage if used on a computer with different infections.

Please observe these rules while we work:
  • Perform all actions in the order given.
  • If you don't know, stop and ask! Don't keep going on.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
  • Stick with it till you're given the all clear.
  • REMEMBER, ABSENCE OF SYMPTOMS DOES NOT MEAN THE INFECTION IS ALL GONE.
If you can do these things, everything should go smoothly.
  • Please note you'll need to have Administrator priviledges to perform the fixes. (XP accounts are Administrator by default)
  • Please let me know if you are using a computer with multiple accounts, as this can affect the instructions given.

Unless informed of in advance, failure to post replies within 5 days will result in this thread being closed.

It may be helpful to you to print out or take a copy of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

Installed Programs

Please could you give me a list of the programs that are installed.
  • Start HijackThis
  • Click on the Misc Tools button
  • Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.
You will see a list with the programs installed in your computer.
Click on save list button and specify where you would like to save this file.
When you press Save button a notepad will open with the contents of that file.
Simply copy and paste the contents of that notepad into your next post.

When returning your reports can you just paste them into the thread. ( don't use the code box) makes it easier to follow for students.

I'm presently looking over your log and hope not to be too long.
Will be back with you as soon as I can.
Thanks dan

If you already have Smitfraudfix, please delete this copy and download it again as it's being updated regularly.

Please download SmitFraudFix.exe by S!Ri and save it to the desktop.

If you can't download it, please download it from these alternative sites:

From Geekstogo
From Security Cadets
From Zebulon

  1. Right click on SmitfraudFix.exe and select Run As Administrator. If Vista UAC is turned on, you will receive a prompt. Please allow it.
  2. Smitfraudfix will start running. Press 1 then hit the Enter key.
  3. It will create a report named rapport.txt, usually at C drive.
  4. Please post back this log in your next reply.

Note: process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user. Read more here

Re: Infected with an Unknown Virus

Please copy this set of instructions or print it out as you will not have internet access during the fix.

Restart the computer in Safe Mode

:!: Let me know if you can't boot into Safe Mode. Do not continue with the fixes.

  1. When you see the BIOS screen, start pressing F8.
  2. A boot menu will appear shortly.
  3. Using the up down arrows, select Safe Mode and press the Enter key.
  4. Windows will now load.
  5. Log in to your usual account.

Once in Safe Mode, right click on SmitfraudFix.exe and select Run As Administrator. If Vista UAC is turned on, you will receive a prompt. Please allow it.

Smitfraudfix will start running. Press 2 and press Enter to delete infected files.

You will be prompted: Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?; press Y and press Enter in order to start cleaning the cleaning process. Your desktop will be gone for a while cleaning.

The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You will be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); press Y and press Enter.

The tool will restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart manually into Normal Mode.

A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; please copy and paste the contents of that report into your next reply. The report can also be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Note to users: Running option 2 on a clean machine will remove your desktop background.

Unfortunately, I can't get into Safe mode. Looks like this virus isn't going without a fight.

While it's loading all the drivers for safe mode, it gives me a BSOD and just restarts the computer.

Ok, Let me try another tool, we won't be beaten. :)

Download and run Combofix
This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.
ComboFix SHOULD NOT be used unless requested by a forum helper

Please download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2
Link 3

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Image
Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Image
Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.
When finished, it will produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log.

If you need help, see this link:

Post back:

A new HijackThis log.

I followed your instructions, and ComboFix notifies me that I have a rootkit. It tells me to take notes of the 2 following files in bold as it may be useful to the future:

C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\goapdxydebxne.sys
C:\Windows\System32\goapdxyidoesuh.dll

After finding Rootkit in Wikipedia, it says that: "Often, they are Trojans as well, thus fooling users into believing they are safe to run on their systems. Techniques used to accomplish this can include concealing running processes from monitoring programs, or hiding files or system data from the operating system. Rootkits may also install a 'backdoor' in a system by replacing the login mechanism (such as /bin/login) with an executable that accepts a secret login combination which in turn allows an attacker to access the system regardless of changes to the actual accounts on the system."

This really scares me. How can I be positive that my pc is no longer vulnerable?

"Removal
Many hold this to be forbiddingly impractical. Even if the nature and composition of a rootkit is known, the time and effort of a system administrator with the necessary skills or experience would be better spent re-installing the operating system from scratch. Since drive imaging software makes the task of restoring a “clean” OS installation almost trivial, there is no good reason to try to dig a rootkit out directly."

What do you recommend? Also, I don't want to waste too much of your time, so should I just reimage my laptop?

I've not forgot you but had quite a bit of work. I have a little to do on your returned reports as I want to be certain what we are dealing with. :)

Although combo fix has almost dealt with this infection, I need to give you this warning!
You have a rootkit ifection, I guess you were expecting that.

Rootkit. A rootkit is a set of software tools intended for concealing running processes, files or system data from the operating system.

You are strongly advised to do the following:

  • Disconnect the computer from the Internet and from any networked computers until it is cleaned.
  • Back up all your important data except programs. The programs can be reinstalled back from the original disc or from the Net.
  • Call all your banks, financial institutions, credit card companies and inform them that you may be a victim of identity theft and put a watch on your accounts. If you don't mind the hassle, change all your account numbers.
  • From a clean computer, change all your passwords (ISP login password, your email address(es) passwords, financial accounts, PayPal, eBay, Amazon, online groups and forums and any other online activities you carry out which require a username and password).

DO NOT change your passwords from this computer as the attacker will be able to get all the new passwords and transaction records.

Due to its rootkit functionality, your computer is very likely to have been compromised and there is no way that it can be trusted again. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of Trojan, the best course of action would be to do a reformat and reinstallation of the operating system (OS). However, if you do not have the resources to reinstall your OS and would like me to attempt to clean your machine, I will be happy to do so.

To help you understand more, please take some time to read the following articles:

What are rootkits from Wikipedia
Why are rootkits dangerous
How do I respond to a possible identity theft and how do I prevent it
When should do a reformat and reinstallation of my OS
Where to backup your files
How to backup your files in Windows XP
Restoring your backups

Let me know what you decide to do.

Well if it's only a DNS changer trojan variant, then I guess I can continue the clean up process.

P.S: The redirects I had did stop. :)

tahayassen,I have been talking to a few experts regarding this rootkit, "DNS changer trojan variant". Its not as ruthless as the other variants.
so my warning may of been in haste!
We can continue the clean up once I've finished working the log, need some shut eye now ;)
