Just recently I had a nasty virus, which I'm guessing was some form of Smitfraud. I removed a bunch of things with Malwarebytes anti-malware, and everything seems to be running normally. Please check this over though, as I don't want this to come back! Also, if you could tell me specifically how to block sites on firefox, that would be awesome. I believe I got this virus from browsing to sites I shouldn't, so if I block them than it will not be a problem.

This site is full of people who are so helpful and generous, so thank you in advance.

EDIT: I am now getting popups from my desktop/firefox, and they're not from a site. It looks like things are starting to come back...

  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine.
  • I f you don't know or understand something please don't hesitate to ask.
  • Please DO NOT run any other tools or scans whilst I am helping you.
  • It is important that you reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.

Hello!

Here are few links to Firefox and-ons that re usefull:

Adblock Plus 1.0.1
NoScript 1.8.9.7
WOT 20081111

Download and Run ComboFix

We will begin with ComboFix.exe. Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running the tool:

HOW TO USE COMBOFIX

IMPORTANT: combofix.exe MUST be on your Desktop for us to proceed.

Please continue as follows:
  • Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe and follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

NOTE: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Image

  • Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

    Image

  • Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.
  • Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall.

Combofix should never take more that 20 minutes including the reboot if malware is detected.

Optional Fix

Viewpoint Manager is considered as foistware instead of malware since it is installed without user's approval but doesn't spy or do anything bad. This may change, read Viewpoint to Plunge Into Adware.

I recommend that you remove the Viewpoint products; however, decide for yourself.

To uninstall the the Viewpoint components :
  • Click Start
  • Click Control Panel
  • Double-click Add or Remove Programs.
  • In Add or Remove Programs, highlight Viewpoint component, click Remove.

How to prevent it from being recreated every time you run the AOL software:
    • Open AOL
    • Go to Help on the toolbar
    • Select About AOL
    • Hit Ctrl D and a secret panel can be accessed which will allow you to disable all desktop and IM features associated with Viewpoint.

Thanks so much for the reply! I can only imagine how busy you must get.

I've ran ComboFix with no errors, the log will be included along with a fresh HijackThis.

No popups yet, though I do know that doesn't mean everything's all clean just yet.

Oh and I also removed the Viewpoint Media Player, and I don't use AOL so that won't be a problem.

Run CFScript

  • Close any open browsers.
  • Open Notepad by click start
  • Click Run
  • Type notepad into the box and click enter
  • Notepad will open
  • Copy and Paste everything from the Code box into Notepad:

Code: Select all
Folder::
c:\windows\SmltbXk
c:\windows\owrf
c:\program files\Common Files\owrf
c:\documents and settings\Jimmy\Application Data\Twain
c:\documents and settings\Jimmy\Application Data\uTorrent
c:\documents and settings\All Users\Application Data\Viewpoint
c:\documents and settings\Jimmy\Application Data\cogad

File::
c:\windows\system32\qryopdtp.dll
c:\windows\system32\drivers\c45ced07.sys
c:\windows\system32\rn.tmp
c:\windows\system32\XDva186.sys
c:\windows\system32\XDva143.sys
c:\program files\desktoq.ini

Driver::
XDva143
XDva186

RegLock::
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\ControlSet002\Services\c45ced07]

Save this as CFScript.txt, in the same location as ComboFix.exe (on your desktop)

Image

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe

When finished, it shall produce a log for you at C:\ComboFix.txt

NOTE: Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall it.

Using Gmer

Please download Gmer by Gmer and save it to your desktop.

  • Right click on gmer.zip and select Extract All....
  • Click Next on seeing the Welcome to the Compressed (zipped) Folders Extraction Wizard.
  • Click on the Browse button. Click on Desktop. Then click OK.
  • Click Next. It will start extracting.
  • Once done, check (tick) the Show extracted files box and click Finish.
  • Double click on gmer.exe to run it.
  • Select the Rootkit tab.
  • On the right hand side, check all the items to be scanned, but leave Show All box unchecked.
  • Select all drives that are connected to your system to be scanned.
  • Click on the Scan button.
  • When the scan is finished, click Copy to save the scan log to the Windows clipboard.
  • Open Notepad or a similar text editor.
  • Paste the clipboard contents into the text editor.
  • Save the Gmer scan log and post it in your next reply.
  • Close Gmer.
  • Open Command Prompt by going to Start > Run and type in cmd. Press Enter.
  • In Command Prompt, type in net stop gmer. Press Enter.
  • Type in exit to close Command Prompt.

Note: Do not run any programs while Gmer is running.

Re: HJT Log Review Request

Unread postby Jhp » January 31st, 2009, 7:53 pm

I had a few troubles, at least I think, when running Gmer. The scan went fine, and I was able to save a log file. When I followed the directions that included typing "net stop gmer" in the command prompt, I got an error message saying it does not exist. Not sure if this is a direct problem or if it is meant to be like that. Thank you so much for all the help.

Run CFScript

  • Close any open browsers.
  • Open Notepad by click start
  • Click Run
  • Type notepad into the box and click enter
  • Notepad will open
  • Copy and Paste everything from the Code box into Notepad:

Code: Select all
RegLock::
[HKLM\SYSTEM\ControlSet003\Services\TDSSserv.sys]
[HKLM\SYSTEM\controlset004\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}]
[HKLM\SYSTEM\controlset004\Services\MRxDAV]

Save this as CFScript.txt, in the same location as ComboFix.exe (on your desktop)

Image

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe

When finished, it shall produce a log for you at C:\ComboFix.txt

NOTE: Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall it.

ATF-Cleaner

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.

  • Save it to your desktop
  • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
  • Under Main choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.

    If you use Firefox browser
  • Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.

NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords please click No at the prompt.
  • Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Kaspersky Online Scan

Please go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.

Note: If you are using Windows Vista, open your browser by right-clicking on its icon and select 'Run as administrator' to perform this scan.

  • Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  • It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
  • When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
  • Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
    • Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
    • Archives
  • Click on My Computer under Scan.
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
  • You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
  • Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
  • Please post this log in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log.

Hello!

Did you run the Kaspersky Online scan?
If you did run it, did it found anything?
If you didnt, please run it and post the log for me to see.

Remove HijackThis entries

  • Run HijackThis
  • Click on the Scan button
  • Put a check beside all of the items listed below (if present):

    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {d5bf4552-94f1-42bd-f434-3604812c807d} - (no file)

  • Close all open windows and browsers/email etc...
  • Click on the Fix Checked button
  • When completed close the application.

Sorry about that, it must have slipped my mind to do the Kaspersky. The log will be bellow. I also deleted what you asked for on the HJT.

Well wait a minute, when I go to the website for Kaspersky it tells me to enable Javascript, which I already have enabled. It will not run the scan without it. Could you tell me how to enable it completely, or what I'm doing wrong?

Sorry for the trouble

Hello!

Lets run another online scan instead.

Eset online scannner

Note for Vista Users: Eset is compatible but Internet Explorer must be run as Administrator. To do this, right-click on the IE icon in the Start Menu or Quick Launch Bar on the Taskbar and select Run as Administrator from the context menu.

Go here to run an online scannner from ESET.
  • Note: You will need to use Internet explorer for this scan
  • Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use.
  • Click Start
  • When asked, allow the activex control to install
  • Click Start
  • Make sure that the option Remove found threats is unticked, and the option Scan unwanted applications is checked
  • Click Scan
  • Wait for the scan to finish
  • Use notepad to open the logfile located at C:\Program Files\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt
  • Copy and paste that log as a reply to this topic

Haha, seems like my computer really doesn't like online scans. All I see is a big red X, and I've installed the ActivX control. I tried restarting my computer and IE, but still the same thing. Sorry for all this, but I haven't experienced any problems with my computer other than that.

Note: I am NOT a Windows Vista user.

Hello!

Okay....lets try this.

Setting up your ActiveX

Make sure that your Internet security settings are set to default values.

To set default security settings for Internet Explorer:

  • Open Internet Explorer.
  • Go to the Tools menu, then choose Internet Options.
  • Click on the Security tab.
  • Select the Internet zone, then click the Default level button (if available), then repeat for the other three zones Local intranet, Trusted sites & Restricted sites.

Then try to run a ESET scan.

If that didnt work. Have look HERE

Then try to run a ESET scan.

Can you also please post a new HijackThis log.

No dice. Tried both methods without success. I tried on Firefox, though, and it works fine. Not sure if I should go ahead and use Firefox for it? Again, I'm sorry to put you through this trouble for such a small thing.

Hello!

Lets change tactics.

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.

  • Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
  • Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
  • When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.
  • MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan. If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue. If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.
  • On the Scanner tab:
    • Make sure the Perform Full Scan option is selected.
    • Then click on the Scan button.
  • If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
  • The scan will begin and Scan in progress will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
  • When the scan is finished, a message box will say The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found.
  • Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
  • Back at the main Scanner screen, click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to restart your computer. (see Note below)
  • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

Lets update your Java and see if that helps.

Update Java Runtime and Run JavaRa

    Download Java Runtime
  • Go to HERE to download Java Runtime Environment Version 6 Update 12
  • Click on the link named Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 12
  • Click on the radio button to Accept License Agreement
  • Click on Windows Offline Installation Multi-language and save the downloaded file to your desktop

    Run JavaRa
  • Please download JavaRa and unzip it to your desktop.
  • Double-click on JavaRa.exe to start the program.
  • From the drop-down menu, choose English and click on Select.
  • JavaRa will open; click on Remove Older Versions to remove the older versions of Java installed on your computer.
  • Click Yes when prompted. When JavaRa is done, a notice will appear that a logfile has been produced. Click OK.
  • A logfile will pop up. Please save it to a convenient location.

    Install Java
  • Install the new version of Java by running the newly-downloaded file ( jre-6u12-windows-i586-p.exe) with the java icon which will be at your desktop, and follow the on-screen instructions.
  • Reboot your computer

After reboot go HERE to chechk that Java works. If Java works the try to run Kaspersky online scan using Firefox.

Logs/Information to Post in Next Reply

Please post the following logs/Information in your reply:
  • Malwarebytes Antimalware Log
  • Javara Log
  • A fresh HijackThis Log ( after all the above has been done)
  • Kaspersky Log (if was able to do the scan)
