Hello mandy and welcome to the forums.

Please do not run any other programs with out my permission !!
Run all programs in the order posted !!!!!

My name is flashh4 and I will be helping you to remove any infection(s) that you may have.

Please observe these rules while we work:

1. If you don't know, stop and ask! Don't keep going on.
2. Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
3. Please continue to respond until I give you the "All Clear"
(Just because you can't see a problem doesn't mean it isn't there)
4. Please note you'll need to have Administrator privileges to perform the fixes. (XP accounts are Administrator by default)
5. Please let me know if you are using a computer with multiple accounts, as this can affect the instructions given.
6. Please post all request .......... not as a Attachment.

If you can do those things, everything should go smoothly.

Please note that all instructions given are customised for this computer only, the tools used may cause damage if used on a computer with different infections.

If you think you have similar problems, please post a log in the HJT forum and wait for help.

Note: I am still in training at Malware Removal, however I will be working under the direct supervision of one of our Malware Experts. Any recommendations will first be approved before being given to you. Because of this, there may be a short delay in getting our responses to you, however be assured that we will be working diligently on your problem.

I will be back as soon as possible with a fix !!
In the mean time can you give me an Uninstall list please !!

  1. Open HijackThis.
  2. Click on the Open the Misc Tools section button.
  3. Look under System tools.
  4. Click on the Open Uninstall Manager... button.
  5. Click on the Save list... button.
  6. It will prompt you to save. Save this log in a convenient location. By default it's named uninstall_list.txt.
  7. Notepad will open. Please post this log in your next reply.

*Notes*
1. It would be very helpful if you informed me of which Antivirus and Firewall you are running or if it's disabled.
2. There is a 5 day limit which you must respond to this topic or it will be closed. Then you will have to start a new topic.

Thanks
Chuck

Hi Flash4,

Thanks for your quick response. I use Avast Home anti-virus but am thinking of switching to the Pro version after this problem. I also run Spybot and my Firewall is just the Windows Firewall which comes with the computer which is XP. Just lately when I boot up I get a message telling me that my firewall is not turned on and to 'click here to solve this problem', whenever the security centre opens the firewall is always turned on!

Hope this helps, the uninstall log is below.

Thanks,

Mandy.

Hi mandy, nothing bad showing in your log, just some clean up. Do you have a report of what was showing is bad ?? >>> C:\windows\system32\igfxhk.dll.

Ok, now lets do some searching.

  1. Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and save it to a convenient location.
  2. Double click on mbam-setup.exe to install it.
  3. Before clicking the Finish button, make sure that these 2 boxes are checked (ticked):
      Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
      Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  4. Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware will now check for updates. If your firewall prompts, please allow it. If you can't update it, select the Update tab. Under Update Mirror, select one of the websites and click on Check for Updates.
  5. Select the Scanner tab. Click on Perform full scan, then click on Scan.
  6. Leave the default options as it is and click on Start Scan.
  7. When done, you will be prompted. Click OK, then click on Show Results.
  8. Checked (ticked) all items and click on Remove Selected.
  9. After it has removed the items, Notepad will open. Please post this log in your next reply. You can also find the log in the Logs tab. The bottom most log is the latest.

NEXT

Please download and run the following !

RSIT

  • Download random's system information tool (RSIT) by random/random from here and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • Once it has finished, two logs will open. Please post the contents of both log.txt (<< will be maximized) and info.txt (<< will be minimized)

Please post the 2 rsit logs. No need to post a HJT log RSIT makes one.

Post next:
1.Malwarebytes' log.
2. 2 rsit logs.

Thanks
Chuck

Re: WINDOWS SYSTEM32 VIRUS

Unread postby mandy » February 4th, 2009, 7:42 am

Hi Flash 4

Sorry I think I posted one of the logs twice! The scan from malwarebytes found nothing. Why would some software show viruses and some not? I had this problem a couple of months ago when my Avast was showing 4 trojans and 2 worms that couldn't be removed but when I used other anti-viral software nothing showed up. I'm totally confused! My pc is running fine.

Thankyou again,

Mandy.

Hi Mandy, i still don't see anything bad showing. Lets run a scan.

* Please go to http://www.kaspersky.com/kos/eng/partne ... bscan.html and perform an online antivirus scan.
* Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
* It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
* When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
* Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
Archives
Mail databases

* Click on My Computer under Scan.
* Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
* You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
* Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
* Please post this log in your next reply.

Thanks
Chuck

Why would some software show viruses and some not?

Mandy some programs can cause what we call a "False Positive", thats a report that something is bad but not really, thats why we take nothing for granted, we research, research, research.Thats what we think may have happened.

a-squared Free has been know to give off a lot of them.

Hi Flash 4,

I tried a twice to download Kaspersky but it failed each time, it said I must be online. I was online so I'm a bit confused. Do you think I should uninstall A Squared? I rarely use it anyway. By the way my computer is really slow today! It is sticking while I type.

You say that some readings are false positives, do you know if Avast does that too? because I get viruses showing when I scan with it but then it can't remove them.

Thanks, Mandy :?:

Hi Mandy, lets try this online scan below.

Do you think I should uninstall A Squared? I rarely use it anyway

Yes, i would Uninstall/delete it. Then reboot and run an Avast scan and tell me what you get.
Avast, may be showing the FP's from A-Squared.
A lot of Antiviruses will sometimes pick up something and report it as bad (false positive) but its not. You just have to research everything to make sure its bad or good.

PANDA ONLINE SCAN

Please go >here< to run Panda's ActiveScan
  • Once you are on the Panda site, click the Scan your PC now button
  • A new window will open...click the Scan Now button
  • Allow the ActiveX control to be installed. It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan. Note: This may take a couple of minutes
  • Run the ActiveX control, if requested. The screen will then show the scanning progress - the scan will take a while to finish. Please be patient.
  • When the scan has finished, click on Export To
  • Save the file as Activescan.txt to your Desktop
  • Close the Activescan window then go to your Desktop
  • Double-click on Activescan.txt and it will open in Notepad
  • In Notepad, click Edit > Select all, then Edit > Copy
  • Reply to this thread and click Ctrl+V to paste the log in your reply

Hello Chuck.

I have taken off A Squared and ran a scan with Avast which showed 3 viruses as follows:
Also posted Panda log and Hijack Log. Just for info the datakiwee toolbar has apparently been infected since last year and couldn't be dealt with, it is not installed in fact I don't know why it is there!

Thanks again,

Mandy.

Re: WINDOWS SYSTEM32 VIRUS

Unread postby flashh4 » February 8th, 2009, 12:44 am

Hi Mandy, thanks for the logs and info.

First we need to disable TeaTimer. Disable Spybot's TeaTimer. This is a two step process.

Spybot S&D's tea timer normally provides real-time protection from spyware, however it may interfere with what we need to do. We will disable it until the machine is clean when it can be re-enabled.

First step:
  • Right-click the Spybot Icon in the System Tray (looks like a blue/white calendar with a padlock symbol)
  • If you have the new version 1.5, Click once on Resident Protection, then Right click the Spybot icon again and make sure Resident Protection is now Unchecked. The Spybot icon in the System tray should now be now colorless.
  • If you have Version 1.4, Click on Exit Spybot S&D Resident
Second step, For Either Version :
  • Open Spybot S&D
  • Click Mode, choose Advanced Mode
  • Go To the bottom of the Vertical Panel on the Left, Click Tools
  • then, also in left panel, click Resident shows a red/white shield.
  • If your firewall raises a question, say OK
  • In the Resident protection status frame, Uncheck the box labeled Resident "Tea-Timer"(Protection of over-all system settings) active
  • OK any prompts.
  • Use File, Exit to terminate Spybot
  • Reboot your machine for the changes to take effect.
Don't forget to re-enable it, when your computer is clean.

Re: WINDOWS SYSTEM32 VIRUS

Unread postby mandy » February 8th, 2009, 1:23 pm

Hello again Chuck,

I have done the Avast scan and have included the log from today (8th) + the log from the 6th as comparison. It found the 3 viruses again today plus an additional one. According to the scan the datakiwi toolbar is still infected! I thought I had got rid of it.

Thanks again.

Mandy.
