Computers Keyboard and Slow Computer

Unread postby myrlin2577 » January 27th, 2009, 9:22 pm

My computers keyboard has me typing and retyping the same letters over and over again before they work properly. The keyboard has new batteries and is only a year old. Every time I run a spyware scan and fix the problem it works again for a few days then back to the same old problem. It also has a tendency to be extremely slow at times. Please help me.

Welcome myrlin2577

Apologies for the late reply. As you can appreciate the boards are quite busy. If you still require help with your computer problem could you do the following:

Random's System Information Tool (RSIT)
  • Download Random's System Information Tool (RSIT) by random/random from here and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on RSIT.exe to run the tool
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen
  • Once it has finished, two logs will open, log.txt (<<will be maximized) and info.txt (<<will be minimized)
  • Copy & paste the contents of both logs in your next reply
If info.txt does not minimise to the Task Bar, you will find it in C:\rsit

If some programs listed are not present, please do not panic

Fix HiJackThis Entries
  • Open HiJackThis
  • Click on Do a system scan only
  • Place a checkmark next to these lines(if still present):
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {02478D38-C3F9-4efb-9B51-7695ECA05670} - (no file)
O2 - BHO: Browser Address Error Redirector - {CA6319C0-31B7-401E-A518-A07C3DB8F777} - C:\Program Files\BAE\BAE.dll
O15 - Trusted Zone: http://*.mcafee.com
<<<<------- See Note below on the Trusted Zone

  • Close all windows except Hijackthis and click Fix Checked
  • Click Yes when prompted
  • Close HijackThis.
You really should not have any website in the Trusted Zone of Internet Explorer. The reason being the default security settings in the Trusted Zone are set too low, which makes it unsafe. Plus it should not be necessary for any remote server to have that level of access. Plenty of good & reputable sites get hacked to host malware; advertising networks are renowned for serving malware which can appear on any site. The best policy is to remove anything from the Trusted Zone unless it's absolutely required in order for the site to work & you trust that site implicitly.

Update Java Runtime
You are using an old version of Java. Sun's Java is sometimes updated in order to eliminate the exploitation of vulnerabilities in an existing version. For this reason, it's extremely important that you keep the program
up to date, and also remove the older more vulnerable versions from your system. The most current version of Sun Java is: Java Runtime Environment Version 6 Update 11.
JavaRa
Download JavaRa and unzip it to your desktop.
***Please close any instances of Internet Explorer before continuing!***
  • Double-click on JavaRa.exe to start the program
  • From the drop-down menu, choose English and click on Select
  • JavaRa will open; click on Remove Older Versions to remove the older versions of Java installed on your computer
  • Click Yes when prompted. When JavaRa is done, a notice will appear that a logfile has been produced. Click OK
  • A logfile will pop up. Save it to a convenient location
  • Click on Additional Tasks then tick Remove Useless JRE Files
  • Click Go then OK when prompted & close the program.
Update Java Runtime
  • Go to http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp
  • Scroll down to Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 11 and click on the Download button
  • In the Platform box choose Windows
  • Check the box to Accept License Agreement and click Continue
  • Click on Windows Offline Installation, click on the link under it which says "jre-6u11-windows-i586-p.exe" and save the downloaded file to your desktop
  • Install the new version by running the downloaded file with the Java icon & follow the on-screen instructions
  • Reboot your computer
ATF Cleaner
Download ATF Cleaner here by Atribune.
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program
    Under Main choose: Select All
    Click the Empty Selected button
If you use Firefox browser
Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
    Click the Empty Selected button
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt
If you use Opera browser
Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
    Click the Empty Selected button
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Gmer
Download gmer.zip from Gmer here & save it to your desktop.
  • Right click on gmer.zip and select Extract All...
  • Click Next on seeing the Welcome to the Compressed (zipped) Folders Extraction Wizard
  • Click on the Browse button. Click on Desktop. Then click OK
  • Click Next. It will start extracting
  • Once done, check (tick) the Show extracted files box and click Finish
  • Disable ALL Anti-virus & Anti-spyware programs prior to running Gmer
  • Double click on gmer.exe to run it
  • Select the Rootkit tab
  • On the right hand side, check all the items to be scanned, but leave Show All box unchecked
  • Select all drives that are connected to your system to be scanned
  • Click on the Scan button
  • When the scan is finished, click Copy to save the scan log to the Windows clipboard
  • Open Notepad or a similar text editor
  • Paste the clipboard contents into the text editor
  • Save the Gmer scan log and post it in your next reply
  • Close Gmer
Note: Do not run any programs while Gmer is running.

Kaspersky Online Scan
Do an online scan with >Kaspersky Online Scanner<
  • Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button
  • It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run
  • When the downloads have finished, click on Settings
  • Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
      Archives
      Mail databases

Re: Computers Keyboard and Slow Computer

Hi

Your logs are clean so I don't believe the keyboard issue is malware related. What sort of keyboard is it? Wireless? Brand? You say it comes good for a while after a scan with your security suite. Has your security suite ever picked up anything?

I have a wireless Microsoft Keyboard and Mouse. The batteries are new in the mouse and keyboard and the wireless station is only three feet away. It seems as if the keyboard is working fine ever since you started giving me instructions. I have been using Identity Patrol V2.0 and ZoneAlarm Security Suite together. Is it possible that could have caused the problem?

Everytime I scan the computer with my ZoneAlarm Virus and Spyware scan it comes up with at least a dozen spyware problems. I will post them below for your review.

The Identity Patrol Always has about a dozen problems as well. One of them is ISPYKILLER 5.0 that always shows up. I don't even see that in my computer under programs.

What can I do to get rid of those Cookies forever ????

Possibly, especially if you have both set for realtime scanning. May have been causing a conflict somewhere. Maybe set Identity Patrol as "on demand", in other words disable the realtime protection & use it to scan every week or so.

What can I do to get rid of those Cookies forever ????
Have a look here: http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/cookies.htm This should help you out to stop those cookies. Just bare in mind you will need to allow some cookies.

Let's do a scan with Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware just to make sure:
Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware here and save to your desktop.
  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to:
    Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please copy and paste the log back into your next reply
    Note:
  • The log can also be found here:
    C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\mbam-log-date (time).txt
  • Or via the Logs tab when Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware is started.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts.
Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process.
If asked to restart the computer, please do so. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.
If you receive an (Error Loading) error on reboot please reboot a second time . It is normal for this error to occur once and does not need to be reported unless it returns on future reboots.

To post in next reply:

New HijackThis log
Let me know how the computer is running / problems

The keyboard is fine, but the computer is still running slow. The RAM seems to be maxed out all the time, but my scan came out clean.

Update Adobe Reader
Recently there have been vunerabilities detected in older versions of Adobe Reader. It is strongly suggested that you update to the current version: Adobe Reader 9
You can download it from http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html
If you already have Adobe Photoshop® Album Starter Edition installed or do not wish to have it installed Uncheck the box which says Also Download Adobe Photoshop® Album Starter Edition.

Adobe 9 is a large program and if you prefer a smaller program you can get Foxit 3 instead from http://www.foxitsoftware.com/pdf/rd_intro.php

From first RSIT log: Total RAM: 510 MB (6% free). Adding more RAM may help.
You have quite few programs running at StartUp The following can be fixed with HijackThis & possibly speed things up a bit. They are either not required or User choice. Doing this will only stop the listed items from running at start up. It will not delete/remove anything. If there is anything in the list you want running at start up just skip that item:

Fix HiJackThis Entries
  • Open HiJackThis
  • Click on Do a system scan only
  • Place a checkmark next to these lines(if still present):
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SoundMAXPnP] C:\Program Files\Analog Devices\Core\smax4pnp.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [IgfxTray] C:\WINDOWS\system32\igfxtray.exe

  • Close all windows except Hijackthis and click Fix Checked
  • Click Yes when prompted
  • Close HijackThis.
Reboot your computer.

You can also look Here for some tips on how to speed up your computer.

Clean Up
Now we need to clear out the programs we've been using to clean up your computer, they are not suitable for general malware removal and could cause damage if used inappropriately.
OTCleanIt
Download OTCleanIt here & save it to your desktop.
Double click on OTCleanIt.exe. Click on CleanUp!.
You will receive a prompt that it needs to restart the computer to remove the files. Click Yes.
It will restart your computer automatically. If it doesn't, please restart your computer manually.
You can also delete the following from your desktop: RSIT.exe, JavaRa. Delete the following folder: C:\rsit
You can either delete or keep ATF-Cleaner. It's a handy tool for cleaning out your temporary folders.

Let me know how you go.

Thank you sooo much... The computer is running much faster now. I also no longer have any problems with the keyboard. I guess it was a bit of a learning game. Now that you have helped me to learn how to keep my computer lean and mean I should have no problems.

Thank you for all of your help.

Good to hear :thumbright:

All Clean
Congratulations, good work, your system is now clean. Now that your system is safe we would like you to keep it that way.
Take the time to follow these instructions and it will greatly reduce the risk of further infections and greatly diminish the chances of you having to visit here again.

Create a Clean System Restore Point
Create a new, clean System Restore point which you can use in case of future system problems:
Press Start->All Programs->Accessories->System Tools->System Restore
Select Create a restore point, then Next, type a name like All Clean then press the Create button and once it's done press Close
Now remove old, infected System Restore points:
Next click Start->Run and type cleanmgr in the box and click OK
Ensure the boxes for Temporary Files & Temporary Internet Files are checked. You can choose to check other boxes if you wish but they are not required.
Select the More Options tab, under System Restore click Clean up... and click Yes to the prompt

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware is a new and powerful anti-malware tool. It is totally free but for real-time protection you will have to pay a small one-time fee.
You can find a tutorial here.

SpywareBlaster
Download and install Javacools SpywareBlaster from here
SpywareBlaster adds a list of ActiveX controls, tracking cookies and sites which will be blocked in either Internet Explorer or Firefox browsers. You need to manually check for updates regularly.

Download and Install a HOSTS File
A HOSTS file is a big list of bad web sites. The list has a specific format, a specific name, (name is just HOSTS with no file extension), and a specific location. Your machine always looks at that file in that location before connecting to a web site to verify the address. So the HOSTS listing can be used to "short circuit" a request to a bad website by giving it the address of your own machine.

Download BlueTack's HOSTS Manager here, using Internet Explorer (Firefox won't work):
  • A short distance down the page in the centre, click on the Download button
  • Agree to the license
  • On the next page, to the right side of where it says Download Estimates, right click on the underlined word Hosts Manager choose Save Target As and download the installer Hosts20setup.exe to your desktop
  • Double click the Installer on your desktop and let it Install the Hosts Manager
  • After the installation is complete, click on the Hosts Manager icon on your desktop. (You can delete the other Hosts Switch icon from your desktop)
  • When the Hosts Manager comes up, click the small down arrows on the right side of the bar labeled Options and Tools,
  • Click Disable DNS Service. This is important
  • In the Left Pane, click Download
  • It will load 80,000 lines or more. When it finishes, also in the left pane, click Replace, and then click Save
You can use this manager to handle your HOSTS file download, edits, and most any other HOSTS issue.
If you have a separate party firewall or Winpatrol, you may have to give permissions at various times to Unlock the present default HOSTS file and install the new one.

Install WinPatrol
Download it here
You can find information about how WinPatrol works here
