Browsers crashing, pop-up win32.zafi.B, found win32/crypto

Unread postby ted_bell » January 19th, 2009, 12:22 pm

Hello,

It appears we received some malware from an email postcard from Russia.

Same as the other topics. Browsers crashing, pop-up window with "security center" warning of win32.zafi.B trojan. Kasperski found win32/Crypto, win32.TDSS, not-a-virus:Adware.win32.webhancer, win32.Patched, win32.marketscore, win32.whenU, win32.newdotnet, HEUR: trojan-dropper.script.generic.

Ran some other virus scans also. They didn't find anything to repair.

Hello and welcome to the forums.

Please do not run any other programs with out my permission !!
Run all programs in the order posted !!!!!

My name is flashh4 and I will be helping you to remove any infection(s) that you may have.

Please observe these rules while we work:

1. If you don't know, stop and ask! Don't keep going on.
2. Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
3. Please continue to respond until I give you the "All Clear"
(Just because you can't see a problem doesn't mean it isn't there)
4. Please note you'll need to have Administrator privileges to perform the fixes. (XP accounts are Administrator by default)
5. Please let me know if you are using a computer with multiple accounts, as this can affect the instructions given.
6. Please post all request .......... not as a Attachment.

If you can do those things, everything should go smoothly.

Please note that all instructions given are customised for this computer only, the tools used may cause damage if used on a computer with different infections.

If you think you have similar problems, please post a log in the HJT forum and wait for help.

Note: I am still in training at Malware Removal, however I will be working under the direct supervision of one of our Malware Experts. Any recommendations will first be approved before being given to you. Because of this, there may be a short delay in getting our responses to you, however be assured that we will be working diligently on your problem.

*Notes*
1. It would be very helpful if you informed me of which Antivirus and Firewall you are running or if it's disabled.
2. There is a 5 day limit which you must respond to this topic or it will be closed. Then you will have to start a new topic.

[color=#004000]I will be back as soon as possible with a fix !!

Thanks

Re: Browsers crashing, pop-up win32.zafi.B, found win32/crypto

Unread postby ted_bell » January 19th, 2009, 9:51 pm

Hi Chuck,

We were using AVG when we got the virus. Also using ZoneAlarm. I've since uninstalled them and installed Kaspersky as the permanent scanner. Because of the persistence of the virus I have also run the Avast quick scanner, and installed the Avast anti virus for removal purposes. Avast was uninstalled post-scan.

Today Avast found:
Win32/Fasec
Win32:Tidserv
BV:Silly-82

Anyway, at this point I'm running Kaspersky again. No ZoneAlarm.

Thanks in advance for the help.

Ted

forgot to add, that after the Avast scan my browser hasn't crashed. yet....
still get the pop-up though and warning when navigating from start page.

Hi ted_bell, lets do some looking around.

  1. Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and save it to a convenient location.
  2. Double click on mbam-setup.exe to install it.
  3. Before clicking the Finish button, make sure that these 2 boxes are checked (ticked):
      Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
      Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  4. Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware will now check for updates. If your firewall prompts, please allow it. If you can't update it, select the Update tab. Under Update Mirror, select one of the websites and click on Check for Updates.
  5. Select the Scanner tab. Click on Perform full scan, then click on Scan.
  6. Leave the default options as it is and click on Start Scan.
  7. When done, you will be prompted. Click OK, then click on Show Results.
  8. Checked (ticked) all items and click on Remove Selected.
  9. After it has removed the items, Notepad will open. Please post this log in your next reply. You can also find the log in the Logs tab. The bottom most log is the latest.

Please post next:
1. Malwarebytes' log/report
2. New HJT log

Thanks
Chuck

Re: Browsers crashing, pop-up win32.zafi.B, found win32/crypto

Unread postby flashh4 » January 24th, 2009, 11:40 am

Hi ted_bell, sorry for the wait but the boards are very busy.
Ok, lets continue.

Download and Run Gmer
Download Gmer to your Desktop and unzip it to your Desktop.
http://www.gmer.net/gmer.zip

* Unzip it to a folder on your desktop
* Double click on gmer.exe to launch GMER
* If asked, allow the gmer.sys driver load
* If it warns you about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run scan, click OK
* If you don't get a warning then
Click the rootkit tab
Click Scan
* Once the scan has finished, click copy
* Paste the log into notepad using Ctrl+V
* Save it to your desktop as gmerrk.txt
* Click on the >>> tab
* This will open up the rest of the tabs for you
* Click on the Autostart tab
* Click on Scan
* Once the scan has finished, click copy
* Paste the log into notepad using Ctrl+V
* Save it to your desktop as gmerautos.txt
* Copy and paste the contents of gmerautos.txt and gmerrk.txt as a reply to this topic

Thanks
Chuck

Re: Browsers crashing, pop-up win32.zafi.B, found win32/crypto

Unread postby flashh4 » January 25th, 2009, 3:58 pm

Hi ted_bell, you have a bad rootkit infection which has infected your drivers.
You may want to print out these instructions or save them to your desktop as a text file with Notepad because we will be restarting into Safe Mode you might not be able to access the Internet.

Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.

Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :

  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
  • Choose your usual account.
  • Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
  • Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
  • It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
  • Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
  • When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
  • Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
(Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).
  • Finally paste the contents of the Report.txt back on the forum with a new HijackThis log

Also do another GMER scan after you have run the SDFix and post it also.

Please post these:
1. SDFix log
2. GMER scan/log
3. New HJT log

Thanks
Chuck

Here you go. Thanks for the help. I'll send you some Jackalope steaks sometime.

Hi ted_bell, you missed this one.

:Remove bad HijackThis entries:
  • Run HijackThis
  • Click on the Scan button
  • Put a check beside all of the items listed below (if present):

      R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = about:blank
      R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - {4D25F926-B9FE-4682-BF72-8AB8210D6D75} - C:\Program Files\MyWaySA\SrchAsDe\1.bin\deSrcAs.dll (file missing)

  • Close all open windows and browsers/email, etc...
  • Click on the "Fix Checked" button
  • When completed, close the application.

It looks like you did not run the JavaRa program that i posted in my last fix.
Please do so then post a new HJT log.

Thanks
Chuck

Hi ted_bell, Since you already have Malwarebytes' installed i would keep this valuable tool. I run mine a few times a week to check my computer for anything it may have picked up.
You can continue to manually update and use MBAM as an on demand scanner.
There is also an upgrade to the paid version.
Instructions on use:
Click/open Malwarebytes' on your desk top, click the Update tab, click the box check for updates, use the option "perform quick scan".
# When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
# Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected

I can't see any firewall in your HijackThis log, so i assume you use windows firewall.

FIREWALL
Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. If you use the Windows Firewall you might think that's sufficient but it only controls one way of the traffic (inbound). Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.
It's preferable to install one of the suggested firewalls.
Vista users, must check compatibility with Vista before installation.

FREE FIREWALLS
  • Comodo (Uncheck during installation "Install COMODO Antivirus (Recommended)", "Install Comodo SafeSurf", "Make Comodo my default search provider" and "Make Comodo Search my homepage")
  • Outpost
  • Sunbelt Kerio

Tutorial about Firewalls can be found here

Congratulation you are clean !!!

This is a good time to clear your existing system restore points and establish a new clean restore point:

* Go to Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore
* Select Create a restore point then Next, type a name like All Clean, press the Create button. Once it's finished, press Close.
* Next, go to Start > Run and type in cleanmgr and press OK.
* Select the More options tab.
* Choose the option to clean up system restore and OK it.

This will remove all restore points except the new one you just created.

Next we remove all used tools.
You can remove SDFix and SDFix.exe
Also you can remove Gmer

  • Disable and Enable System Restore. - If you are using Windows XP or Vista then you should disable and re-enable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point.

You can find instructions on how to enable and re-enable system restore here:

    Windows XP System Restore Guide

Re-enable system restore with instructions from tutorial above

    • Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
    • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
    • Click once on the Security tab
    • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
    • Click once on the Custom Level button.
    • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
    • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable

    • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
    • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
    • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

    • Update your AntiVirus Software and keep your other programs up-to-date
Update your Antivirus programs and other security products regularly to avoid new threats that could infect your system.
You can use one of these sites to check if any updates are needed for your pc.
      Secunia Software Inspector
      F-secure Health Check

    • Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://update.microsoft.com/windowsupda ... ankspage=5 regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

    • Install Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware - Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware is a new and powerful anti-malware tool. It is
totally free but for real-time protection you will have to pay a small one-time fee. Tutorial on installing & using this product can be found below:

      Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Setup Guide

      Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Scanning Guide

    • Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
