The only anti-virus software I ran was AVG ( free ).

The reason I re-named malwarebytes was because it is the only way I could get the program to install. ie re-named and installed however it would not run after installation.

I have just tried to load the program again without re-naming and it wont allow me to load the program.

Have you removed your anti virus program ( avg8 )? as your running with no protection.
I don't see a firewall also. I will be back with you later. :)

Download Lop S&D by Eric_71 and save it to your desktop.
Lop S&D will only run on Windows XP and Windows Vista

Disable your antivirus if you have reinstalled it! and antimalware programs so they do not interfere with the running of Lop S&D.
To see how to disable security programs visit this tutorial:
How To Temporarily Disable Your Anti-virus, Firewall And Anti-malware Programs
You will need to disable following programs:
Spybot - Search & Destroy
  • Double-click Lop S&D.exe
  • Choose the language by typing of the corresponding letter and press Enter
  • Click OK at the informative window
  • Type 1, to choose Option 1 (Search) then press Enter
  • Wait until the end of the scan
  • A report will be generated, post the contents of it in your next reply.
(Copy of the report can be found at this location: %systemdrive%\lopR.txt, in most cases C:\lopR.txt)

LimeWire
FrostWire

Can I draw your attention to this post viewtopic.php?p=396174#p396174
where you told me you had removed the p2p programs but as you can see they are clearly still on your system.
If you don't abide by forum policy

dan12 wrote:Remove P2P programs - MalWare Removal has a policy on P2P programs installed:

Use of P2P (Person to Person) file sharing programs

We have noticed that most people seeking help from us are coming with infections contracted from the use of P2P programs.

Because of this, we felt we needed to change our policy on the use of P2P file sharing programs.
  • If your helper detects the presence of such programs on your computer he/she will ask you to remove them. We will withdraw our help should you not agree to their removal.

  • If we clean your computer of infection, and you return to us a short time later with an infection contracted by the use of P2P programmes, we will refuse our help.

We do not ask you to do this without reason.

P2P programs form a direct conduit onto your computer, their security measures are easily circumvented, and Malware writers are increasingly exploiting them to spread their wares onto your computer. Further to that, if your P2P programme is not configured correctly you may be sharing more files than you realise. There have been cases where people's Passwords, Address Books and other personal, private, and financial details have been exposed to the file sharing network by a badly configured programme.

This article from InfoWorld illustrates perfectly the dangers of a poorly configured P2P program.
http://www.infoworld.com/article/07/09/06/Seattle-man-arrested-for-p-to-p-ID-theft_1.html

Many of the programs come bundled with other unwanted programs, but even the ones free of any bundled software are not safe to use.

When you use them you are downloading software from an unknown source directly onto your computer, bypassing your Firewall and Anti-Virus software. Hardly surprising then that many of these Downloads are being targeted to carry infections.

We see no purpose in cleaning your machine if you use P2P programs, as it is pretty much certain that if you continue to use them then you will get infected again.

You have the following P2P program(s) installed:
LimeWire, FrostWire,

This is how you uninstall it/them:

  • Click Start
  • Go to Control Panel
  • Go to Add/Remove Programs
  • Find and click Remove for the following (if present):

    LimeWire, FrostWire,

Note: Take care when answering any questions posed by an uninstaller. Some questions may be worded to deceive you into keeping the program.

I will have to consider withdrawing my help.

I will check in on you later with your next steps once you have read this post

Excuse me but I removed both as per your previous request. I have just checked again and there is no sign of either of these programs.

If evidence of them is still there via logs I have posted then I can not control that but I can assure you these were removed.

I removed them via the Add/Remove on the control panel.

Thank you

The folder entries for the p2p I picked up from your last scan, this was a couple of days after you removed them.

Ok, let's continue, if you have problems running the tool do as you did with malwarebytes rename combofix to run.

Download and run Combofix
This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.
ComboFix SHOULD NOT be used unless requested by a forum helper

Please download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2
Link 3

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Image
Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Image
Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.
When finished, it will produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log.

If you need help, see this link:

Post back:

Hi, while I go through your log there are a couple of files I would like checking out.
Can you also tell me what your different drives are? are they external hard drives/usb sticks?

Combofix must be run from the desktop for it to work!
yours is running from this drive: F:\amber.exe.exe

Submit a File For Analysis
We need to have the files below Scanned by Uploading them/it to Jotti

Please visit Jotti
Copy/paste the the following file path into the window

F:\cibo.exe.exe

Click Submit/Send File
Please post back, to let me know the results.

Please do the same for the following file
F:\Bard.exe
F:\sidstick.exe
F:\setupSNK.exe

If Jotti is too busy please try Virustotal

will get back to you when I've gone through your scan.

End of file - 8570 bytes

The "F" drive was the USB where I downloaded combofix, HJT etc on.

I am unable to find the files to submit to "jotti" ie

F:\Bard.exe
F:\sidstick.exe
F:\setupSNK.exe

I have noticed today that there has been some improvement in the PC ie I am now able to access this site and also Malwarebytes which I was unable to do before.

Thanks Dan

I now have had some luck in getting malwarebytes to install and run on this PC..would you like me to do a full scan and post up the results?

Yes please.

You are still not running combofix from the desktop,it has to run from the desktop for it to work.

If we need to run it again! just put the "exe" on the desktop, in your case I think you renamed it "magpie.exe"
it's in brad folder!

I will await the malwarebyte scan first. I will be back online later. :)
