Google searches lead to shopping sites

As I visited a normal web page, a popup indicated that AVG detected malware and suggested "scan now", which I did. The scan led me to a purchase site for AVG 8.0, which I declined. I believe the popup was a trojan. IE began misbehaving and Google searches led to shopping sites unrelated to search results. I restored the PC (XP Media Center, SP3) to an earlier date and all except internet search seems OK. Google and Yahoo both return similar search results. Switching to Firefox made no difference.

I note that there's another active post on the same topic, but there's currently no resolution for that poster's similar issue with search results.

Yes, I'm still having the problem. I've run malaware, kaspersky, and AVG to no avail. I can turn off javascript and get good search response but that leads to other problems.
