Yellow.com browser hijack

Unread postby infected1 » January 14th, 2009, 2:11 pm

My PC is infected with a browser hijack that regular freezes the computer for a few seconds, then changes the 1st or 2nd browser tab usually to "yellow.com" (about 50% of the time), or other similar search websites such as "go connect". It sometimes also picks up keywords from Google searches and then opens a new browser window to a directory of businesses affiliated with the keyword. Other times it just does it on its own by hijacking an already open browser window after a certain period of time has passed (maybe 20 minutes or so). AdAware did not remove the hijack.

I installed Hijack This, and here is the scan result.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

_________________________________
Welcome to the Forums.

The fixes we will use are specific to your problems and should only be used for this issue on this machine.

Please only use this topic to reply to. Do not start another thread.
If any other issues arise let me know.
The process is not instant.
Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine is clear.
Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
So lets do this to the end!

  • Save and quit any work your doing before beginning the fix.
  • All hijackthis logs I ask for should be done in normal mode ( not safe mode)
  • These logs should be done last after you have followed my instructions in the previous post.
  • DO NOT be installing new programs while you run Hijackthis.
  • If I do not hear from you in 5 days from my last post this topic will be closed.

Please if you decide to seek help at another forum let us know. There is a shortage of helpers and tying 2 of us up is a waste of time.
If you have any questions about any advice given here please STOP and ask!

Sorry for the delay .
If you still need help please post a new HJT log.

I haven't done anything, I've just been waiting for a reply ... I can post another HijackThis log, but it will probably be exactly the same as above ...

Submit a file to Jotti
Please go here : http://virusscan.jotti.org/
On top of the page there is a field to add the filepath, copy and paste this filepath in there.
If theres is more than one file to scan, insert them 1 at a time.

C:\WINNT\TEMP\XFF01B.EXE

Then hit Submit
The scan will take a while before the result comes up so please be patient.
Then copy the result and post it here in this thread.

You may recieve a message stating "
"The file you uploaded is 0 bytes. It is very likely a firewall or a piece of malware is prohibiting you from uploading this file"

Just let me know if that is what you saw.

If Jotti's service load is too high, you can use the following scanner instead:
http://www.virustotal.com/xhtml/index_en.html

Please visit this web page for download links, and instructions for running ComboFix tool:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

Please ensure you read this guide carefully and install the Recovery Console first.

The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode. This allows us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware. It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

Once installed, you should see a blue screen prompt that says:

The Recovery Console was successfully installed.

Please continue as follows:

  1. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix, link
    Remember to re-enable them afterwards.

  2. Click Yes to allow ComboFix to continue scanning for malware.

When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.

Please include the following reports for further review, and so we may continue cleansing the system:

C:\ComboFix.txt
New HijackThis log.

and
The report from Jottis/virus total

After running ComboFix, the Internet connection on this computer is uncharacteristically zippy ... I didn't know this computer could run so fast.

I've also been opening tabs and clicking on things that typically activate the browser hijack, but nothing ... so ComboFix may have taken care of the problem. I will report back on this within 48 hours after a couple of days of work on this machine.

If there still are problems, then I'll post the ComboFix log and a new HijackThis log at that time. But hopefully the problem is finally solved. THANK YOU FOR NOW!

That's not really the way it works infected1. Just because symptoms are gone doesn't mean we got everything cleaned. As I asked in the beginning that we do this to the end. Coming back to me in 2 or 3 days time with the machine still infected isn't the smartest thing to do.
Please post a new HJT log and the report from combofix and let's make sure this is gone for good.
